A massive fight between Hall of Famers and boxing legends Ricky Hatton and Juan Manuel Marquez was pursued by Golden Boy Promotions,
it has been revealed.
Around 2010/11, Golden Boy made move to make the super-bout a reality after Hatton had lost to Manny Pacquiao via knockout in 2009.
Hatton was never planning on returning to the ring again after struggling with mental issues following what was a devastating defeat.
But as Robert Diaz picked up the story, it seems the ‘Hitman’ was approached with an offer to face the Mexican star.
“Ricky Hatton came very close to a bout vs JMM,” stated Diaz.
“Both had lost to (Floyd) Mayweather and Pacquiao. It almost happened.
“I tried but Ricky was retired for a while. What a fight,” he added.
Instead, it seems Marquez made his move up to welterweight and took on Likar Ramos but eventually facing Pacquiao in a trilogy clash.

Certainly more chance of Marquez fighting Hatton than him ever getting his mandatory shot at Naseem Hamed, who Kept JMM waiting somewhere in the region of 2 years

I think W@rren knew JMM's style was all wrong Hamed.

There were a few fights out there for Hatton we didn't get to see. He got Pacquiao and Mayweather which were mega money fights yet shortened his career significantly.
I recall him being rumoured with Gatti, Ward, Corrales, Barrerra, Morales, Marquez, Corley, Judah, light welter Cotto among others at the time.
All of those had potential FOTY written on them and potentially would have made him a bigger star. I think his career panned out quite well though lack of activity 2005 onwards probably hindered him as he was best suited when fighting every 3-4 months so his weight was more controlled.

Easy win for JMM. Hatton face first style and wide punches are made for Marquez.

The fights that should’ve happened, IMO, were Cotto & Gatti.

Yeah those two fights should have happened.
I'd fancy Hatton to beat Gatti but to lose to Cotto

Marquez was never stopped in his career. He could have been waved off in the first round of the first Pac fight. He's got proven durability at world level so you have to think he's going to be in this for 12 rounds. He usually took a few rounds to get going and then took control of his fights. The same would have happened vs Hatton.

JMM would flatten him, way too good a counter puncher, i think Hatton would be leaping face first into hooks imo.

How would have a prime Hatton done against JMM?

I think he would've had success like Kat and Diaz did attacking, but ultimately JMM too sharp

I never, ever fancied him against Cotto, he would have boxed Hattons head off, weight drained at 140 or not. Hattons team were wise to avoid making this fight, it would not have went well for the Hitman!!

Hatton was known for having a devastating body attack but he was the one who would have got folded up like an accordion if they'd fought.

I could see Hatton vs Cotto as a Torres vs Cotto style war with the same winner. Cotto I think was a better fighter though he did come across a bit fragile at times....actually he is kind of ironic in seeming both tough but fragile, in that you could hurt him and stuff but he toughed it out usually

Both guys were really only hurt early in fights, from my memory anyway. The first time I saw Cotto hurt was in the Corley fight after he shipped a lead hook early and his legs were all over the place. A carbon copy of that happened early in the Torres fight although Torres was orthodox unlike Corley. Margarito was wearing cement under his gloves in their first fight so you have to over look that. Then there is only really Pacquiao left, who again got him going early as Cotto was trying to walk through shots to impose himself. His body looked like he took an electric shock after a walking straight onto a left hand from Pac. All the times I've seen him seriously wobbled have been within the first 2-3 rounds. I can't really remember any other times he got visibly stunned.

Judah hurt him too, Ali hurt him multiple times though Miggy was near the end. Pretty sure Floyd wobbelled him in round 12 as well. He would react the same way each time too, with a personal style of spaghetti legs.

Forgot about Judah.
The Ali fight
I'll rewatch Floyd Cotto tonight. That was actually a decent Floyd fight for once.
