Liam Cameron Retires After Drugs Ban Upheld

Liam Cameron has retired from boxing after failing to secure his licence again.
The 30-year-old hasn’t seen action in the ring since stopping Nicky Jenman back in April 2018.
Cameron tested positive for benzoylecgenine in the same month as his win over Jenman, at the Ice Sheffield, and was subsequently banned for four years by UK Anti-Doping.
The former Commonwealth middleweight champion and ex-IBO Youth super-middleweight champion made a stand, insisting he wasn’t guilty, and vowed to fight the ruling.
But as 2020 got underway, within the first week of January, ‘The Cannonball’ delved further into it while also noting that he wouldn’t be back in the ring any time soon.
“After all the money, time [and] emotions spent on getting my licence back, I’ve been informed it’s over for me as they are keeping with the four-year ban,” Cameron wrote when revealing the news on social media. “The judge says it’s very harsh of UKAD to do this to me and I was offered [a reduced ban of] 15 months to begin with, but there’s no chance. I’ll go down on my shield.”
Cameron leaves the sport with a ledger of 21-5 with nine quick and has already turned his attention to building a legacy outside of the ring.
“I have a full life ahead of me and I will get a gym and become a trainer,” he continued. “It’s been an amazing journey, [going] from a fat lad to ABA champion, IBO Youth champion, Commonwealth champion and IBF number 11.”

UKAD quite harsh on some. 4 years for cocaine.
Whyte got away the second time.

I hate the lack of consistency in penalties for failed tests.
Seeing it regularly now in boxing and mma where lower tier guys get full terms whilst main eventers who bring in big money mysteriously get away with just a slapped wrist.

Seems you need to be a big money maker to get away with taking gear doesn’t it?

Benzoylecgonine is a cocaine metabolite. Its in your piss for ~5 days after a session.
What is the full story here? I do hope UKAD hasnt just ruined this lads career for a few snorts at a party!

Really harsh. Didn't Fury get 2 years for the exact same. They do truly penalise the ones who don't bring much in.
People at UKAD no doubt have targets that they must reach to justify their existence and someone like this is just a pawn in the game.
Shame a petition or something can't be done.

I don't think it's abut UKAD choosing to penalise lower-tier fighters over those that bring in the money, after all UKAD don't benefit from that money. Think it's more about how much money and clout the fighter has to defend the charges with, and the potential legal fees these would incur for UKAD.

He had already been warned by the board in previous months due to similar findings on a test he’d recently taken apparently.

Exactly. What percentage of boxers can afford to instruct solicitors? Cannot be more than a few percent given how unequal earnings are.

Dunno how much it would cost, maybe you can find a no win no fee solicitor.
Sounds like you have a strong case
