Ken Buchanan - Why is he never invited onto TV?

The guy is a living British legend of the ring. Arguably the Greatest British boxer ever, certainly top 5. And he's still alive.

But surprisingly you never see him on Sky Sports or BT, or even on youtube channels like IFL TV, or podcasts.

Is there a reason for this? I bet some boxing fans assume he's passed away. It'd be good to hear his views on current boxing

Fighters like him are old school. They realise the game has moved on and so has the wider fan base. The genuine fight fan know his accomplishments. I guess that is enough for him and always should be. No need to trawl the nonsense peripheral to what he achieved.

Buchanan is a proper legend! It'll take a long time to replicate that kind of thing again!

I remember reading his excellent autobiography 'High Life and Hard Times' back in the eighties and one thing that struck me in the book is how he kept all the letters - tens of thousands of them - from the British public who wrote to him when he beat Ismael Laguna and the fact that he regretted not defending his world title on home soil.

But he is his own man - he has never toed the company line whatever that has been - he is a truculent, awkward, headstrong guy and I don't think he would last two minutes in a studio listening to Adam Smith and Johnny Nelson and having to say a card was good when it wasn't. :yay:

You might want that and so do I but the headhonchoes at Sky don't - so we don't see him. That is why his career panned out the way it did and all his world title fights were thousands of miles away - because he refused to kiss anyones ass.

He went to New York nearly 40 years after their fight looking for Roberto Duran so he could beat him up! You can't rope guys like him in and control them - so they will never work on the telly.

If you can access the Hugh McIllaveny interviews and articles on KB - they will explain his motivations and inner demons. :TU:

That was all he needed to say about his career. He was there and did it.

I'm sure i've told this story on here before for whatever reason but i'll go in to it unnecessarily deeper. I was a decent fighter and i always wanted to fight and that was that  That was my thing :salut: Both of us can stand and fight all day! Why not? We are decent people! I like the fact we can both fight it out and have a row!

There are few people on earth that do not have a few demons rolling around. When people ask fighters what make you tick. You will get an answer probably after their careers are over. Not a terrible thing, but it wont enscapulate who they are after the career gone and they have to move on.

He was too foul mouthed. He was interviewed a few times in the 1990s in magazines and it was all eff this and eff that, eff eff eff. Not to mention he was very dark and bitter. He was far too rough around the edges to sit in a studio with Dempsey, Watt, McGuigan and Piper. Wouldn't surprise me if he was an alcoholic.

Jim Watt, his rival, was the man TV chose. Aside from that he likes a swear!

I think I’ll change my surname to Gomez the way things are going and up like the other Michael.

Buchanan was my old mans favourite fighter. He was working on a building site in Paisley one day and he went to ask the joiner to move his ladder and it was Ken Buchanan. My dad was star struck. After all he achieved in the sport he was still working on the tools grafting! Nowadays you have guys like Dave Allen who are financially secure despite him being fuckin hopeless! :maybe:
