Foreman faced Chepulis at only 19 and with only 20 (16-4) fights going into the Olympics. I think that's pretty amazing.

Ionas Chepulis had a am record of 203-17.

Ya, in those days there was no international qualifying process, so you just had to make your national team and that was enough, could do it in fewer fights. These days he would be put through an international circuit of events before fighting in the Olympics and would probably have been even better.
He was just a natural brute

Makhmudov reminds me of him. I know I've said it before, but he really does.

In all honesty, Foreman probably could have beaten prime Teofilo Stevenson.

Ionas Chepulis had a am record of 203-17.
For a guy with that record he looked pretty basic.
I realise the amateurs would have been quite different then.

It must've been a weak era for USSR HW's. I agree he didn't look impressive. I'll have to see if any other 1968 Olympic fights are available to see the other fighters Big George thrashed. Even Foreman's baby pics are menacing!

Of course no one knows, but I saw Teofilo fight a few times in tourny's and Olympics and he was a huge powerful and polisehd fighter. I wouldn't bet on it that 1968 George would've beaten him.

Dieter Renz beat George by DQ..I seem to remember Clay Hodges beating him 3 times but can't remember off hat.
He also lost to Max Briggs, P.T Thomson...so I make that 6

Can't find anything of his record other than 22-4 pre pro.
EDIT: Twice to Hodges; once to Briggs (his very first fight); struggling to find number four.

Ok, after some research:
Foreman lost his first fight ever to Briggs. And reports say he lost badly.
He lost twice to Hodges but hurt him early in both fights, just couldn't finish him and lost the decisions.
He lost a fight in Milwaukee while trying to win National Golden Gloves in 1967 to an unnamed opponent.

I thought the fight in Milwaukee in 67 was against Clay Hodges??
His first fight against P.T Thomson was a loss also but I cant remember if this was contested or a 'walkover' .. . its been years since Ive looked at my research on George. He lost on a foul in Germany also I remember. .

Strange how difficult such an icon's am record seems to be, especially since he only had some 26 fights.

3 x hodges
1 x p.T Thompson (debut)
1 x Briggs
1 x Heinz Dieter Renz
Feel free to correct if I am incorrect

I only came up with a few sources for what I had posted but they were all the same. First fight loss to Briggs. 2x's loss to hodges and the GG loss in '67 but no name. 22-4. Saw nothing different.

Pretty much all am records of notable pros are hard to verify, a lot of times one figure just gets thrown out there and run with. Like Curry famously being like 400-4 even though even just a small sample of his results had like 9 losses down or something
Am records are so easy to fabricate when it's so hard to verify
Whatever GF's record, it seems by all accounts it didn't look too special just on wins and losses compared to other top pros
