Is Lloyd Honeyghan massively underappreciated

Honeycomb beat up unbeaten prime Curry (then ranked close to #1 p4p) and was a legit undisputed world champ. He was a multi time Ring and lineal champ. He had other good wins too and was victorious in several title fights., he had a world class career even without Curry.
This was after breezing up through Brit and Euro level and doing the whole commonwealth+brit+Euro thing. Yet we seem to hear far more about how amazing the likes of Herrol Graham were or what gifts Kirk had and very little about Honeyman when talking about fighters of the past from 147-160 ish, or for the british greats
These are some major, major accomplishments he had at the absolute highest level. He is a legit Brit ATG and could easily be in the international boxing hall of fame, like his victim Donny Curry. Maybe being American would've helped lol

Loved Honeyghan but must admit I've never felt he was massively under-appreciated on here, as whenever his name has come up he's had a lot of praise. Just because there's been a recent bit of debate around Laing and Graham shouldn't over-shadow that fact.
He damaged his legacy a bit by hanging around for too long when he was clearly shot - was never the same fighter after the Starling and Breland losses IMO - but I can't think of anyone on here that has argued in the past against him being a legit Brit ATG.

Aye agree with that, I’d say Honeyghan is pretty widely appreciate as one of the best UK fighters of the last 50 years?
Often we confuse how often someone is spoken about with how highly they are rated. The two often aren’t related, in fact I think it’s in part the fact that LG is widely accepted to be one of England’s best fighters that he is talked about less often than others who split opinion?

Tbf, never said he was under rated, i said under appreciated, i feel part of that under appreciation is that the great man doesnt get nearly the adoration and discussion that he deserves based on his achievments, there is more for far lesser fighters
sure, you bring him up and people will say he was really good, but godt damn bruhs actively pay the man his dues

Yeah he is underappreciated because us being British there's never a shortage of people who talk about his achievements without a "yeah but..."

I think fizzjambo nailed it mate. He doesn't get the same level of discussion precisely because his achievements aren't in doubt. Victim of his own success!

I stil remember thinking those burgundy sequin shorts he wore when he beat Curry were the coolest thing ever

Can still remember where I was when I heard the result on the radio - didn't believe it at first!

Nor did I because Curry was going on to fight Marvin Hagler with the smart money on Curry! Did you watch it on the telly on the Sunday after dinner time (lunch where you are...) I didn't even listen it live on the radio because I thought Honeyghan was going to get served up!
Remember when he fought Colin Jones and Jones got proper served up - during the week that was because in school the next day, everyone was going 'I am really disappointed' in a stupid Welsh accent.
Curry was world class against Jones, but probably Jones was totally made for him!

I didn't listen to it live on the radio - if my memory is correct I heard it on the Sunday morning news in the car when we were being driven back from our Tae-kwon Do lesson by my mate's older brother, so probably the 12 o'clock news. All of us in the car were shocked! Then watched the fight itself in the evening.
Loved Jones as a fighter, but Curry looked like an ATG in the making at that time... I still can't quite believe how quickly his career deteriorated.

Is it true years after they fought, Honeyghan and Curry bumped into each other at some event and Curry accused Lloyd of ruining his life or is that just an old wives tale?

It goes back to my original point about accepting crap that you have little control over - he moved up and was giving Mike McCallum a boxing lesson and then McCallum went BAM and that was that.
I remember Curry beating up Gianfranco Rosi in Italy to win the WBC light middleweight title - so he had some good performaces after it but he wasn't the touted ATG like he was before the Honeyghan fight. As Deserter was saying - that was a massive shock at the time - probably bigger than Ruiz KOing Joshua or along those lines at least.

I agree with this, Honeyghan has always seemed to get due praise but I feel that his achievements may have been clouded by some of his performances later in his career. I'd even say that he was well shot when Breland did him in three.
However, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that he was a fine champion and those that saw him in his prime know how good he was.

Honeyghan declined very quickly. Apart from that he was a decent boxer

Honeyghan did seem to go from a tidy boxer to trying to blow opponents out following the Curry win that's for sure.

Honeyghan - he was an intense guy. I remember the Hatcher fight, he banged him out then just walked off as if he had decided it was over. Then he decked Bumphus as he got off his stool.
I really wanted him to beat Starling. I was a big Honeyghan fan. Still, boxing is boxing.

That's true and he really paid for it against Starling who just tucked up, let him blow himself out and picked him off. Not the same type of fighter, but similarities with Naz in the sense of the supreme confidence seemed to lead to a belief they could just blow their opponent away. Worked well against the Hatchers of this world, but not at the elite level.

Starling getting splattered by Molinares and the Molinares just turned around and started dancing away - he just didn't give a shit with Starling laid out like a brick
Starling getting done like that was one of the main highlights of eighties boxing for me

Couldn't fornicating stand him. He was like a jug eared and more unpleasant Apollo Creed wannabe.

Worse was that Vaca TD loss - he did the same thing there and Vaca just tucked in, counter punched off the back foot and just made him look daft - he would have battered Vaca if he would have just boxed him, afterwards in the Alan Beswick phone in on Red Rose radio - loads of people were ringing in saying how terrible it was - these days, no-one would care.

Is that the fight that was turned to a no contest?
I remember Starling fighting Michael Nunn in an utter borefest of a middleweight title fight.

Yup, that's the one! I don't think Molinares fought again, I might be wrong though...

I think he has become underrated a bit I see a list of the best British fighters on Facebook and I think it had benn/ eubanks / Hatton/ but no Honeyghan ! I'd say Lloyd had more talent and achieved more than those 3 . Eubank or Benn was never No1 in the world probably not even top 3 similar with Hatton

I'd put Hatton firmly above Benn and Eubank based on the fact he did beat Kostya Tszyu who was the undisputed champion and also coming into the fight with Hatton off the back of smashing Sharmba Mitchell to bits a few months earlier. I definitely agree that Honeyghan was a better and more talented boxer though and should be ranked higher.
