Would be a good scrap. Oubaali has surpassed many people’s expectations. He’s the real deal and he’s here to stay.

Donaire is coming off a ‘good’ loss. FOTY candidate against Inoue. He’s one of them boxers that has no timeframe in when they peak.

Inoue should unify vs Casimero and then fight the winner of this. He can have another big year even without Nery.

Good match. Wondering if Inoue can become popular outside of Japan. Lot people saying he should move up in weight but i disagree. Interesting fights in 118 : Oubaali, Casimero and Greer are still here.

Ya no need to move up yet, there are still good fights for him at 118. They should at least do a 'revenge' fight vs Ouby if he wins this

The World Boxing Council (WBC)-ordered bantamweight title fight is now subject to a purse bid hearing. BS.com has been informed that the session will take place Tuesday, January 21 at WBC headquarters in Mexico City, Mexico. It will serve as one of two major title fights to be made available to the highest bidder on that day, as a lightweight title fight between top-rated contenders Javier Fortuna and Luke Campbell is also up for grabs.

TGB Promotions Wins Purse Bid For Title Fight

TGB Promotions secured the rights to the aforementioned bantamweight title fight through a purse bid hearing held Tuesday at World Boxing Council (WBC) headquarters in Mexico City. TGB submitted a winning bid of $401,000.

As per an incentive policy adopted in 2016 by the WBC, 10% ($40,100) of the total purse will be held in escrow and awarded to the winner.

“This innovation gives greater incentive for both fighters to win the fight,” Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the WBC declared after the purse bid results.

As the defending titlist, France’s Oubaali is entitled to the favorable end of a 60/40 split of the remaining amount, or $216,540. The balance—$144,360—will go to Donaire, whose appointment as mandatory challenger came courtesy of a unanimous vote by the WBC Board of Governors, with his elevated and past championship status entitling him to larger share of the purse than normally afforded such a contender.

The surprisingly modest winning bid ends seven weeks of talks between Oubaali’s team—represented by MTK Global—and Ringstar Promotions, who has promoted Donaire for the past two years.

Oubaali vs. Donaire Tops December 12 Showtime Event

Once set to take place in the spring, Nordine Oubaali and Nonito Donaire will now help close the show.

The bantamweight title fight which has been months in the making will headline the December 12 edition of Showtime Championship Boxing. The show is tentatively scheduled to air live from a crowdless Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, though that dynamic could change depending on the status of the ongoing coronavirus delay which caused a months-long delay in the fight seeing the light of day.

An accompanying undercard has yet to be announced for what will serve as the last of a nine-event block announced by Showtime on Wednesday.

The fight was first ordered on December 9, exactly one month after both boxers appeared on the same show—though in separate bouts—last November in Saitama, Japan. Donaire (40-6, 26KOs) came up just short in the evening’s main event, dropping a 12-round decision to three-belt and reigning bantamweight titlist Naoya Inoue in their thrilling title unification clash and World Boxing Super Series bantamweight final.

In supporting capacity, Oubaali (17-0, 12KOs)—a two-time Olympian for his native France—scored the third win in as many fights in 2019 with a 12-round unanimous decision over Takuma Inoue, Naoya’s younger brother.

Little did they know at the time, the evening would set up a head-on collision between Oubaali and Donaire.

That union came about thanks to the World Boxing Council, whose title Oubaali claimed in a 12-round win over three-time U.S. Olympian and former champ Rau’Shee Warren in their January 2019 vacant title fight. The Mexico City sanctioning body saw its Board of Governors unanimously vote in favor of naming Donaire as its mandatory challenger last December, ordering a title fight soon thereafter.

The matter ultimately went to purse bid, with Tom Brown’s TGB Promotions—which doesn’t have a stake in either fighter—winning the session and thus claiming the rights to the fight.

Donaire has claimed major titles in four divisions, including two separate tours at bantamweight where he returned in 2018. The move was made in participation with the WBSS, where the Fil-Am superstar emerged as an unexpected finalist.

