Well, people, yeah, Leonard-Duran 3 was 30 years ago today!!
I was at college where they were showing the previews at my class room.. Then I went home and saw it free as all fights were in Puerto Rico at the time (I believe the government paid for the rights to carry bouts to all homes and they recouped by getting sponsors' ads' money) Then I got bored and wished I could have stayed in class instead.
Your recollections???

I've put it out of my mind. Thanks for the reminder...

Watched on ESPN classic not long ago. Duran landed a big punch that cut Leonard at one point. Leonard won most every other round, and it was just kinda ho hum.
That's my recollections.

I think it was with like 30 seconds left in the fight.

Yeah it was late. It was the only thing I really remembered. To be honest having already known the result I kinda just watched to see if Duran had any kinda success at all or if he was just an embarrassment for him. So I was looking for the successes Duran had in the fight. That was pretty much it.

- Some ripe Elmo style genuflecting revisionism going on here.
Ray cut early and ran like the stinker cash grab sychophant he had become. Great payday for the soon to be 39 yr old Duran in his 94th fight of yoyoing his fight weight with his street weight. Clearly Ray never wanted any actual engagement of Duran after getting whipped stem to stern in the first fight.
Nice SI article by Pat Putnam who inadvertently underscores just how far American boxing was slipping that later culminated in the all time hometown drug testing alchemy/stinker/cash grabber Money May.
Certainly not a fight I'd recommend to recruit a prospective fan.

No matter the outcome, Duran vs Leonard III
was one of the biggest stinkers of all-time.
The two defining fights were I and II. Fight #3 doesn't have or didn't had nothing to be bragging about. Both got paid and said bye bye.

Leonard fought the right fight.....but it was a stinker nonetheless.

I watched it at MSG and the place was like a wake all night long; no buzz at all in the crowd-even before the main event. There was a live under card and Buddy McGirt boxed like a genius and shut out Rafael Williams.

much like the music of that time.
Can only remember a few songs from 1989.

A real snore fest which took place close to that same time frame was Nunn vs Starling.

maybe because it was held outside on a cold December night ?
or maybe because Leonard was 33 and Duran 38 years old ?
Roberto Duran had landed only 14 percent of his punches,
but Ray Leonard still required 60 stitiches for his cuts afterwards

Well yeah but you gotta remember, Duran-Barkley and Leonard-Hearns 2 were classic wars and in the same year...
