Will Julio Chavez Jr make weight next Friday?

I've got an eerie feeling that Julio Chavez Jr will fail to make the weight next Friday when he faces Daniel Jacobs. In his most recent fight (in August) he came in at 175 1/4 lbs. Can he get back down to the 168 lbs. limit? Chavez has such an awful track record of coming in heavy.

Apart from the Reyes fight, how many times has Chavez Jr. failed to make weight?

I’m not being argumentative, this is a genuine question, since we see these types of threads created whenever it’s close to one of his fight dates, but I can only recall one instance when he failed to make weight.

He’s had multiple fights at catch weights as he’s unable to make the divisions normal weight. Examples, he’s faced Canelo at 164 lbs. and he came in at over 172 lbs vs Brian Vera.

Engaging in fights with catchweight stipulations is not synonymous with the phrase “failing to make weight”. They are entirely different concepts.

In terms of Chavez Jr’s weight for the first Vera bout, ESPN’s Dan Rafael reported that both camps had previously agreed to up the weight limit to 173lbs. Indeed, Chavez Jr. officially weighed 172½lbs, with Vera weighing 171¼lbs.

For their rematch, Chavez Jr. avoided having to pay Vera $250K in compensation when he hit the scales at 167½lbs, the identical weight as his opponent.

Finally, Canelo dictated the terms of the catchweight stipulations, which Chavez Jr. adhered to, because the alleged consequences for failing to make weight was believed to be a penalty of $1m per pound over the limit.

Put it this way:

• Chavez Jr. agreed to weigh 173lbs or less for the first Vera bout, which he successfully achieved.
• Chavez Jr. agreed to weigh 168lbs or less for the Vera rematch, which he successfully achieved.
• Chavez Jr. agreed to weigh 164lbs or less for the Canelo super-fight, which he successfully achieved.

Apart from the Reyes fight, I’m still waiting for someone to provide more examples of Chavez Jr. failing to make weight.

For sure, Chavez Jr. struggles to control his weight and he has engaged in quite a few catchweight bouts, but I’m pretty sure he’s only actually “failed to make weight” once during the course of his 55-fight career (unless someone can kindly supply more examples other than the aforementioned Reyes bout).

It’s fairly reasonable to suggest that a 1.82% occurrence of an event (i.e. once in 55 fights) is not indicative of a trend and nor should it be considered sufficient justification to award someone with a “well-deserved” derogatory reputation.

Junior weighed 173, Jacobs made 168 :oo

Jacobs agreed to let it go ahead anyway since it's non-title

According to Boxing Scene:

A currently scheduled non-title fight between the second-generation boxer and Brooklyn’s Daniel Jacobs will now take place at a modified catchweight of 173 pounds. An agreement was reached between the pair of former middleweight titlists—which includes an undisclosed settlement payable to Jacobs—after it was revealed that Chavez Jr. would be unable to comply with the previous contracted limit of 168 pounds.

Hey fellas, haha can I get a little credit here?!? (just playing). I knew Chavez Jr couldn’t make 168 lbs.

Daniel Jacobs 167.8 vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr 172.7

Chavez reportedly will pay Jacobs a $1 million penalty. No one batted an eye when Junior weighed in 4.7 pounds heavy. - fightnews
