Carl Frampton will get the chance to become a three-weight world champion in his home city this summer.

allegedly and Bob Arum will co-promote his challenge for Jamel Herring’s WBO super-featherweight title in Belfast when the former two-weight world champion has recovered from surgery on both hands.

“Herring has agreed to go to Belfast and that is the fight we will do as soon as Frampton is fit to fight again,” Arum insisted.

Frampton, 32, believes he will be ready to box by May, having suffered fractures in both hands during his win over Tyler McCreary in Las Vegas in November. He had previously broken his left hand in a freak accident when a large ornament was knocked over onto it it in a hotel lobby in Philadelphia in August, forcing the cancellation of a fight.

He first became a world champion in Belfast in 2014 when he took the IBF featherweight title from Kiko Martinez on a freezing night outdoors in the dockside are of the city. He became a two-weight world champion when he beat Leo Santa Cruz in New York in 2016.

His last fight in Belfast was in August 2018, when he stopped Luke Jackson at Windsor Park, Northern Ireland’s national football stadium. At the time he said that he feared it could be the last time he would box in the city.

Frampton is on the slide no doubt. He should still have enough left to grind out a tight decision with it being at home. I'll probably go over for this depending on the date.

Carl Frampton’s challenge for Jamel Herring’s WBO super featherweight title will go ahead in Belfast on June 13.

Herring had long ago agreed to go to Frampton’s home city for the fight, but the Northern Irishman first had to recover from operations on both his hands.

The fight will be promoted by allegedly’s Queensberry Promotions in association with Top Rank. It is expected to be formally announced this week.

The former two-weight world champion last boxed in Belfast in 2018, when he stopped Luke Jackson at Windsor Park, the national football stadium, and at the time believed that it might be the last time he boxed in his homeland.

It was in Belfast that Frampton, 33, first became a world champion, claiming the IBF super-bantamweight title from Kiko Martinez in a purpose-built outdoor arena in the Titanic Quarter of the city in 2014. He added the WBA belt when he beat Scott Quigg in Manchester in 2016 before moving up to featherweight to claim the WBA title from Leo Santa Cruz in New York.

He lost the rematch to Santa Cruz in Las Vegas and lost to Josh Warrington in a challenge for the IBF featherweight title in 2018.

Last year, he only boxed once, beating Tyler McCreary in Las Vegas in November. A fight in August was scrapped due to a freak injury when a hotel ornament fell on his hand.

Herring, 34, will be making the second defence of the title he won from Masayuki Ito last May. It will be the first time as a professional, although he did box in the UK at the London Olympics in 2012.

Top Rank boss Bob Arum said he would be coming over to Belfast for the fight.

“I’m really looking forward to that fight,” Arum said. “Frank is going to announce it shortly and I am looking forward to being in Belfast on June 13 and then getting on a plane and coming to London where my guy [Kubrat] Pulev is going to put a whipping on Anthony Joshua.”

Busy that weekend but I’d love to have gone this. Will be a great atmosphere and it’s a fight Carl can win. He’ll be blasting away at the body all night. If Jamel can win, he’s then really improved his own standing.

Why? This will be regular BT.

Just cuz it’s outside doesn’t mean it’s a PPV.

Queensberry Promotions Official Statement Regarding Forthcoming Boxing Events

Image

Following the guidelines and advisory measures announced by both the Government and The British Boxing Board of Control, Queensberry Promotions feel it would be inappropriate to proceed with any forthcoming Boxing promotions in front of live audiences during April and May. The Coronavirus situation is evolving rapidly and we will continue to follow the Government’s guidelines to ensure the Health and Safety of the paying public, staff and the participants.

Regarding the two events we currently have on sale, we can confirm the following:

The ‘Seek and Destroy’ Event being headlined by Daniel Dubois v Joe Joyce on April 11 at the O2 Arena has now been rescheduled to Saturday July 11, still at the O2 Arena. Tickets will remain valid for the new date however, people who cannot attend the new date can obtain a refund from their original point of purchase.

World Champion Josh Taylor’s homecoming, scheduled for May 2 at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow will no longer take place on this date. Refunds are available from the point of purchase. We are currently working with the SSE Hydro, Top Rank and MTK Global to identify a suitable alternative date to reschedule the event for the Scottish fans.

Queensberry Promotions and Top Rank have already reached agreement for Carl Frampton to challenge Jamel Herring for the WBO World Super-Featherweight Championship in Belfast in June. This event was due to be announced this week. At this moment in time, we are still hopeful of being able to stage this event in June, however, we will monitor the ever-changing landscape surrounding the Covid-19 Pandemic. Details of the date, venue and location will be announced in due course.

