Why did French CW Taoufik Belbouli retire in 1990?

A French CW, he isn't a well known name but had his last fight in 1990 and ended with a 29-1- 1 (23KO) record. He won the WBA CW title against Robert Greer and forfeited the title but then fought for it again and that ended in a draw with Robert Daniels. He never fought again. He finished on a 17 fight (16KO) unbeaten stretch. Anyone know why he stopped fighting? He was 36, not sure if that's to do with it.

Edit: Think I found the reason, injury to his knee was why he gave up the title, I assume that was to do with it.

I remember him in the ratings in ring magazine way back then but never got around to seeing him fight. Often wondered why he retired early as well, though an injury would make sense as you say. After Evander left Cruiser, the division was pretty void of talent for several years and lacking in good paying fights I imagine.