A 4th round injury stoppage victory over Ryan Burnett in November 2018 netted him the WBA bantamweight title, coming in his first fight back at the weight since a 12-round win over Omar Narvaez to complete his first reign back in October 2011. From there came a 6th round stoppage of Stephon Young, a late replacement for then-WBO titlist Zolani Tete.

Oubaali will attempt the third defense of his title.

Jaron Ennis vs Thomas Dulorme set for December 12th Oubaali-Donaire card

Mike Coppinger reports that top welterweight prospect Jaron “Boots” Ennis and veteran Thomas Dulorme “have a deal” to meet on Showtime’s December 12th Nordine Oubaali-Nonito Donaire card, a bout first revealed by Steve Kim last month.

The 23-year-old Ennis (26-0, 24 KO) is among the most promising up-and-comers in the entire sport, a genuine wrecking machine as destructive as he is active. He last fought in September, beating down never-before-stopped Juan Carlos Abreu in six; the fight was his longest since 2017.

Dulorme (25-4-1, 16 KO), though seemingly unable to get over the hump, has given some very strong fighters some very tough fights, most notably giving Yordenis Ugas and Jessie Vargas everything they could handle a couple years back. He was a bit flat against Jamal James this past August, but remains a solid test for any would-be welterweight star.

The card takes place in Uncasville, CT’s Mohegan Sun Casino.

Oubaali-Donaire Rescheduled For May 29 on Showtime, Says Source

WBC bantamweight world titlist Nordine Oubaali and former four-division world champion and mandatory challenger Nonito Donaire have had their long-delayed fight rescheduled.

Oubaali and Donaire have both signed their contracts and the fight is slated to take place on May 29 on Showtime, a source with direct knowledge of the arrangement told BS on Friday night.

The site for the bout has not been finalized but it will take place either at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut – the site of all of Showtime’s boxing events that have taken place during the coronavirus pandemic other than the Gervonta Davis-Leo Santa Cruz pay-per-view event -- or in California, the source said.

Oubaali (17-0, 12 KOs), a 34-year-old southpaw and two-time Olympian from France, was supposed to make the third defense of his 118-pound world title against Donaire in the main event of a Showtime card on Dec. 19 at the Mohegan Arena but Oubaali came down with Covid-19 and had to withdraw from the fight.

The WBC reclassified him as a “champion in recess” in mid-November and approved Donaire to instead fight former IBF bantamweight world titlist Emmanuel Rodriguez, who was willing to step in short notice, for the vacant title on Dec. 19. But then Donaire also tested positive for Covid-19 about a week before the fight and was removed from the card.

Donaire’s positive test left Rodriguez to instead face short-notice replacement Reymart Gaballo, to whom Rodriguez lost a disputed split decision for the vacant interim WBC bantamweight belt on Dec. 19.

Because Oubaali and Donaire had both fallen out of their title fight due to the coronavirus, the WBC eventually reinstated Oubaali as its champion and said he would be allowed to have an interim bout before facing Donaire in the mandatory defense.

Plans were in the works for Oubaali to fight former flyweight world title challenger Nawaphon Kaikanha (50-1, 40 KOs), 29, of Thailand, on March 13 in Paris, but due to Covid-19 issues the French television broadcaster pulled out of the event and organizers also felt it was unlikely that Kaikanha was going to be able to come from Thailand to France due to pandemic-related travel restrictions.

So, the Oubaali and Donaire camps moved ahead with getting their fight finalized and worked with Showtime on rescheduling the fight for this spring.

Oubaali has defended his title twice since winning the vacant belt by unanimous decision over Rau’shee Warren in January 2019 on the Manny Pacquiao-Adrien Broner undercard at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In his first defense, Oubaali knocked out of Arthur Villanueva in the sixth round in July 2019. In his second defense, he won a unanimous decision over Takuma Inoue, the younger brother of unified bantamweight champion and pound-for-pound star Naoya Inoue, in November 2019.

Known as “The Filipino Flash,” Donaire (40-6, 26 KOs), 38, of Las Vegas, who has won world titles at flyweight, bantamweight, junior featherweight and featherweight and is a probable International Boxing Hall of Famer after he retires, is seeking to win a bantamweight world title for the third time.

