The viewership for FOX’s broadcast of Adam Kownacki’s first defeat was almost as high as the network’s audience for Kownacki’s fan-friendly slugfest with Chris Arreola.

Figures released Wednesday by Nielsen Media Research showed viewership for Kownacki’s fourth-round, technical-knockout defeat to Robert Helenius on Saturday night peaked at 1,681,000. The average audience for their short heavyweight bout, the main event of a tripleheader, was 1,675,000.

Kowancki’s previous performance on FOX – a 12-round, unanimous-decision victory over Arreola on August 3 at Barclays Center – attracted a peak audience of 1,769,000 and an average audience of 1,727,000.

FOX’s three-bout broadcast Saturday night averaged 1,443,000 viewers overall. Combined with FOX Deportes’ live telecast, a total average of 1,533,000 viewers watched the entire show, which lasted two hours and 53 minutes.

So the combined average for the Kownacki-Helenius fight card achieved 1.533m viewers (headlined by fringe contenders that are fairly anonymous names), exceeding the 1.481m average for the Crawford-Kavaliasuskas event.

Yes, you’re right.

The point I was trying to convey was Crawford placing himself in a situation whereby very few people will ever watch his bouts.

Even though he’s receiving a $3m guarantee per bout, based on his contract with Top Rank, he’s clearly competing on the wrong platform.

I realise that my comments are perhaps off-topic, but the average viewing figures for the Kownacki-Helenius upset kind of prove my point.

Well of course, you're right, but Terence Crawford is typically paid four times more than Davis.

There’s no connection in what someone is paid compared to how many viewers they get. Or is there?

I mean look at DAZN. They’re paying daft money to everyone and I take it in the US, last I checked they had less than 1m subs?

New ventures, such as ESPN+ and DAZN (as we also previously saw with the PBC) are willing to operate initially at a loss and also overpay fighters in order to quickly establish their market shares, build a loyal customer base and to also attract big-name stars.

However, there has to be limits to their generosity. They surely wouldn’t want to lose tens of millions of dollars staging a Crawford-Spence Jr. super-fight (where the proceeds or losses were split equally between ESPN+ & Fox) if very few people tuned in.

Crawford is already earning $4m facing no names, but he’s going to want more than double that figure to face the likes of Pacquiao and Spence Jr., even though very few people actually tune into his bouts.

So I feel there is a correlation between audience viewing figures and purse sizes, but it’s not an obvious one (depending on whether the networks are focussing on growth or profitability).
