Devin Haney vs. Petr Petrov - November 9, 2019?

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn says WBC interim lightweight champion Devin Haney will probably be facing 36-year-old Petr Petrov next month on November 9 on the undercard of KSI vs. Logan Paul on DAZN at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Petrov = showcase fight for Haney

That’s not a great fight, but this is obviously a fight that is more of a showcase match to allow Haney to look spectacular against a capable guy. The fight is a horrible mismatch, but it’s unlikely that Hearn could find a good opponent to step in with Haney on 4 weeks’ notice.

Petrov (41-6-2, 22 KOs) has twice challenged for world titles, and come up short both times in defeats against Marcos Maidana and Terry Flanagan. Maidana destroyed Petrov in a 4th round knockout in September 2011. Former WBO lightweight champion Flanagan beat Petrov by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision in April 2017.

Petrov has 3-fight winning streak

Last year, former IBF light welterweight champion Ivan Baranchyk stopped Petrov in the 8th round in March 2018. Since that fight, Petrov has won his last three fights against Hermin Isava, Ruben Tamayo and Dedrick Bell.

Not bad for a late replacement and nice that he is returning to action just 8 weeks after his last bout. Unfortunately, Haney is one of the few world-class fighters who will have had 4 bouts this year.

Wouldn’t call him world class just yet..

Wouldn't want to throw words aroudn yet... I have no doubt he's top class.. Let him win a WORLD title at least before calling him WORLD class..

I don't care about belts. Is beterbiev world class? If not, I respect that you expect anyone to prove it first.

Simply a matter of semantics.

You call him top class, I call him world class.

The point is that Haney is one of the best lightweights in the entire world right now. He is also one of the busiest fighters at any weight on the global level. The only fighters in the BoxRec worldwide top 50 who are having even 3 fights in 2019 are Kovalev, Munguia & Emanuel Navarrete. Haney is having 4 this year!!

Haney has world class ability, but he's clearly still a bit in the matchmaking stage before championship level.Doubt we see 4 fights a year once he starts fighting for world titles.

Haney is world class in my opinion at least. After all, it's just opinions that put them there anyway, right?

I hope he gets to fight Loma or Tank before he has to move up to 140. Being so busy as a fighter at least enables him to still make the weight. I think next year by this time we may see him make the move if the big fights don't come his way. My guess is guys like Loma and Tank will wait it out. T. Lopez would be good too, along with Ryan Garcia. I think Haney can hang with and possibly beat any of them.

Haney is world class fighter. A title don't make you world class. Let me ask this if a guy was "world class" for ten years what's the criteria for no longer being world class? What's the criteria for being world class.

Some folks believe a fighter needs a world title to be considered world-class but many fight fans believe that world-class, top-notch, top-tier and top-class are all synonyms > they mean the same thing.

You make a great point about world titles. In the current era there are 4 major world title belts and 17 weight divisions. NOBODY actually believes all 68 of those "world champs" are world-class.

Did limited brawler Jeff Horn become "world-class" when he "defeated" Pacquiao?
Did Jamel Herring become world-class when he beat one-dimensional "world champ" Masayuki Ito?
Did 2nd-tier Rocky Fielding become world-class when he beat 2nd-tier "champ "Tyron Zeuge?

ANSWER TO ALL 3: Resounding NO

There was a common saying uttered by many TV fight commentators & fighters themselves back in the 1990s that DEFINITELY applies here: "The title belt does NOT make the fighter, The fighter makes the title belt!! :OhYes:

Having a belt seems to matter for a fighters schedule though, and wasnt Haney's busy schedule the point...

I bet you if he picks up a belt his activity drops ...

That always happens. He’s start fighting no more than 2-3 times a year..
Even Munguia has calmed down.

The supposed defence against Alfredo Santiago isn't listed on Boxrec, any idea if its been scrapped?

It's on, boxrec schedule isn't reliable.

I much prefer Santiago, another young guy who has a decent prospect record, though with not much activity. We know Petrov would just be peppered and exactly how that would go, this is more interesting and this guy is nearly 6 feet

He’s beaten the veteran Victor Baros. Suppose that’s ok

I think the bar will keep moving for Haney to get the respect he deserves, until he fights someone like Tank, Commey, Loma, Mikey Garcia, or T. Lopez. I do like the fact he is keeping busy. I think he needs to be in order to keep his weight manageable.

I think most people rate him very highly, and tbf he hasn't exactly faced standout opposition so far to really merit loads of respect for his accomplishments. His respect will not be a problem I think because he will keep winning as he steps up

Haney vs. Lopez would be good.

Since Lopez’s UD win over the tall Jap, no one even mentions him anymore. Before it was always Loma vs. Lopez.. now it’s all Loma vs. Haney.