Donaire has not fought since November 2019 when he participated in the consensus fight of the year, a hard-fought decision loss in a bantamweight title unification fight with Naoya Inoue in the final of the World Boxing Super Series eight-man tournament. Oubaali’s win over Takuma Inoue was featured on the undercard.

Nordine Oubaali-Nonito Donaire To Headline May 29 Showtime Tripleheader

Nordine Oubaali and Nonito Donaire will try again to meet in the ring.

The oft-postponed WBC bantamweight title fight is now on schedule, with the two due to headline a Showtime Championship Boxing tripleheader May 29, the network announced on Thursday. A venue was not named in Showtime’s release, though expected to be announced in the coming days.

France’s Oubaali (17-0, 12KOs) will attempt the third defense of the title since winning the belt in a 12-round unanimous decision over Rau’Shee Warren in Jan. 2019. Oubaali—a two-time Olympian who represented France in 2008 Beijing and 2012 London—has not fought since scoring a 12-round decision over Takuma Inoue on Nov. 9, 2019, at Saitama Arena in Saitama, Japan.

The same venue saw the last ring appearance for Las Vegas' Donaire (40-6, 26KOs), the former four-division champion who fell just short to Naoya Inoue (Takuma’s older brother) in their World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) Bantamweight Tournament finale. Donaire had won two straight before that point, including a 4th round injury stoppage of Ryan Burnett to begin a second bantamweight title reign in Nov. 2018.

With this latest rescheduling comes at least the third assigned date for this fight, which was first ordered by the WBC in Dec. 2019. Little progress was made in seven weeks’ worth of negotiations, resulting in a purse bid hearing which TGB Promotions won last January. The hope at the time was to stage the bout last spring, only for the ongoing coronavirus pandemic to ruin such plans.

Showtime announced the fight last summer as part of a loaded 2020 second-half boxing schedule. The Dec. 12 date never held up for either boxer.

Oubaali tested positive for COVID-19 last November, forcing him to withdraw from the fight. Donaire was granted the opportunity to fight for the interim WBC bantamweight title versus Puerto Rico’s Emmanuel Rodriguez one week later, on Dec. 19. However, those plans were canceled when he also produced a positive COVID test. Rodriguez went to face Philippines’ Reymart Gaballo who won the interim belt via a disputed 12-round split decision.

Oubaali was granted the opportunity to make a voluntary defense earlier this spring. Plans for a March 13 homecoming bout in France versus Thailand’s Nawaphon Por Chokchai fell through due to travel restrictions imposed to offset the surge in COVID numbers. The development prompted Oubaali’s team to revisit this bout.

Donaire seeks his third bantamweight title win. The 38-year-old Fil-Am star has won major titles at flyweight, bantamweight, junior featherweight and featherweight over the course of his storied 18-year pro career.

Also on the show, Puerto Rico’s Subriel Matias (16-1, 16KO) returns to the network in a junior welterweight title eliminator versus Kazakhstan’s Batyzhan Jukembayev (18-0, 14KOs).

Matias is coming off of a 6th round stoppage of unbeaten Malik Hawkins last October. Jukembayev has not fought since a 2nd round knockout of Ricardo Lara last January in Montreal, with this bout marking his first outside of Canada.

The winner will face whoever prevails between a separate semifinal eliminator England’s Lewis Ritson (21-1, 12KOs) and Argentina’s Jeremias Ponce (27-0, 17KOs). The last man standing will become the mandatory challenger to the IBF 140-pound title currently held by Josh Taylor, also the WBA titlist who is entering a May 22 showdown with unified WBC/WBO champ Jose Ramirez for the undisputed championship.

Details of the show’s remaining undercard bout have yet to be revealed as this goes to publish.

The forthcoming event marks the latter of two Showtime Championship Boxing telecasts to air in May. As previously reported by Boxing Scene, the network also announced a show to air May 15, headlined by the junior featherweight title unification fight between defending WBC titlist Luis Nery (31-0, 24KOs) and secondary WBA 122-pound beltholder Brandon Figueroa (21-0-1, 16KOs).

Nordine Oubaali-Nonito Donaire WBC title bout set for May 29 in Carson

Nordine Oubaali will defend his WBC bantamweight title against Nonito Donaire on May 29, Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) announced.

