The WBC have confirmed that Dillian Whyte has taken legal action against the governing body about the date of his mandatory WBC heavyweight title fight.

Whyte defeated Oscar Rivas by unanimous decision in a WBC final eliminator last July to secure his mandatory shot at the WBC belt currently held by Tyson Fury, with the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman reiterating last month that the Brixton man would receive the world title fight by February 2021.

Fury is set to face Deontay Wilder in a third fight by the end of the year, while the WBC champion has already agreed a financial deal in principle for an undisputed world title fight with Anthony Joshua, but Whyte has now reinforced the terms of his WBC mandatory fight.

WBC president Sulaiman told Sky Sports: "There is a procedure with regards to the date of the mandatory in the heavyweight division.

"Upon direct advice of WBC legal counsel I am not in position to discuss any further."

Fury's US promoter Bob Arum revealed that he plans to hold talks with the WBC in a bid to delay or 'eliminate' the Whyte fight and the Top Rank boss suggested his fighter could even receive the status of WBC 'Franchise' champion, which would remove his mandatory title commitments.

"We will be talking to the organisations to eliminate mandatories, or to postpone them all for at least one year," Arum told Sky Sports earlier this month.

But Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has insisted that Whyte should still receive a 'monstrous fight' against Fury early next year, with Joshua battling the winner in the summer of 2021.

"The point of Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua and the teams agreeing to the structure of that deal - that deal can happen, that first fight can happen at the end of next summer," Hearn told Sky Sports.

"It will be 2021, but there is a big period of time where Dillian Whyte should be getting his shot at the world title and that's important to us."

Whyte is the WBC 'interim' champion and will return to action in a rescheduled fight against Alexander Povetkin this summer.



The 32-year-old has warned that his world title ambitions will not be delayed any longer after securing a guaranteed fight with Fury.

"The whole thing's a joke and I'm not putting up with it anymore," Whyte said earlier this month.

He said it was less than what he would have made against Chisora.

“There’s been a first offer but it is utterly ridiculous,” Whyte told Jim White on talkSPORT, “It’s way less than what I made against Chisora basically.

“It is a ridiculous offer, they’re not serious about the fight. I don’t think they want the fight, I think they just made an offer to cover ground.

“It’s just silly, I’m a pay-per-view fighter now in the UK which I’ve built by myself against all the odds.

“It’s not like I’m a journeyman. I’ve had nine fights since I fought him. I won them all in spectacular fashion.

“I don’t think he wants to fight me, there’s easier paydays out there for him. He knows that I will bring problems to his mum’s house, so he don’t want it.”

Yehh 2 different points. But he’s still had an opportunity at a world title.

If he had fought ortiz he would have already fought for the wbc instead he picked his opponents and pretended to not dodge a fight... Also if he had fought Pulev he would be fighting Joshua next as manditory

Yeh. He didn’t take the Pulev fight cuz Hearn can’t win purse bids and Whyte would have been paid around £400k.

Instead Hearn had him fight a non-title, non-eliminator against Parker.

He and Hearn chose money. He should have chosen those eliminators. They don’t always equal big money, but like you said, he would have had a world title fight.

Dillian Whyte is a floater on the landscape of British boxing and the sooner he gets a title shot the better, as he is nowhere near good enough to beat Joshua, and the idea that he gets anywhere near Fury is just silly. The sooner he gets beaten by someone for a belt maybe he will crawl back into his shell and stop acting like he is some global superstar, when in actual fact he should be thanking his lucky stars that his promoter had links to Sky Box Office to earn him millions, far more than his talent deserved.

Dillian, you didnt become a 'box office star' yourself, you were with the right promoter who could tap into the casual market to lap up shite like Whyte v Chisora as a bloody box office fight.

Here are the facts. Whyte pulled out/turned down an eliminator vs Ortiz and Pulev which would have made him mandatory. He also turned down a voluntary world title fight vs AJ. He only has himself to blame for all of this.

Only way they can get out of the lawsuit but still cash in on a potential Fury/Joshua fight.

However, last week WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury revealed that he’s agreed financial terms to face Anthony Joshua twice next year instead.

Sulaiman told Pro Boxing Fans: “He’s right now with lawyers against the WBC.

“I’m not certain what it is about, we did not create the pandemic.

“We did not enforce any delays on anything, I don’t know what it is all about.

“All I know is the WBC’s position is very clear and it’s public and it’s been consistent.

“So I have no idea what Dillian and his management and his promotion wishes to accomplish or do.

“We are clear and we stand strong with our position.”

Regarding the Fury vs Joshua talk, Sulaiman added: “I have seen the comments and it’s obvious.

“Fury has the fight with Wilder and then he mentioned Joshua next year, so that’s completely open.

“The WBC’s position is very clear, we have our champion Fury, he has that commitment to Wilder.

“And then we have the mandatory title defence as scheduled within our rules.

“It’s public. I have continuously stated that Dillian Whyte is the ‘interim’ champion, mandatory challenger. And that the date is February 2021.

“Given all these situations – the situation of the pandemic – we will address every single division with the specifics of each one.

“I’m tired of saying it. Dillian Whyte is the ‘interim’ champion and mandatory contender.”

Evidently, something has to give, and it will be seemingly decided when the WBC address the heavyweight division in due course.
