From what i saw last years, i think elite world champion in boxing must be able to take a punch. Defense is also more important that before. It is my opinion, but am i wrong ?

Some of the credit can go to good "strength and conditioning" coaches and their supplements

You're suggesting that Defense and ability to take a punch wasn't an important part of being an Elite World Champion before now?

Ability to take a punch was always important. But defense seems improved a lot since 70s IMO

Something must've made you post that. It's ok, I'm just curious.

Fair enough. Go watch guys like Carlos Monzon; Jimmy Young; Jose Napoles; Bob Foster (at LHW), etc. If you're watching highlights, you'll see the best punches landed for certain, so try to watch full fights. I don't see any better defense in general today.

One thing which may have you thinking that way is the highly reduced punch rate over the last 35 years.

I think I understand what you are saying. I feel during the Mayweather era and post the Mayweather era ( noting that there’s only three eras in boxing. Pre-mayweather, mayweather and post mayweather) judges seem to consider defence more than ever. That’s how I feel but I’ve got nothing really to back that up other than golovkin Canelo 1 which is a notorious robbery.

Punching power has gotten worse since the time of Gerald McClellan, Julian Jackson, Tommy Hearns, etc. There aren't many fighters now who hit like a truck like them, besides Randall Bailey.
Stamina has gotten worse since the time of Pryor - Arguello. Fighters of the 80's could fight at absolute top gear all fight long. Current fighters pretty much fight in second gear.
Big men like the Klitschkos have gotten better at exploiting their height and reach than in the past.
Defensive fighters like Mayweather and Whitaker have gotten better than those of past eras.
Modern fighters use the clinch a lot compared to past fighters. I feel like Ali contributed to the clinch being a major tactical tool of self-preservation for defensive fighters.
Punch resistance has necessarily gotten worse over time. This is because punch resistance is a largely genetic thing, it isn't well aided by innovations over time, and the deeper the talent pool, the more durable the top level boxers are going to be (size of talent pool has declined relative to the mid 20th century).
Perception of punch resistance will also necessarily decline over time. This is because innovations in better boxing technique lead to more effective punching, which will make fighters look like they are getting worse at taking punches. In old school boxing, you had guys like Marciano and Dempsey who looked like they were made of steel, but their opponents had laughably bad punching form compared to modern fighters, so those punches had less force.
