"Gilberto Ramirez a Free Agent, Amicably Spilts With Top Rank"

BS.com has been advised that unbeaten former super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez (40-26) and long time promoter Top Rank Inc. have came to an agreement to officially part ways - making the 29-year-old a promotional free agent. He is managed by David Suh.

“I have decided to move my career in a different direction,” Ramírez stated to BS.

“I would like to thank Bob Arum and all of the Top Rank family for all the support they have given to my career. They always treated me with class. I can’t wait for the next chapter of my career. There are many big fights in my division and I am here to take over.”

Ramírez captured the WBO super middleweight title in 2016 when he shut out long time champion Arthur Abraham on all three scorecards in Las Vegas. He successfully defended his title 5 times including a pair of memorable bouts against nemesis Jesse Hart.

He moved up to 175 pounds in April of last year and blew out Tommy Karpency in four rounds in his most recent ring appearance. Even though he hasn’t fought since since then, he has stayed active in the gym.

When asked for a statement, a spokesman for Top Rank told BS.com, “we have reached an amicable settlement with all parties. We wish Gilberto and his team the best of luck in the future.”

The Mazatlán, Sinaloa, México native is forming his own promotional company, ‘Zurdo Promotions’ to co-promote his future fights and is planning to return to the ring in the near future. He hopes to face the biggest names as soon as possible.

“I want Dmitry Bivol, Jean Pascal, Sergey Kovalev, Chávez Jr. - any big name I am interested in,” Ramírez told BS.com.

Thoughts? :-?

This seems to be a bizarre move by Zurdo because he’s never beaten anyone of any note at 168lbs or 175lbs and he’s left the one promoter that appears to own the majority of the pieces of the proverbial chessboard at light heavyweight (Top Rank).

Ramirez is physically pretty big, and I don’t think at his age he’ll be able to return to 168lbs.

He’s mentioned a potential bout against Matchroom's Dmitry Bivol, but he isn’t ranked by the WBA. However, that should not be a big hurdle to overcome.

The thing is, Michael Hunter has just parted ways with Matchroom and DAZN. And he claims that other fighters have been released too. He would not confirm if this were due to cash problems for the streaming service, but this would seem likely.

So, I would be surprised to see Zurdo join Matchroom/DAZN in order to face Dmitry Bivol. The Mexican doesn’t have a title or a name. And both companies seem to be employing cost-cutting measures at the moment.

He's obviously wanting a canelo fight. Thing is there isn't extra money being a canelo opponent right now.

He's co-promoted by Top Rank and GYM, but I've read somewhere that he's still advised by Al Haymon, similar to Danny Jacobs' situation with DAZN.
