Not sure, I've been a fan for a few years. Around here it might be due to loma worship. Doesn't seem to be love for anyone in or around his division.

• He was unaccomplished as an amateur, which means he’s only recently arrived on the world-scene, rather than considered an established long-term star.
• He doesn’t speak English.
• He’s a super-featherweight.
• He hasn’t beaten any truly big names.
• He’s a Top Rank fighter, which means he’s promoted by the notorious bridge-burner, Bob Arum.
• His fights are televised by ESPN, with that network usually drawing small viewing figures.
• And the list goes on-and-on...

That doesn't really explain why he's not popular on the level of Barrera or Morales. Those guys were small and didn't speak much English either.

Not sure. Anyone know why he has been suspended by California State Athletic Commission until 2019-11-09?

Boxing was much bigger in the States then.

What I’ve wrote does explain things.
You’ve focused on one element, but the combination of the points I’ve listed can’t help advance careers.
Address each point I wrote and then explain how they also apply to Barrera and Morales.
Come clean kid and admit they don’t, hence the reason for you refraining from commenting on those points.

You both make good points!! I live only a few miles from the Mexican border & watched the fights (Canelo/Berchelt/UFC) at a local grill with no cover charge. The guys I was with were 2 American-born & 2 Mexican-born. The 2 born in US never even heard of Berchelt before that night. Of the 2 born in Mexico (Baja California) one recognized the name Berchelt but didnt know hardly anything about him.
The big difference between Barrera/Morales and Berchelt is that Barrera & Morales were both getting good TV exposure to US audiences when they were still teenagers. Morales was only 19 when he was featured on the DeLaHoya-Chavez I PPV undercard in June 1996. Barrera was only 18 when he started fighting on US television ("Fight Night at the Forum" on Fox). He was headlining HBO main events like his legendary FOY war with Kennedy McKinney in 1996. Once MAB was a name in the US he hardly ever fought south of the border for the rest of his career.
Berchelt in contrast was already 25 when he got his first US television exposure on HBO in 2017 > his first fight with Francisco Vargas. Plus most of Berchelt's pre-US fights were faraway in Yucatan region, over 2,500 miles from the heart of the Mexican-American fanbase in southwestern US (SoCal, Vegas, etc). So Miguel Berchelt got a late start in the US compared to Barrera & Morales and has had to play catchup ever since. Dont forget that Barrera & Morales also had their epic battles with
each other & Manny Pacquiao to boost their reps beyond whatever Berchelt is likely to achieve (unless he can get a trilogy going with Loma).

I mean to be fair Berchelt is not quite on the level of Barrera or Morales. But I think he's right where Morales was in the late 90s, when he had a signature title win and a few good defenses, but before the Barrera trilogy and before he hit legendary status.

If he fights lomachenko he will be popular for that fight and a legend if he wins.

SOmeone already touched the Yucatan-factor. As far as I have understood Mexican fans are pretty regionally partisan ones and Berchelt's homebase is far away from Californian borderlands.
I believe that previous Yucatan stars like Miguel Canto or Guty Espadas Sr. were not really All-Mexico heroes either. Too bad that Berchelt has been forced to come into USA - he should be pulling out masses in Merida instead....

Excellent question. Most Mexicans have mixed ancestry of white European (mostly Spanish) and indigenous/Indian/Indios ancestry. Here's a map of Mexican states that breaks it down pretty accurately. Blue states have higher % of folks with white Euro ancestry, red states have higher % of indigenous ancestry and purple states are in the 50/50 range. Notice that most with predominantly white Euro ancestry are in northern Mexico & most with mainly indigenous/Indio ancestry are in southern Mexico. Berchelt is from Yucatan region (born in Cancun, resides in Yucatan state).
I have lived just a few miles from the Mexican border for 40 years & based on the many Mexicans/Mex-Americans I've known I would estimate Berchelt is probably about 55-65% indigenous. I base that on his facial features as well as his skin color. "Puro Indios" are darker with more pronounced facial features than Berchelt.
