Another old classic. I remember this being shown on the bbc on a delay. It shows how you can forget significant things but it looked to me like Thomson should have been counted in the first. No surprises the ref makes a hash of it.

A lot like the Fury video I posted you do have to give some respect to how early Haye took this risk.

I just cast my eye over Hayes record again and have to say it’s nuts that he only went the distance 3 times in his whole career. That’s a hell of a statistic.

I was at this fight and had many a conversation with David both before and after the Thompson. Not that my opinion counted for much but I did stress many times and remember saying to him 'don't you think this fight is a little too early in your career'?

Career changing night for Haye. Clearly always had a worry about emptying the tank rushing for a knockout after this and learnt to take his time. Wouldn't have had some of his later career wins without learning from this fight

Brilliant fight, Thompson was one seriously hard fcuker wasn’t he? Probably the best thing that ever happened to Haye in retrospect. Proper kick up the arse.

Later in his career Haye’s training regimes and camps were clearly of the highest order (Bellew fights aside.) whenever I saw footage of his training or heard guys like Carl Frampton praising his work ethic in training I always think back to the Thompson fight where he learned the lesson about how hard he actually has to train.

Thinking back, one fight I regret never happening is Haye vs Mark Hobson. I swear to god that fight was signed and for some reason fell through. Am I remembering this wrongly?

At the time I think Haye's team felt it was an easy chance to grab the IBO belt (which seemed to be more of a 'thing' in that period). Most seemed to think Thompson was shot to bits.

Too right he was. I don’t know what the ref was thinking, he must have been in a hurry to get home or summat.
