Fighter Of The Year
Not wanting to "Hijack" the Tarver Jones thread, I thought I'd reply in a seperate one.
I think Johnson is a very good choice. But for me, it's Winky Wright.
Both men have similarly shown that you can move from un-fashionable fringe contender to respected champ using your fists rather than your mouth, risking 'hometown' decisions along the way in tough careers.
But I just love watching Wright fight and I think conducts himself well out of the ring. Both Winky's fights were enjoyable to watch and the "Rocky 4" moment in the 2nd one was Boxing Pride at it's finest!
Who else does everyone think is worthy of a mention?

Glen Johnson gets my vote although another strong shout comes in from Marco Antonio Barrera.
After that absolute battering by Pacquio he looked finished, I certainly wrote him off and yet he comes back to score a convincing stoppage win over Ayala before a career best rubber match victory over the heavily fancied Erik Morales.

Can't argue with either of those Priff, i would personally have Johnson edging it because he fought Jones and then Tarver which was two different styles to contend with and plan for while Wright knew what he would be getting from Mosley more or less the second time. Not that his two victories were not fantastic though, i would say both are good contenders for the award.
At British level i would say Skelton is a strong candidate for me, he is facing everyone around him and not avoiding anyone and more importantly winning the fights.

Johnson's a shoe-in: what an amazing year and so good that no-one, but no-one, begrudges him his success. A total role model for enduring with all the low blows that boxing hands out to taste the highs it can deliver.
Honorable mentions to Winky, Chico and maybe Vitaly.
Comebacking plaudits to Barrera and Kostya for different reasons.
British fighter of the year is a tough one - its been a desultory year for british boxing - all the eggs Sky placed in the Warren basket look a bit off now.
It would be nice to have a British fighter of the year that is near the top of the rankings in his weight but non of our top fighters have had marquee opposition this year. Calzaghe has had a year to forget. Eastman has made no breakthrough. Harrison: great comeback last year but so-so opponents this year on the whole. Johnny Nelson had just one fight to add to the one fight last year. Hatton had a nightmare nine months only partially redeemed by the last quarter. For Danny it was good while it lasted but it ended in pretty conclusive and concussive fashion. Clinton Woods only looks better when viewed in the context of what his conqueror achieved rather than any victories of his own. Witter for all his talk is even less close than Hatton to fighting a genuine top 10 fighter. Audley turned a one joke show into a long running farce.
So viewed in that context Matt Skelton, almost unbelievably, is a good shout.
A dire year for Britain, hardly anything to get excited about - the harsh fact is that the boxer of the year is a teenager who hasnt had a single professional fight.
Performance of the year is definitely Williams vs Tyson but domestically Barnes was a revelation against Hare. Comeback of the year has to be Carl Thompson who, again almost unbelievably, is a reasonable call for fighter of the year.
Forgodsakes, sort it out Sky.

Well Ottke certainly retired but he was not the best and its arguable whether he was a fighter.

In a very bad year for British Boxing, this is a good shout for "I can't believe he won" of the year. Many people called this a cruel mis-match pre-fight!
Honourable mentions to
Danny Williams
Clinton Woods
Michael Brodie
All of whom tried to restore British pride by trying (but falling short) for real world titles.
Am i right in thinking (even if we say that there are 4 world titles, rather then 3), no British fighter won a world title this year at any weight? (I've checked Scott Harisson won his back in Nov 2003).

Bubi, do you think Ottke would''ve beaten Calzaghe and why didn't they ever fight?

what i have heard is that Warren offered Sauerland 1 million euros when the fight takes place in the UK. Ottke got 3 millions each fight so he would be crazy to accept. Sauerland offered 2 millions for Calzaghe but he didn´t want to come over to Germany.
Ottke won vs. Glen Johnson who is the one everybody now is praying for in light heavy. for me Calzaghe was stronger and better than Johnson. but this year Calzaghe wasn´t that convincing. regarding Ottkes performance vs Krajnc (who is known as a hiter like Calzaghe) i would say 55/45 Ottke.

Mmm, seems to be more than a slight bias involved in these awards.
I honestly don't care who the best German fighter of the year is. But what I really hate is this Ottke crap. There is no way he's the best super-middle ever. Do you honestly think he'd have beaten the super-middleweight Roy Jones? For my money, Steve Collins or Nigel Benn would have slaughtered Ottke. It's total madness, you need to get out and view the world beyond Germany for a while Bubi, because let me assure you, there is one.

Mark Hobson must be a candidate for British fighter of the year. He's had a pretty good year.

haha, a fight vs "Babychin" Jones jr. would have been another knockdown for Ottke. he doesn´t have that much. i am no fan of him but Jones jr. is a Mickey Mouse joke, sorry. the whole world is now praying for Johnson in light heavy. wow. with all respect. Ottke won vs Johnson. Give this guy respect for what he has reached. if he would be british you would say the same. end of discussion. i know that everybody hates Ottke.

You're right Bubi, there is little point arguing with you on this one. If you seriously think that Ottke is the best fighter to grace the super-middle division then you are mad, and there can be no hope for you.

Regardless, he had many robberies and crooked fights. Calling him the best SM ever is possibly the silliest thing a boxing fan could say.