Herring, Frampton Reach Terms For Junior Lightweight Title Fight

Jamel Herring and Carl Frampton can look forward to meeting in the ring whenever boxing resumes with its normally scheduled programming.

Both sides have reached an agreement for their forthcoming junior lightweight title fight, promoter allegedly announced on Wednesday.

"Terms are agreed for @RealCFrampton to challenge @JamelHerring for the WBO World Super Featherweight Championship," Warren tweeted from his verified social media account. "News on date and venue coming soon..."

The working date has been June 13 in Frampton's hometown of Belfast, Northern Ireland. However, the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has brought sporting events to a grinding halt, leaving every situation fluid until a clearer picture can be provided of when a sense of normalcy resurfaces.

The bout has been teased ever since both scored separate wins over previously unbeaten opposition last November. Frampton (27-2, 15KOs) scored a 10-round shutout of unbeaten featherweight prospect Tyler McCreary in their 128-pound catchweight contest. The win came three weeks after Herring (21-2, 10KOs) lodged the first successful defense of his 130-pound title, handing Lamont Roach Jr. his first defeat in a 12-round decision win.

Both fights aired live on ESPN platforms, one of which will also carry this particular event. Should plans remain on course for it to take place in Belfast, it will mark the first pro fight overseas for Herring, a 34-year old southpaw from the Coram section of Long Island, New York who now lives in Cincinnati. The trek to the United Kingdom marks a fitting first fight abroad, as Herring last fought overseas in the 2012 London Olympics, where he served as team captain of the 2012 United States Olympic boxing team.

Frampton will make his debut as a full-blown junior lightweight in a bid to become a three-division titlist. The 33-year old tested the waters in his aforementioned catchweight clash with McCreary, after having spent the last three years campaigning as a featherweight. Frampton has served as champion at 122 and 126 pounds, the former reign beginning with a 9th round knockout of Kiko Martinez in their September 2014 rematch and ending with a 12-round nod over heated rival Scott Quigg in their February 2016 battle of unbeaten junior featherweight titlists.

Herring aims to make the second defense of the title he claimed in a clear-cut decision win over Masayuki Ito last May in Kissimmee, Florida. The ESPN-televised win landed on the Saturday leading into Memorial Day weekend, with Herring—a decorated U.S. Marine and two-tour Iraqi War veteran–properly paying homage to fallen war veterans. A military theme also came of his win over Roach, which took place two days prior to Veteran's Day.

Northern Ireland's Carl Frampton says he "very much doubts" that his super-featherweight world title fight with Jamel Herring will take place in June.

"There are a lot more important things to be worrying about," =https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing/519 ... d Frampton in reference to the coronavirus crisis.

"It wouldn't be fair on either fighter to prepare for a world title fight in circumstances like this."

Former two-weight world champion Frampton is currently training at his home gym alone rather than working with his trainer Jamie Moore in Manchester.

With the enforcement of social distancing, boxers' training plans are significantly affected as sparring and pad work are among fundamental elements of any pre-fight camp that are unfeasible.

"It's very difficult to work on tactics and a game plan without a trainer," said 33-year-old Frampton, who is hoping to become Ireland's only three-weight world champion.

"I very much doubt the Herring fight will happen in June, but I am training now as if it is, until I hear otherwise."

The 2016 'Ring Magazine fighter of the year' acknowledges that he is in a fortunate position, but that many non-elite boxers who need fight purses to survive have had bills cancelled over March and April.

"The British Boxing Board of Control needs to come together with the promoters and devise some sort of plan for self-employed boxers at this difficult time," Frampton said.

"There is more chance and more likelihood of the bigger fights taking place behind closed doors rather than smaller fights because TV covers a lot of money, but at this time everyone is in limbo and doesn't know what is going on."

Frampton vs. Herring To Land in Late Summer or Early Fall

Carl Frampton will have to wait a little longer for his attempt to become a three division world champion, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

There was a date in June, in Belfast, being targeted for Frampton's challenge of WBO super featherweight world champion Jamel Herring.

Frampton, who captured world titles at super bantamweight and featherweight, will have to wait until the late summer or early fall to get the opportunity with Herring.

Frampton, 33-years-old, has been out of the ring since last November, when he dominated Tyler McCreary in Las Vegas.

allegedly, who along with Top Rank is the co-promoter of Frampton, is working on a new date for the fight, in Belfast.

“We were looking for June but that is not going to happen,” Warren told Standard Sport. “We will look to get it on for late summer or the early autumn now.”

And Warren is also working on a new date for Josh Taylor's defense of the WBA, IBF junior welterweight titles against mandatory challenger Apinun Khongsong. The fight was originally scheduled for May 2 in Glasgow, and also postponed due to the pandemic.

