Brendan Ingle's Boxing career.

by KOJOE90
We all know about the Dublin born Mr Boxing of Sheffield Brendan Ingle who has trained many Boxing Champions such as Naseem Hamed, Johnny Nelson, Herol Graham and Junior Witter amongst others.

But what I had not realised untill about 6 years ago was that Brendan Ingle has a lengthy Boxing career himself, as an Amatuer then a Pro. He claims to have had 38 fights (Boxrec has 26 so far!) he must have had some ability as he went seven rounds with a young Chris Finnegan.

Did anyone here see him fight? What was his fighting style etc

Thanks in advance.

I didn't know he had boxed as a pro - interesting.

What is also interesting is that he knocked out Joe Gregory, who I believe is the current trainer of John Mcdermott. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Although I must say Joe was thrown in at the deep end in only his fourth fight and Ingle's 24th.

I'd say its a pretty safe bet his own fighting style was what he went on to teach? Hit and not be hit via some limbo type defensive movements and good, power punching technique. He looks like a handy fornicator in the old B&W pics I've seen of him.

An old BBC clip was once shown of him fighting finnegan.Harry carpenter was commentating.Finnegan had just turned pro after winning the olympic gold.Ingle was giving finnegan all the trouble he couldnt handle, and quite frankly making him look really bad.Carpenter was saying that finnegan wasnt getting it all his own way and the Irish fighter Ingle might cause an upset. After 3 rounds or so Carpenter anouncced thats all the BBC had time for and the broadcast ended. The fight got stopped with Ingle recieving a cut due to a clash of heads the ref took the opportunity to step in before there was an upset. This was an undercard fight, but I dont know what the main fight was.

Ingles fighters didnt always have the style they do now..... a few old timers have told me that pre Bomber Graham they were fairly orthodox

One thing about Ingle he should be the Amateur England Coach. He wanted to do it and would do a good job.

That man had a big fall out with the powers above over mixing Amateurs and Pros at his Gym and now look at good old Frank :o

There was an article written by Graham on secondsout quite a while back Offering Prince Naseem his services as trainer should there be a comeback, Graham wrote that he'd invented the style.

I think if any of u saw the old footage you would realise that in fact, Ingle was a fore runner of the Herol Graham,Naseem Hamed,Junior Witter ,Johnny Nelson style he helped develop without a doubt.
As for Graham I remember watching him as an amateur,(his then amateur trainer a Jamcian guy called DES,who himself was a good fighter. He also trained Jawaid Khaliq amateur and pro behind the scenes, while FIDEL CASTRO smith took all the credit) took Graham to Ingle to develop his style further.Grahams last few amateur title fights were under the guidance of Ingle before Graham turned pro.
And the reason why Hamed never took up the offer from Graham is because Hamed had seen all the mistakes Graham had made through his career and had very little respect for him.
Surely if Graham had developed the style he would be producing some decent fighters now, which isnt the case.I know he trained Brendan Ingle reject Daniel teesdale for a while ,and big things were expected but never materialised.
There have been a few fighters who trained under Ingle who moved on to start their own Gyms, but without the level of success that Ingle has had.All have tried to copy his training system which was being used at the time of their careers, but without sound knowledge they havent been able to develop it any further.Ingle on the other hand has continued to update and fine tuning the system as only someone with his knowledge and experience of fighters and boxing can.
Glyn Rhodes an ex Ingle fighter has had very limited success and has not produced any notable fighters.
Dave Coldwell seems to be doing better as a promoter than he was as a fighter. At one point he was running a gym for Ingle in another part of the city using the Ingle system, but has since moved on to other premises and started out on his own.In the limited time Coldwell has been operating he has surpassed Herol Graham and Glyn Rhodes and has a healthy stable of fighters.Whether he has the insight as a trainer that he lacked as a fighter remains to be seen he can certainly talk the talk, but walking the walk is another matter.
As always "Be judged not by what you say,but by what you do"

Actually I heard Ingle was a bit of a tough old school slugger...

I remember Barry McGuigan once talking on this subject on Ringside. I think it was around the time of the Ingle-Naz split.

He said something along the lines of "Ingle never fought like that as a Pro (refering to the Naz/Bomber style) it was Herol Graham who introduced that style to the gym".

Barry may be wrong but I clearly remember him saying that.

No Barry was right, and Brenden was a slugfest type boxer who loved a brawl..

Good post.
I feel i did learn a great deal during my time at the ingles.True, the system does work, but i can't speak for the others who have been there moved on and set up on their own..but as myself, the things i've learnt from 'the ingle way' that i agree with, i use and then add my own beliefs and also the methods of others i have great respect for. This is what makes boxing great.Everyone has their own ideas, only a fool can dismiss something that has brought success.
As for Herol,i agree,he doesn't seem to be turning many prospects out.My theory on that is that he seems to be trying to get them to box the same way as he did.Not everyone can box like herol, not many are suited to the style.
As for being judged?
Don't judge me now, judge me when i've finished.
Remember,Brendan along with every other success story took years to get to the top.
I've had my gym four and a half yrs.Been a manager less than a year,a promoter for 18mnth.
Haven't done 'jack' yet of great importance, but there's a long way to go yet.I may be a success,i may be a laughing stock, but like ya say guru,i'm better at what i do now than what i was when i was a fighter!!!

Interesting, maybe Ingle is teaching his fighters to avoid the mistakes he made in the ring?
