Just watched Eubank Collins 1 and Mason was a pundit at the end. I ended up spending most of the night watching his fights and some old interviews. He was quite well spoken and a very good pundit. I never see him mentioned in terms of punditry but he was quite decent.

As a fighter he was solid but lacked footspeed which let him down. He lacked size too as we saw in the Lennox fight. He was the kind of guy who wanted to see how good he was and if he wasn't good enough he was just going to call it a day and that's basically what happened.

Shame that he died in the road accident. I actually did some reading up on that and the actual road where it happened looks dangerous

Yes, that was probably the main reason.

He's a little bit under appreciated is Mason.

He was a solid fighter, pretty tough, decent handspeed, but slow of foot as alluded to by the OP.

His fight with Lewis was decent enough and I thought that was Lewis's most underrated win, as he was still learning and Mason was much more experienced.

Mason was scheduled to fight Mike Tyson for the title in early '91, but Tyson's loss to Douglas put paid to that.

I think he's very well appreciated, people are generally quite favourable of him whenever he's brought up. Tbf for all his wins there wasnt a hell of a lot of substance to his record. 2 Brit title fights, never pushed on to EBU, lost to an upcoming world class operator then retired right after. Seems like there was plenty of room for him to have had a more interesting career

I think he lived in the shadow of Bruno and didn't get the chances because of that.

I think you're right, the Bruno factor is definitely a cause.

Might have been an interesting fight between those two.

I would pick Big Frank due to his experience, but Mason was probably good enough to make Bruno work for his money.

he was a great pundit. can remember him doing hide v vitali. he said something like...we all knew herbie could punch but we didnt know if he could take a punch, and now we know. it was the way he said it with a smile on his face, loved it.

Enjoyed that video of Mason's win over Donnie Long. Lively in the short time it lasted.

Good fighter with a hard dig. Fair play to him for taking on Lewis, because no one was ever going to beat Lennox outside of a world title fight.

Terry Lawless had three fine heavies in his stable when you include Horace Notice, who had to retire (unbeaten) with eye trouble like Mason. Ironically, Bruno had eye problems at the start of his career, making his way to Bogota in Colombia for an operation but I often wonder if that was just a ruse as Lawless and Burt McCarthy squabbled in the courts over which one of them had actually signed up Bruno. Big Frank later required another eye operation at the age of 30.

I recall the guy rumours, although now we prefer to call them homosexuals as its less of a negative label, in much the same way as we should say people kind instead of mankind as its more inclusive.

Always loved Mason...he used to own a Jewellery store in Gillingham. Always smiling and always amiable. He never overly impressed and came up short against Lennox. I always loved his knockout of Lorenzo Boyd. Lifted him off the ground.

Gary had a detached retina and had 2 fights in the USA before calling it a day.

He was a very good pundit on Sky Sports boxing in the early days with Gary Norman.

Mason was sacked from his role though when he was overheard at the end of a show after leaving his mic on. He apparantly said to a stage hand: "Hey jeeves, take my fornicating tie off and make me a cup of tea"!
