According to Detroit News, 28-year-old Artis Mack is now facing a felony charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, and is accused by local authorities in Michigan of punching veteran trainer James Ali Bashir, 68-years-old.

On October 4th, the official weigh-in was scheduled to take place for the world title fight between Claressa Shields and Ivana Habazin in Flint, Michigan.

Before both women were able to step on the scale, a verbal altercation took place between Shields' sister and Bashir, who trains Habazin.

Bashir was later sucker-punched and knocked unconscious, allegedly by Mack.

The fight was canceled when Habazin withdrew, as she went with Bashir to a local Detroit hospital. The trainer underwent surgery for facial injuries. Their title fight is expected to be rescheduled on Showtime, at a later date.

According to Prosecutor David Leyton, Flint police say Mack was spotted fleeing the scene on foot by an officer, who noticed he matched the suspect's description.

"The officer followed Mack into a nearby neighborhood and an arrest was made," Leyton's statement said.

Some outlets have listed Mack as the brother of Shields, but neither local police or the prosecutor's office have officially claimed him as such.

Shields took to social media in the aftermath and called the attack "inexcusable."

“I do not stand for that and do not in any way justify what happened no matter what he said! I stand with Coach Ali and Ivana Habazin and I also understand their stand on our fight," Shields stated.

Claressa Shields' Brother Sentenced To 1 Year in Jail in Bashir Assault Case

Back in early February, 28-year-old Artis Mack, who is the brother of unified world champion Claressa Shields, reached a plea deal in connection with the assault on veteran trainer James Ali Bashir.

Mack appeared in Genesee District Court and pleaded guilty to a single count of aggravated assault, which is a misdemeanor charge punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine, or both.

Mack is accused of punching Bashir on October 4 at the Dort Federal Event Center - during the official weigh-in for the scheduled Showtime televised headliner between Shields and Ivana Habazin.

A few days ago, Mack appeared back in court and was sentenced to the maximum time period of one year in jail.

However, the judge gave Mack 158 days credit for time served.

Witnesses claimed that Mack had sucker-puncher Bashir, who a moment earlier had been involved in a verbal altercation with Shields' sister. Bashir was knocked out and taken to a local hospital to get treated for injuries.

Due to her head trainer being hospitalized, Habazin refused to go forward with the fight and it was canceled. Showtime's card still went ahead, with modified card for television.

The contest was rescheduled for January 10 in Atlantic City, with Shields easily dominating Habazin for a unanimous decision to unify the WBO, WBC junior middleweight titles - and became a three division champion in only ten pro fights.

Frank Manley, Mack’s attorney, spoke to Mlive and stated - “It was bad for the city, bad for his sister and certainly bad for everybody involved. Hopefully this will put an end to it.”
