Canelo Kovalev Event Failure

How they're going to have a fight involving Canelo, the top cash cow, if not top 3 earner, wait for the UFC main event to pass? Nate Diaz, while likeable, is not even the top earner in UFC. DAZN, or whoever made this call should've grew some balls and stood up for boxing.

Yep, DAZN screwed up.

Only reason dazn did this is they hold foreign rights to broadcast ufc.
But it was a terrible decision. Biggest fight of the year became a 2nd rate product

The fight was a circus attraction to begin with, and an undercard not worthy of even being televised, let alone PPV for some.
Stuff dazn, stuff the ufc, and stuff greedy ppv's that aren't ppv's.

I agree. The wait for the main event was just infuriating. I had friends over. That was effing torture. One of them actually had to leave because he had to work this morning. Never even got to see the fight. Absolutely ridiculous. Canelo/GGG 2 had about a 2 hour wait as well. I really hope they sort this out and it never happens again

It wasn’t DAZN’s decision either.
MGM called Dana White.

That's when it's up to the promoter to put their foot down. MGM works for the promoters who paid them, not the other way around.

MGM called Dana White after it was announced that it would be postponed.
MGM did this to satisfy the people in attendance from being pissed.
ESPN then allowed the mgm to show their main event

"So we were sitting there, and MGM called and said that, ‘you guys are halfway through your co-main event right now, people are losing their minds here,’ or whatever. ‘Can we show the Diaz fight at the MGM?,’” White explained.
“And I was just like, ‘Holy sh-t! This is crazy! This is getting crazier by the minute!’ I woke up and dreamed all this, that it could happen. It was nuts. And of course, we said yes, and they did and wow.”
White explained that he warned Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya to stage Canelo-Kovalev on a different date.
“They’re not showing my main event at their cards because somebody won and lost, it’s a much bigger picture than that,” White said.
“You guys know how I am, I f----ing hate Oscar De La Hoya, he’s a scumbag, a snake. I told him not to go on this night. He did what he wanted to do and here we are. I respect Canelo and all the other fighters and guys who participate in the sport of boxing, and we got it worked out yesterday to where fans could see the other fights.
“He didn’t do any of that. You think that idiot did that?. He did none of that. It was much smarter people that surround him that started to do stuff, it wasn’t that moron. He’s an assh-le. How much more can I prove myself that this guy is an assh-le and a complete f--- up.
"Right up to this fight, everything he’s done. I used to help this guy, promote his fights, go on social media and say I’m watching. Then we did [Conor] McGregor [vs. Floyd] Mayweather, he tells people not to watch. Who does that? He says it’s a disgrace to boxing. Then he says he wants to fight McGregor next. He’s a snake, an all around bad guy. He’s really f---ing weird too. Just to top it off.”

With DAZN unwilling to start Canelo-Kovalev until the conclusion of UFC 244, MGM executives asked ESPN if it could show the main event on the big screens inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena. ESPN said yes and now the main event coverasge of UFC 244 is on the big screens for the crowd here.

And Dana is 100% right oscar wouldn't have the brains to do that.
He just expected the fans to sit for an extra hour doing nothing.
Glad the MGM used there head

Not the first time, remember Canelo-GGG 2..
The undercard was such a mismatch.
Román González def. Moisés Fuentes
5 rounds
David Lemieux def. Gary O'Sullivan
1 round
Jaime Munguia def. Brandon Cook
3 rounds
Because they all finished so early, the main event had a set time to start. Im not sure what they did on HBO, but in the UK BT Sport showed a re-run of the first fight.

I still find it amusing when (goes both ways) a flagship fight/card is on the same as another in the other sport.

DAZN laid out fifty million dollars for a fight that nobody asked for, did a poor job of promoting it, and allowed MGM/Dana White to big-foot their event.

They would have lost more views going head to head. I know Canelo is the top draw in boxing, but this UFC event was huge. The POTUS, the Rock, Roberto Duran, amongst other big stars were in attendance at the MSG event Saturday. It was simply a bigger event. The buys will reflect this once they are released. At this point in time UFC is a superior product.

Then why make the PPV on the same day/same time in the first place? And even if UFC being a superior product is true, it shows that those in boxing have no balls having no confidence in their own top seller.

Well, apparently Dana told Oscar they had November 2nd slotted already and to put his card on a different date. This all points to Oscar being ignorant. It actually worked out good for me as I wanted to watch the Canelo fight but thought I'd miss it due to the UFC card. I was pleasantly surprised at the time when I switched over and saw that the boxing event.

It's just that dazn thought lower prices would be the answer when it's just that Americans don't care about boxing. Someone like canelo can generate casual buys on a remote but none of those people are signing up for an app.

I thought it was a total shambles. Watching Canelo resting on a sofa for over an hour because that MMA stuff was on the other side of the US. I got up at 4am to watch the fight then fell asleep when it became clear it was delayed. What a farce!

You think they should eh..
DAZN wasn't confident in the viewing figures here.. If they were convinced Canelo-Kovalev was going to do better numbers than Masvidal-Diaz, they would have just put it on.. You gotta think about the fans in the arena too..
