Eddie Hearn wants DAZN to increase rates from $20 to $50 a month

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn says he’s going to speak with DAZN to try and get them to increase the monthly subscription for subscribers from $20 to $50, and he says reasons for wanting the increase is that he wants them to stay. U.S boxing fans want to continue to enjoy DAZN, but if the rates are increased to the levels Hearn wants, they may not be able to afford it.

Unfortunately increasing the monthly subscription by more than double could have the opposite effect with subscribers jumping ship in droves. What Hearn may not understand is how costly it is for the average household to pay for cable television, and for their internet.

In some cases the monthly bills are approaching $200. That’s a lot of money for some boxing fans to have to pay. Then when you tack on another $50 per month for DAZN, if Hearn gets his way, that could be the breaking point.

Hearn wants DAZN to increase rates from $20 to $50 a month

“Joshua-Ruiz was three times what Joshua got on Showtime. Even in America, it’s approaching a million audience [on DAZN],” said Eddie Hearn to SI Boxing with Chris Mannix. “That’s a huge number. One of the problems we had recruiting fighters in the early days was, ‘Oh, no one is watching DAZN.’ They are. More people are watching.

“We’re getting bigger audience numbers than Showtime. Charlo just boxed on Showtime and got 300,000. You got Jacobs-Chavez, and that’s going to do 500-600,000 on DAZN. Joshua did nearly a million on DAZN. I so believe in the product of DAZN for the value for a fight fan.

“I’m actually going to say to DAZN, ‘I think you should bump the monthly fee up.’ It’s $19.99 a month. Make it $50 a month. We don’t want you to come and go. We want you to stay and be a part of this community, learn more about boxing, digest the fighters, and grow with us,”
said Hearn.

Even $20 per month is pushing it for some subscribers, because a lot of them are already dealing with skyhigh cable prices. It’s unclear whether cable is super expensive in the UK like it is in the U.S. If not, then would explain why Hearn being eager to have DAZN bump up the prices to $50 per month.

Will fans still stay subscribed at $50 p/m?

Even now $20 a month is more than Showtime or HBO was, but combined it works out better.

Started at $9.99, up to $19.99, Then they had an annual sub for $99 which would equal $8 per month. Which is pretty decent,

Now he wants to do a more than double increase. $50 is basically a poor mans ppv. I understand DAZN show fights at least on two weekends in a month.

Wasn't that the whole point of DAZN in the first place? Provide good value for money at an affordable rate.

Hey, Hearn.. Maybe stop overpaying some boxers on DAZN.

What do you US fans think of this?

If they're gonna charge £50 in the UK, i'd rather just keep Sky and pay the off ppv's.

From a UK point of view; the cost of cable/satellite TV ranges from £50-£100 a month, depending on package etc. Broadband is £20-£40 a month, again depending on package etc.

Netflix is a tenner, Amazon Prime is £7.99, BT Sport is about £20. PPV's are on the up, the Joshua/Ruiz 2 card was £25. We also have a TV license which is £12 a month just to have a telly.

Bloody hell with those prices. I would never pay that kind of cash for TV.

My broad band internet is something about 25e per month and it is fast. I also pay 10e for HBO and that's it.

Those prizes sound like pure lunacy to me.

It’s less than a year since DAZN doubled the monthly subscription charge for US subscribers and now Eddie wants to increase that figure again by a further 150%?

A $50 monthly subscription is 400% greater than the initial launch price.

And I could be wrong (it’s been a while since I last checked), but doesn’t the annual subscription for ESPN+ cost only $50?

Surely Eddie Hearn is aware of an economic concept known as “Price elasticity of demand”, since watching boxing isn’t deemed as a necessity?

I’m aware that DAZN are seeking $500m in new funding, because the owner doesn’t want to keep using his own monies to keep the ship afloat, so perhaps this coupled with Hearn’s proposed price hike suggests things aren’t going so well for that streaming service provider.

DAZN's significant and continuous expenditure, whilst generating very little revenue, is unsutainable in the long-term.

DAZN does well anywhere but the US. It's on a slow rise, but it's just bozing isn't what it used to be in the US anymore,

Lol, dazn is losing hundreds of millions in the US. They have to try and get more but it won't work because Americans don't care about boxing. Wilder Joshua wouldn't sniff a million views. In fact it would probably do more on cable ppv.

Why Pay $50 a Month, when you can just go to a Local Bar and Watch it either free?, or with some good PPV's they charge $5-10 at the door, or a lot of times the Movie Theaters have the Big Fights for $20?

There are not that many good fights, there are a handful of good fights, and a whole lot of stay busy fights/fights against the least risky opponents.

I am a typical household. Average wage, have a family, etc

I had dazn for the last 3 months and now canceled. I dont see a purpose in having it when there is only 1 fight in the next 2 months i might like to see.

If they raised it to 50 i would never buy it again just like i almost never buy ppv. Its much too expensive to justify

We all knew this was going to fail but would enjoy it while it lasted

You cant give fighters with no fans and not exceptionally talented like andrade and jesse vargas big contracts thats just wasting money

Hearn thought he could get the pbc guys to join. Most didnt. They are screwed

To be fair, DAZN hasn’t failed yet.

It’s a relatively new business venture. And like most new businesses, they incur huge losses during the early days as they invest heavily in their product in an attempt to establish and grow a loyal customer base, as well as solidifying their market position.

This loss-making phase will inevitably be part of their business plan, but losing such huge sums clearly isn’t sustainable in the long-term.

And for DAZN, something has to change eventually, but I seriously doubt that raising their price-point by 150% is the approach to take to become successful in the long-term.

their play in the USA was to establish a presence and then bid to carry streaming nfl rights in the US when that comes up for renewal

They recently publically admitted that

If they achieve that goal who knows the future of dazn and boxing.

Nfl rights come up in 2021

What is they do an annual sub charge of £300? Works out at £25 per month..