“It’s the same situation for Josh, we have to wait to see what happens but that will probably be around the same time as well.”

The heavyweight bout between Daniel Dubois and Joe Joyce was scheduled to take place this coming Saturday night. The fight has been pushed back to July 11.

If the July date comes under threat, Warren will not consider holding it behind closed doors.

“That doesn't fit the criteria for that fight,” Warren said of Dubois vs Joyce being held in an empty arena. “It was night-on sold out. You can imagine what the atmosphere would be like. That fight needs to feed off the fans on the night.”

COVID-19 KOs Jamel Herring

WBO junior lightweight champion Jamel Herring has tested positive for COVID-19, forcing the cancellation of his July 2 defense against Jonathan Oquendo. Herring is feeling fine and expects to be back in the ring in a few weeks.

“Last week, I tested positive for COVID-19. That’s the bad news,” Herring wrote on Twitter. “The good news however is, I feel OK and have self-isolated until I receive a clean bill of health. My WBO Junior Lightweight world title defense against Jonathan Oquendo will be rescheduled shortly.”
Note: Top Rank has rescheduled two bouts that were cancelled due to COVID-19. Jose Pedraza vs. Mikkel LesPierre will headline July 2, replacing Herring-Oquendo. Also, the female junior lightweight bout between Mikaela Mayer and Helen Joseph is now slated for July 14.

Bob Arum: Herring-Frampton Will Be Rescheduled For November, Site TBD

If Jamel Herring and Carl Frampton win their upcoming fights, promoter Bob Arum plans to reschedule their junior lightweight title fight for an undetermined date in November.

Arum informed BS.com that the site for their fight will depend on where fans can attend cards and potential travel restrictions between the United States and United Kingdom. Herring, the WBO 130-pound champion, lives and trains in the U.S., whereas Frampton lives and trains in Northern Ireland.

Herring had agreed to travel to Belfast, Frampton’s hometown, to defend his title June 13. That fight – which was to be held at Windsor Park, a soccer stadium – was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Don’t ask me where, with all these travel bans and everything else,” Arum said. “But [Herring-Frampton] will happen. The plan is to do it in November. … I think it’s a terrific fight. Both guys think they’re gonna win the fight easy. So, we’ll see.”

Arum’s company, Top Rank Inc., promotes Herring and co-promotes Frampton, along with allegedly.

Instead of just waiting for their championship match to be rescheduled, Herring and Frampton have taken interim bouts.

Herring (21-2, 10 KOs) is set to make an optional defense of his title Tuesday night against Jonathan Oquendo (31-6, 19 KOs).

The 34-year-old Herring, a Marine from Coram, New York, and Puerto Rico’s Oquendo were supposed to fight July 2. Their bout was postponed late in June because Herring tested positive for COVID-19.

The 2012 U.S. Olympian has recovered and has been cleared to fight.

ESPN will televise Herring-Oquendo as the main event of a four-bout broadcast from MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. Handicappers have made Herring at least a 14-1 favorite to overcome Oquendo in their 12-round fight.

The 33-year-old Frampton (27-2, 15 KOs), a former WBA/WBO featherweight and IBF/WBA junior featherweight champion, has agreed to box August 15 in Belfast. Arum said an opponent hasn’t been secured for Frampton, who will be featured on the same card as another popular Belfast boxer, featherweight contender Michael Conlan (13-0, 7 KOs).

A deal for Conlan’s opponent hasn’t been finalized, either.

ESPN will broadcast the doubleheader featuring Frampton and Conlan live in the afternoon in the U.S. ESPN also would air Herring-Frampton as part of its exclusive content agreement with Top Rank.

Jamel Herring Back in Camp

Junior lightweight world titlist Jamel Herring, who has had a defense against Jonathan Oquendo postponed twice because of positive Covid-19 tests, is rescheduled to fight him again.

The fight is due to headline a Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card on Sept. 5 from “the bubble” inside the conference center at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, which also played host to Top Rank’s Tuesday and Thursday cards for most of June and July.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said he has his fingers crossed that Herring’s issues with the coronavirus are now over and that he will be able to successfully defend his 130-pound world title and set up a major fall fight with former featherweight and junior featherweight world titlist Carl Frampton.

“You’re not Dr. (Anthony) Fauci and I’m not Dr. Fauci, so who the hell knows, but I can’t believe he will be positive again. I just think you wait six weeks and it’s gone and we can do the fight. But do I really know? No,” Arum told Boxing Scene.