The 12-round bout will take place at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California and will air live on Showtime (9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT).

Donaire and Oubaali are rated No. 1 and No. 2 by The Ring at 118 pounds, respectively, behind champion Naoya Inoue

The long-awaited bout was originally set to take place on December 12, but Oubaali had to withdraw after testing positive for COVID-19. Donaire was subsequently scheduled to face former IBF titleholder Emmanuel Rodriguez one week later but was also forced to pull out of the bout after testing positive.

Both Oubaali and Donaire last fought on the same November 7 card in Saitama, Japan. The southpaw Oubaali successfully defended the WBC title for the second time, defeating Takuma Inoue by unanimous decision. Takuma is the younger brother of Naoya, who dropped and outpointed Donaire (40-6, 26 KOs) to win the World Boxing Super Series in the main event.

The future Hall-of-Fame fighter, who is originally from the Philippines and now resides in Las Vegas, first won a world title at 115 pounds in July 2007, knocking out Vic Darchinyan. The 38-year-old Donaire would go on to capture belts at 118, 122 and 126 pounds.

In the co-feature, hard-hitting junior welterweights Subriel Matias (16-1, 16 KOs) of Puerto Rico will square off against Kazakhstan’s Batyrzhan Jukembayev (18-0, 14 KOs) in an IBF world title elimination bout.

Batyrzhan Jukembayev meets Subriel Matias on Showtime

On Saturday, Batyrzhan Jukembayev and Subriel Matias will collide in an what is expected to be an all-action IBF junior welterweight title eliminator at Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, California.

Jukembayev, who is ranked No. 8 by The Ring at 140-pounds, is looking forward to testing his mettle against the fearsome Puerto Rican power-puncher.

“I’m excited and can’t wait until fight night,” Jukembayev (18-0, 14 knockouts) told The Ring through Francois Pratte.

“It will be a great fight. Matias has a big name in the U.S. [He is a] strong come forward fighter, with power, who has a lot of experience.”

The 30-year-old Kazakhstan-born fighter, who has been training under the watchful eye of Manny Robles, in Los Angeles, appreciates his big opportunity and isn’t about to let it pass him by. “I’ve been training my whole life for this moment and I am ready to take over,” said the heavy-handed southpaw. “I’m glad that my American debut will be live on Showtime. “I’ve put lots of hard work and dedication into my craft and I am ready to show the world what I am all about.”

Jukembayev foresees an exciting match up but believes that his all-around game will see him prevail. “Do not miss this fight,” he said. “This is a great fight between two powerful fighters. I promise to give a great show to the fans.

“I have the ability to adapt to my opponent. I can box, I can fight. Everything he does, I do better. This fight is the first step to a world title fight. I will follow my coach’s strategy and we will be victorious on May 29th.”

Camille Estephan, of Eye of the Tiger Management, expects the two fighter’s styles to mesh and create a lot of excitement. “Showtime subscribers are in for a treat,” enthused the promoter. “Two excellent fighters that are top prospects with styles to deliver an all-out war. There will be nowhere to hide.

“Jukembayev has power, skill and is vicious, while we know Matias exhibits the same characteristics. All the ingredients for the making of a great fight. Jukembayev is hungry to show what he can do.”

Matias (16-1, 16 KOs) turned professional in 2015, and his early promise was covered in a New Faces feature that appeared on this website.

The now 29-year-old’s power was illustrated by impressive inside the distance wins over the likes of Adrian Estrella (RTD 4), Breidis Prescott (TKO 4) and Fernando Saucedo (TKO 1).

Tragically, after beating Maxim Dadashev (TKO 11), the Russian passed away.

Matias was lacklustre and surprisingly lost his unbeaten record to Petros Ananyan (UD 10) on the undercard of Deontay Wilder-Tyson Fury II, but has since rebounded stopping previously undefeated Malik Hawkins (TKO 7).

The Showtime event, headlined by Nordine Oubaali vs. Nonito Donaire, plus undercard action, will be broadcast at 9:00 p.m. ET/ 6:00 p.m. PT.
