When were smelling salts made illegal in the U.K.?

I'm sorry to bring up the subject of Ali vs Cooper...it's not to do with the delay, but whether Angelo Dundee acted illegally in administering smelling salts on Ali midway between rounds four and five.
I have read countless forums and opinions and they all seem to be unfounded. Does anybody have definitive information on whether they were illegal at that time and when the rules changed?

Great question ! I wish I knew. In 1980, Angelo Dundee and Ray Arcel requested-and received-permission to administer smelling salts during the first Leonard-Duran bout. Also, in 1982, Arcel administered smelling salts to Larry Holmes in the Cooney bout-they were not legal at that time in Nevada.

I have read somewhere that in the UK it was the late 1950s ....but a lot of differing opinions ...

I think it was shortly after the war the use of stimulants were prohibited, circa 1950.

Lol not sure if you bring a bit sarcastic. But from what I can find it was banned in the late 1950s...so it was illegal....but because it was Dundee I have to forgive him :box:

Looks like I was pretty close. This clipping is from The Western Mail dated 19 December 1950, see the last paragraph about the use of stimulants.

Good find!

Just to play the "Devils advocate":
The clipping just calls it a recommendation, was it ever enforced.
Was smelling salts considered as a stimulant.

I noticed that too...it doesn't say banned. But I do think its giving us a clearer timeline...the 1950's...but well done Bladder!
