Just watching AJ on the box and he was fighting Skelton and just wondered how he (Skelton)was doing after boxing ?

I always enjoyed watching Matt (Maybe one of the few who did). Didn't he have some trouble where he had assaulted someone who was having an affair with his wife (although not sure who'd be daft enough to do that).

He did really well in boxing considering he started so late.

Rumours were he was a lot older than he w as listed at.

Tough mofo in his day.

Never a fan tbh, such an ugly mauling, messy style. But understandable as he came to the sport so late and for that reason, his career must be respected. Real tough guy though. Am I right in thinking that he was not completely green though? Wasn't he a kickboxer first?

He was a kickboxer yes.

Yeah for those curious don’t bother looking for highlights.

If you look up details of the fight this should sum it up

Round 8 - Skelton was deducted a point for holding and hitting.

I think through his career that may be the only time he had a point deducted which is absolutely remarkable given what a dirty bastard he was.

He was an overachiever for sure to do the whole English, Commonwealth, British outright, and Euro thing, what the hell was he actually good at in boxing?

Tough, strong and had a decent engine for his size / age.

Reminds me of a certain fighter who is the reigning Olympic silver medalist and mandatory for the EBU title.

Tough, Strong, Decent engine will get you far in the Heavyweight division.

Believe it or not Skelton was an entertaining fighter when he turned pro. He scored a lot of violent KOs at journeyman level, and ripped through Mike Holden, Michael Sprott, Keith Long and John McDermott in savage fashion. His first fight with Danny Williams was an exciting brawl, but when he got shaken up in the final round it seemed to change him as a fighter. He boxed his way to cautious, dreary decisions in rematches with Williams and Sprott, and seemed very concerned about getting hit. Warren turned down a winnable WBC shot at Maskaev when Matt was good, and instead he got Chagaev years later in an unwinnable fight when he was past it.

I seem to remember the Martin Rogan fight being a fun donnybrook, but after that the Bedford Bear always seemed to quit as soon as he got hit hard. He was probably just too old to be fighting by that point though.

Few fun nights watching Skelton. Who's was knowing his wife? That must've been like shagging the top of a welly after Matt had been there! Cuunt probably has a prick like a pint can of Stella!

Skelton was gonna fight Martin Rogan in a rematch years after the first fight. I was at the presser for it.

Think Matt got injured and it never was re organised.

Matt skelton vs Keith Long was my first time at the york hall.

Sat next to Howard foster in the refs areat cos the press part was rammed. Skelton hit long with an uppercut in the closest corner and the contents off keiths nose and half a pint of blood ended up all over my crisp white shirt.

Memories.... :TU:   :OhYes:

Oh Stuarty my poor sides.

x2 he's was a bit like Joe Joyce - big, strong, relentless and flattening everyone up to a certain level.

Williams v Harrison 2 was meant to be Skelton v Harrison as well.

I’m always gutted I never got to see Harrison and Skelton square off in that fight.

Has anyone got a video of his debut against Gifford Shillingford.

A frightening KO from Skelton.

I used to have it! Chilling KO. Steve Holdsworth filmed and commentated on all of Matt's early fights, you can get a copy from him easily enough.

He used to complain that in his kickboxing days he never used to get stoppages, but flattered a bit in regards to punch power after those area level type early career boxing bouts. I don’t remember him ever changing his style that much, it’s just his punch resistance went in his late 30’s, which is entirely normal. He certainly maxed his potential out! Boxing News should do a feature on him.

I remember losing money when I bet on Skelton to outpoint Danny Williams in their first fight in 2006. It could have gone either way, but didn’t go my way! Lol

Bob Mirovic had his eye completely shut in about the 4th round of their match but then bizarrely quit on his stool. His cornerman was screaming at him to sit down.

Looked dodgy as hell at the time.

Ha Ha yeah remember that. Reminded me a bit of when Golota's trainer was begging him not to quit. Mirovic now spends his time questioning world population numbers on Facebook.
