Tyson Fury has opened up on his extended spell with the great Emanuel Steward in one of the chapters of his newly-released book ‘Behind the Mask’.



The former heavyweight champion explained the situation regarding Steward. Fury had initially travelled to Detroit in 2009 to seek out the respected trainer.

In his autobiography, out in shops now, Fury revealed he spontaneously jumped on a plane to American in order to announce himself at the famous Kronk Gym.

Walking onto the sacred boxing ground, the 30 year-old said, ‘he was the only white guy in the place’ at that time.

He also wasn’t shy in explaining who he was upon first appearances.

“Where can I find Manny? – I’m Tyson Fury, the future heavyweight champion of the world,” stated Fury, who had just won the English title in a bout with John McDermott.

Spending the next six months out of the ring, Fury stayed with Steward for a month. Originally, Fury was only supposed to be there for a fortnight.

Steward took a shine to Fury and they quickly clicked. The former coach of undisputed champion Lennox Lewis, Steward had been overseeing the career of future Fury opponent Wladimir Klitschko at that time.

Blending in with cousin Andy Lee already there, Fury was soon one of the most-liked in the gym. He would regularly go out to bars entertaining the locals with his signing.

Fury even stayed with Steward at his home. ‘The Gypsy King’ pointed out, ‘he even bought me an extra-large bed’ when lodging with the legend.

In the end, and once his month had passed, Fury had a big decision to make. Would he stay or would he leave?

Having a young family made it an easy choice for Fury. With his loved ones firmly in mind, he headed home to be with wife Paris and continue his career in the UK.

On March 5th or 2010, Fury returned with a first-round knockout, putting all he learned from Steward swiftly into practice.

The next bout saw Fury rematch with John McDermott, whom he’d shared a tough ten rounds with before heading to the Kronk Gym.

This time around, Fury was dominant. He dropped McDermott twice before taking him out in nine.

Taking in a great deal from Steward ‘like a sponge’, Fury was even invited to work with Klitschko in training camp. Whilst there, he received a pair of boots from the Hall of Fame trainer.

Five years later, Fury would wear those same boots to defeat the man he once trained alongside.

Tyson Fury opens up on split with trainer Peter following Wladimir Klitschko win

Tyson Fury has admitted his relationship with his former trainer and uncle Peter is beyond repair.

The uncle-nephew combination reached a peak in 2015 when Fury beat Wladimir Klitschko to become heavyweight champion of the world.

But they split the following year with Fury teaming up with rookie trainer Ben Davison for his comeback last year.

Writing in his book, Behind The Mask, Fury also admitted he also has no relationship with former promoter Mick Hennessy having since linked up with allegedly.

"Back in 2014, I didn't know that the forthcoming fight with Wladimir Klitschko would be my last with Mick Hennessy as my manager and with my uncle, Peter Fury, as my trainer," writes Fury.

"It’s sad that the split had to happen because Mick, Peter and I had a very good bond at one point, but it was a decision that had to be taken.

"Nowadays, there is no relationship between me and Peter or with Mick. It’s very sad, but with me, like most people I guess, once a relationship is broken it’s very hard to fix it. It hit me hard when I realised I couldn’t work with them again.

"As for Peter, it’s heart-breaking how our relationship disintegrated because at one point in my life he was like a second father to me.

My dad had gone to jail in February 2011 and had been handed an eleven-year sentence but was allowed out in February 2015.

"During his time in prison, my brother Shane and I practically lived with Peter. Everywhere Peter went, I was there.

"When I look back to those times and see how my relationship with Peter now has broken down it’s tough to take but sadly I've had to move on."

I like Tyson but I’ve little doubt he’s a liar. Did an evening with and he is absolutely full of shite to the point where the mental issues have been massively overstated imo.

Good luck to him, but not for me. People give Joshua grief for being fake, Tyson is no different. Give me boring old Dubois over the pair!

