I remember back in the pre-youtube and anything but NetScape and Frames internet days the Reid/Vitali bout was talked about. I think he rubbished it and said it didn't happen.

It did, I think it's since surfaced on YT a few years ago. It's a great KO, he's proper gone.

Thought everyone would've seen it by now

It’s unsurprising because they’re similar weights, but Crawford vs Mikey Garcia in the golden gloves. I seen a grainy video of it on Twitter one day and have never seen it since.

They both look really young and there’s a lot of lead-hand tracing, with Crawford a close but clear winner.

In reality Calzaghe had very limited international experience, frozen out of the olympics and commonwealth games, precious few international tournaments.
The only real chance he had at a better level was in the ABA's which of course he won in 3 consequetive years at 3 different weights. I think he was only taken the distance once in those 3 campaigns too. A brutal puncher before his hands went.

I always got the impression that the authorities took some sort of intense dislike to his dad and it never really got resolved so got frozen out, as you say. Shame really as he was a really tasty ama boxer and blitzed several big names at British level.

I've just watched the 91-93 ABA finals again on YT, some good names in there!

I watched that Calzaghe docu the other week as I've put off watching it for ages as I always found his dad slightly grating and the schtick Joe had but I have to say I really warmed to his dad in the docu and you have to hand it to him, although obviously his son was an exceptional talent, he did well boxing and training out of a shed.

As an ex-international kickboxing judge/referee I can also say that it was an illegal KO and Klitschko most likely won the fight by disqualification. You can easily see
a) from previous action
b) from the fact that they are fighting on open surface, not in the ring,
that this is what is called a Light-Contact fight, also occasionally referred as "continuous sparring". The rules do not allow for full-force strikes (neither kicks nor punches) and delivering such non-control technique is a rule violation. If it happens to cause the contest to be terminated, it causes a disqualification.

Knowing that - Vitali was neither making any effort to put hurt on Pele nor was in anyway expecting such a strike against himself - takes some luster away from the kayo.

Btw, kickboxing also has a form called semi-contact (aka points fighting). That also has limited contact allowed, bt the difference is that action is stopped each time referee sees or side judges show a sign of seeing a point-scoring strike. That one is then judged about (crediting a score requires 2-to-1 majority amongst ref+2 side judges) and action is continued after that deliberation. Very close to points-karate.

Enzo was a proper nutter, but a good and nice guy.
After JC retired he tried his hand at promoting, they didn't have a clue and wouldn't take advice either, ended up being a bit of a disaster. There was a doc showing that too.

I never saw the fight or spoke to someone who was there but it was talked about and I saw a programme with the names on marking JC won in 3
