Undoubtedly had a shrewd boxing brain.
I wonder if him and Barry McGuigan ever resolved their differences.

Was Barry with Barney for the Steve Cruz fight ?
Just checked, yes he was.Wonder why Barney let Barry fight in that heat ?

Gosh, that's going back some years. I think they were still together for the Cruz fight, but it turned sour thereafter.

ITV did a very good documentary about McGuigan about 10 years back, think it was just as Frampton was coming onto the scene. The two hadn’t reconciled then and it was said in there that they tried to contact Eastwood to ask for any footage he may have of McGuigans career and he declined.

I always feel that McGuigan treated Barney extremely badly. They made each other a lot of money but McGuigan got greedy and greed always leads to a fall.

Many years ago I really liked Barry. I remember when he had the idea of setting up a union for boxers and I offered my services to him in terms of a job role. He accepted but for one reason or another it never flowered. Then I had an argument with him over something he said on TV but contradicted what he said in the media. For the devil of me I can't remember the issue but he wasn't to gracious. After that my liking of the guy diminished. Back in the 80s he seemed to bring the Irish together no matter what religion but I think there was two sides to him that boxing fans maybe didn't see. He really did seem a genuine bloke but I guess money and power do change individuals sometimes not for the better.

I saw he‘d passed. He was 87 so he didn’t do badly. He was great for boxing, especially in NI. I think McGuigan would have been a success with any manager. I was more impressed with how Eastwood handled Dave McAuley and Ray Close. McAuley hadn’t had many fights and Eastwood got him 3 world title fights. He also got Close 3 title shots (Ray happened to fail a medical for the third).

McGuigan has a reputation for being greedy!
As a kid watching him, he was an absolute hero, seemingly a great guy, IMO short of HOF but still one of the best Britain has produced.
I watched that afore mentioned documentary and you feel in awe, just a shame he is a greedy bastard

Poss he knew Barry wanted to leave and wanted the payday and to stitch him up.....
I remember talking with Colin Jones, asking him why he fought against McCory in that midday heat, he said because that was were the money was. McGugan fought early evening too.

Whenever Barry McGuigans name comes up now it still amazes me that there are acts in other countries preventing people from being both a promoter and a manager and over here it’s still going on and the cause of god knows how many lawsuits.

Barney never wanted McGuigan to take the Cruz fight. By this time i think McGuigan was taking more notice
of his brother. Where've we heard this before with boxers
Eastwood was pushing for a Wilfredo Gomez fight in New York. He was no mug.
Also, McG had signed some merchandise deal behind his back.
It was a brave effort in those conditions but it finished him in fairness. Never the same after.

He was a genuine houehold name wasn't he. And that night at Loftus Rd was fkin brilliant.
I read somewhere it topped 20 millions viewers which was just under Angie & Dirty Dens divorce
episode for that year
Loads of great fights were on the horizon, but Cruz finished him. It was pitiful when he came back a few years later
fo McDonnell to embarass him. Even prime Barry would have struggled with Azumah to be fair.

Jones knew the score, he accepted King won with a big bid, giving him a big payday therefore he was happy to take it despite knowing everything would be done to put him at a disadvantage.

Barry Mcguigan has always seemed to me a nice, genuine, honest person. With great boxing knowledge, his fight predictions and talent spotting ability are top notch.
But these stories of him being greedy with money and not as nice as he seems keep popping up. The Frampton court case didn't go ahead did it? That would have been really interesting to find out the truth about that.

Barry wouldn't have a chance with Nelson

Never mind the whys and wherefores of McGuigan vs Nelson. That’s a fight that definitely should have happened. The fans missed out there. Barry would have ripped into him like a cyclone and Nelson would have been ready. Still, it’s history now.

The concensus at the time that Nelson would have beaten him pretty convincingly, it would have been a cracking fight though.
It never struck me that Barry regretted that he missed out on Nelson. His style was made for Nelson.

I remember it was Nelson that pushed the fight, especially after he chinned Cowdell in 1 round

Aye, I remember that fight. It was scary. The first time I saw Nelson. Nelson wasn’t so famous at that time, he still had loads of his career ahead of him. So it made sense for him to chase McGuigan, who had a massive following. If Barry had beaten McDonnell, I’m sure Warren would have matched him with Nelson. All ifs and buts now though.
For me that’s the fight I would most like to have seen. More than other mega fights that didn’t happen for whatever reason.

Yep, it was a shocker. Remember the post-fight interview? We want Danny boy! McGuigan, she’s scared to fight me!