Got to agree ,Really went a bit low , promising but failing to deliver his purse for charity ,, that shows the calibre of his word ,, telling lies is one thing , using a charity to gain popularity is another ,,, whats more i don't really believe he'll fight Wilder in Feb

My bugbear with the modern world is that lots of people champion 'mental health issues' in a blatant display of virtue signalling online, but no one ever actually defines what they are on about. it is all so vague.

Saying that, any man that has blown up to the size he got, particularly a professional athlete, I would no problems believing he had major issues going on behind-the-scenes. Whether you would class it as 'mental health' it's not for me to say, but he clearly went through a period of instability when he was out the ring.

It is interesting that the general consensus is to 'listen' when someone discusses their issues,yet everyone is quick to dismiss it when some ACTUALLY does. A kind of "no, we meant a different kind of mental health....." attitude soon surfaces.

Every other fornicator on the planet seems to have it, and go on about male suicide in tysons age rang, so I suppose it's plausible. And his behaviour prior to his comeback was certainly self destructive.

I think he's basically made lemonade out of life's lemons.

I had pretty much dismissed the whole mental health thing. It just seemed so convenient at the time with his drug failures, going out on the piss after winning the world title..... but I listened to his interview on talksport yesterday - he seemed really genuine. Maybe a good actor but he convinced me mind!

In a way it doesn't matter, if what he's doing helps other people with issues to seek help.

Tyson's descriptions of his experiences with depression sound very accurate to me. It's very hard to imagine / relate to if you haven't been there. Nothing he has sad when discussing his mental health has led me to think he is fabricating it,

He ain't making it up, no way. He had cocaine psychosis from what I've heard him talk about.

While I don't like the idea of "means-testing" someone else's mental health problems, my sympathy is tempered by the knowledge that he's a drug-cheating, PED-taking pudendum who escaped virtually without punishment due to a loophole & flinging lots of cash at it.

That his mental ill-health seemed to coincidentally coincide with being busted for being a steroid cheat rather colours the whole "Oh cut him some slack" thing for me.

Oh yeah & I've met him & had a very long chat with him. If he told me the sky was blue I'd walk outside & check.

Years ago, when he was still barely a novice pro, Tyson gave an interview (I think with BN) where he alluded to mental health difficulties and depression. This was long before he became a big name.

Depreesed my arse , his depresion was , a tool for making an excuse for cheating ,, Tysons problem was'nt depresion it was BOREDOM ,,, Here he was , taking a break from boxing while he wrangled his way out of his cheating with peds bollocks ,, and what does a YOUNG multi millionaire ,, with time on his hands and dozens of arse lickers aroung do ,, he drinks , goes to footbal matches , drinks some more and partys , , then to help with the party he snorts a few lines , decides ,,, HEH fook sake i like this , , i've always ben training , and been missing out , , but this is great ,,

Then he's got the money , got all the new mates , and spends a couple of years going overboard , HE WAS FOOKING BORED THATS ALL .

How do i know , simple , i spent years in the gym , i was always at work then straight to the gym , ,AFTER i stopped the gym , i started going to the pub , and discovered what i spent years missing out on and i loved it , became a big drinker got fat , then i retired and got fatter and bigger , simply because i had the time and the money ,to go and drink

Last couple of years , i've said fook it , not going back to work , but i do go to the gym again , instead of the pub , lost 20 odd kilo , and feeling healthy again , learnt to do other things rather than drink , when i'm bored ,

Only difference with me and Tyson is i was a lot poorer and older than him when i found myself , bored fed up and looking to play with someone , and i don't get to write a book and make millions more ,, but heh , maybee he was deprressed , but i think its more to do with Boredom THAN MENTAL hEALTH

Correct - he was giving interviews about his depression FOUR YEARS before winning the world title: see https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2011/ ... -interview

All of this stuff about how he wasn't really depressed and just went hog wild after becoming champion / got depressed cos of failing a PED test etc ignores the fact that there is plenty of evidence in the public domain from years and years ago that he has / had mental health problems.

I totally believe his mental health challenges are real.

Although I also believe that the two issues may well have been connected in that particular period.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility to link a failed drug test with a negative impact on his mental well being thereby creating a downward spiral.
