British Overachievers

In light of the Ward comments on Froch, who else have overachieved from over here? Watching Ricky Burns just now and he certainly fits the bill.

no way ricky burns, he werent lucky dont get me wrong had a couple of decisions go his way , but ricky is a made boxer look at him long arms, good chin, big heart ,good engine

Lived the life by all accounts too.
You didn’t hear excuses after his defeats that he was out on the piss. I think I remember Kevin Mitchell said when he started training in the same camp as him he realised there was no way he was beating him given how much harder Burns worked in training.

It's fighters like Charles Shephard, who were all heart and workrate, but lucky enough to have a bit of a following and to get some nice opportunities.

I know mate i sparred him at the Barn in Coatbridge when we were ams and i've watched his career from the start. He turned pro and still had Rab Bannan (his am coach) involved and fought like an am as well. Billy Nelson turned him around and made him a top pro. 3 weight world champ for someone like Burns? He made the very most of what he had through hard work and dedication and deffo overachieved imo... I'm a massive burns fan as well so i don't mean that as a slight against him. If you asked him he'd be the first to admit he overachieved....

really sparred him, top man ,i was gona say 3 weight wasnt sure how big the other title was, i know mate i ve seen your posts your a clued up boxing man, hence how much you drunk ha , but i know where your coming from, its burns i think makes boxing look easy for him ,so that he doesnt stand out in any of what you say categories.like he is just solid in every deparment if you know what i mean

Richard Dunn did amazingly well to secure a shot at Muhammad Ali with a spotty record and a chin that regularly let him down, and I would also cite amateur great John Lyon, who was pasted in the 1980 ABA light-flyweight title by Repton southpaw Terry Barker (father of Darren) but came back to win a record eight ABA titles.

Definitely Bellew, a shot Haye (given didn't see it at the time) set up Bellew for life if not Bellew would be still be fighting today.
Would say Anthony Crolla. 4 losses and a draw a head injury and then became World champion and a few good paydays.

Crawford Ashley. Another good honest pro with a patchy record, which didn't hinder him from snaffling two world title
challenges. Both big big fights against 'greats' of the game. Failed in multiple EBU attempts also, though i had him winning the first one with Rocchigiani. Well promoted fighter.

Nailed it mate.
Bannans club was heaving but he produced poor boxers imo. Tough and high work rate but little skill, tactics or head movement.

I'd say Gavin Rees definitely over achieved. British, European and World Champion. At 5 foot 4 competing at 140, he made his lack of height an advantage. Solid career.

He had a few. But Barney Eastwood and Frank Maloney got him the big chances.

He’s a 3 weight world champion isn’t he?
Obviously having a good promoter, he was given them opportunities and he made the most of them. Maybe the fact that he was a 3 weight world champion, one of them was vacant, that’s where he might have overachieved?
I see Crolla and wouldn’t say he over achieved. I think his career was the best it could be. Multiple losses early, personal issues, then wins a world champion by defeating a champion, he really deserved that. Then had a number of high profile fights too.