Herring (21-2, 10 KOs), 34, a Coram, New York, native and Marine Corp. veteran, was initially supposed to make his second defense against Oquendo (31-6, 19 KOs), 36, of Puerto Rico, on July 2 but the fight was postponed when Herring tested positive and showed mild symptoms.

The bout was rescheduled for July 14, but when Herring arrived in Las Vegas two days before the bout he was tested upon his arrival and quarantined in his room while awaiting the test results, which turned up positive the morning before the fight. The next day he tested negative with most believing that the second test result was a false positive. However, the protocols put in place by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and Top Rank meant the fight had to be scrapped for the second time.

But Herring messaged BS.com on Monday and said he was getting ready to fight Sept. 5.

“We’re more than willing (and) happy to honor our contract,” Herring said.

Herring returned to trainer Brian McIntyre’s camp in Omaha, Nebraska, and began training again on Monday.

“He’s fine,” said McIntyre, also confirming to Boxing Scene that the fight with Oquendo would take place on Sept. 5. “Matter of fact, after Jamel tested positive the second time, the very next day he tested negative. We all thought it was a false positive. So we took it on the chin. He went home for two weeks and came back on Monday. We are picking up where we left off.

“There’s four weeks left of training but we’re definitely being careful. We won’t go right back to sparring 12 rounds. We don’t want him to overtrain. We’ll cut it back down but he will stay in shape. He was disappointed the fight with Oquendo had to be called off for the second time because this fight is his biggest payday so far and he was looking forward to that.”

McIntyre revealed that he also tested positive for Covid-19 shortly after Herring’s first positive test, and he was not that surprised.

“I tested positive right after Jamel did. He probably gave it to me because we work the pads together,” McIntyre said. “I had mild symptoms so I coached from across the gym with a mask on, yelling at the coaches and Jamel.”

He said the others at his gym, including welterweight world titlist Terence Crawford and former junior welterweight titlist Maurice Hooker, were tested as a precaution and were negative for the coronavirus.

If all goes well for Herring on Sept. 5 and if Frampton (27-2, 15 KOs), 33, of Belfast, Northern Ireland, wins a tune-up fight against Armenia native Vahram Vardanyan (21-1-1, 14 KOs), 31, on Aug. 15 at the BT Sports studios in London, the plan is for Herring and Frampton to meet later in the year.

“Bob did tell me after this fight it will be Frampton after that,” McIntyre said. “As long as we come out unscathed and Frampton also, I think it’s supposed to be late November or the beginning of December.”

It’s a fight Frampton is also looking forward to.

“The Jamel Herring fight was meant to happen in the summer but got ruled out (because of the coronavirus pandemic), so this (against Vardanyan) is a fight that keeps me busy and keeps me active. Hopefully, I get the win here, and then we can have the Herring fight for the world title later this year or in early 2021," Frampton said.

Arum: We're Going To Do Herring-Frampton In November, Everybody Is On Board

Brighter days lie ahead for Jamel Herring and Carl Frampton, even if it has to come at the expense of the other.

The pair of hard-luck junior lightweights are back on course to collide later this year, assuming that both prevail in their upcoming scheduled bouts. Belfast’s Frampton (27-2, 15KOs) returns to the ring this weekend, facing late replacement Darren Traynor (16-3, 7KOs) live on ESPN (Saturday, 4:00pm ET) from BT Sport Studio in East London. Three weeks later, Herring and Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Oquendo (31-6, 19KOs) make their third attempt at getting in the ring as they are due to meet September 5 at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. Herring makes the second defense of the WBO 130-pound title in the fight.

Both bouts will headline separate ESPN telecasts and—assuming the fights happen and go according to plan—should lead to their own clash later this fall.

“Jamel Herring will be defending his title versus Oquendo. Finally, he will get that off after it was twice postponements because of this coronavirus,” Bob Arum, Hall of Fame promoter and head of Top Rank noted during a recent media Zoom conference call to discuss Frampton’s bout. “That fight will happen September 5. If Jamel is successful and if Carl is successful on Saturday, I have a date picked out in November where they will fight for the title.

“That’s done. Everybody is on board.”

“The past few years, there have been a fair amount of turmoil,”
Frampton quipped of his career. “Things have been up and down. I haven’t been the luckiest fighter in the world and neither has Jamel.”

With any luck, they will finally meet in November.

“One thing I can’t control is the virus… but we’re going to do that fight in November,” vows Arum. “It may very well be another Bubble fight, in other words no fans. We’ll have to get Carl over to the states to do it. As long as these two guys win, you can count on a title fight between Herring and Frampton happening in November.”

What that mean? Yes it easier to make but don't mean a world class guy with options and backing with MTK will be pushed to lose a title he just got.
