Charlo-Derevyanchenko, Charlo-Rosario On Showtime PPV 9/26

Jermall Charlo and Jermell Charlo will co-headline a Showtime Pay-Per-View broadcast September 26 against two of the toughest opponents in their respective divisions.

Jermall Charlo will defend his WBC middleweight title versus Sergiy Derevyanchenko, the number one contender for his 160-pound crown. His twin brother, Jermell Charlo, will face Jeison Rosario in a 154-pound title unification fight as part of the same six-fight pay-per-view show from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Showtime announced the Charlo doubleheader Wednesday morning, along with seven other live events it will air either on that premium cable network or on pay-per-view. Each of those cards, starting August 1 and ending December 12, will take place at Mohegan Sun Arena, without fans in attendance due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Charlo-Derevyanchenko and Charlo-Rosario fights are called the “first main event” and “second main event,” respectively, in Showtime’s official press release. The order of their fights aside, the polarizing Charlo twins will test their boxing abilities against imposing opponents, as well as their drawing power by co-headlining on pay-per-view for the first time.

Charlo-Derevyanchenko and Charlo-Rosario will be packaged with four more fights, most notably an intriguing WBC super bantamweight elimination bout between Daniel Roman (27-3-1, 10 KOs) and Emmanuel Rodriguez (19-1, 12 KOs).

The Charlos’ undercard also will feature Mario Barrios (25-0, 16 KOs), who will defend the WBA world 140-pound championship against Ryan Karl (18-2, 12 KOs), and Brandon Figueroa (20-0-1, 15 KOs), who’ll defend the WBA world super bantamweight championship versus Damien Vazquez (15-1-1, 8 KOs). The September 26 show will include an IBF lightweight elimination match that’ll pit Diego Magdaleno (32-3, 13 KOs) against Isaac Cruz (19-1-1, 14 KOs) as well.

Jermall Charlo (30-0, 22 KOs) opted against waiting for the WBC to order him to fight Derevyanchenko. Ukraine’s Derevyanchenko (13-2, 10 KOs) is the number one contender for Charlo’s championship, but the WBC has not yet declared him the Houston native’s mandatory challenger.

The 34-year-old Derevyanchenko (13-2, 10 KOs) chose challenging Charlo over a lucrative offer to fight Canelo Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) on September 12. The middleweight contender would’ve had to move up from 160 pounds to 168 for that 12-round super middleweight match against the Mexican icon.

Derevyanchenko represents the toughest test, at least on paper, for the 30-year-old Charlo since the former IBF junior middleweight champ began competing in the middleweight division in July 2017.

Detractors have criticized Charlo (30-0, 22 KOs) for fighting huge underdogs Jorge Sebastian Heiland, Hugo Centeno Jr., Brandon Adams and Dennis Hogan in four of his five middleweight matches. England’s Chris Eubank Jr. (29-2, 22 KOs) was long considered the front-runner to become Charlo’s next opponent prior to Charlo-Derevyanchenko discussions becoming serious last month.

A heavily favored Charlo stopped Ireland’s Hogan (28-3-1, 7 KOs) in the seventh round of his last fight, December 7 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Challenging Charlo will afford Derevyanchenko his third crack at winning a middleweight title in his past four fights. Derevyanchenko has lost two fights for the vacant IBF 160-pound crown to Daniel Jacobs and Gennadiy Golovkin since October 2018.

In his last appearance, Derevyanchenko gave Golovkin (40-1-1, 35 KOs) one of the most difficult fights of his career October 5 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Kazakhstan’s Golovkin defeated Derevyanchenko on all three cards (115-112, 115-112, 114-113), but their brutal battle was extremely competitive and was named “Fight of the Year” for 2019 by Boxing Scene.

Saw this will be on ppv which i expected. How much would you be willing to pay for this card??

I figured thats what they would so... but given current economics im guessing that is a huge flop.

$40 - $50 should be fair...

Unless... Who knows, they'll see what it's like around that time..

50 is a psychological barrier. If they keep it in the 40 range it will do ok

I will be definitely rooting for Derevyanchenko, he is one of my favorites. But Charlo is beast, some accurate counterpunching with savage power. He will be favorite probably. Anyway, i am going in this with Sergey

Jermall and Jermell are not PPV stars in my eyes..

They did do around 2m views when they co-headlined a FOX card back in December 2018, but I hear they do have a decent fan base.. who knows..

This card however is a PPV worthy card.. but as has been said. Not a $70 card..

jermall i think is getting better every fight, think he could stop sergiy, if sergiy comes at charlo,i think dangours as charlo has good range of punches, i think sergiy should fight the long game as i think charlo weakness is taking his mind of the fight

Jermall could win this fight clearly. He's younger, has no loss on his record, taller. Chenko will be almost 35 y/o and he had two tough fights against Jacobs and GGG. Also he's the shorter fighter.

Charlo-Derevyanchenko Before Charlo-Rosario 9/26; Six-Fight Show Starts At 7 ET

Jermell Charlo fought first the last time he and his twin brother boxed on the same night.

It’s Jermall Charlo’s turn this time.

Showtime and Premier Boxing Champions announced during Showtime’s tripleheader Saturday night that Jermall Charlo’s middleweight title fight against Sergiy Derevyanchenko will take place before Jermell Charlo faces Jeison Rosario later the night of September 26 as part of the same pay-per-view show.

Showtime will offer six fights altogether September 26 for one pay-per-view price.

The three-match segment headlined by Jermall Charlo (30-0, 22 KOs), the WBC middleweight champion, and Derevyanchenko (13-2, 10 KOs) is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. After an intermission that’ll last an undetermined amount of time, another three-bout portion of the program will begin, concluding with Charlo-Rosario (see schedule below).

Jermell Charlo (33-1, 17 KOs) and the Dominican Republic’s Rosario (20-1-1, 14 KOs) will fight for Charlo’s WBC super welterweight title and Rosario’s IBF, IBO and WBA 154-pound titles in their championship unification fight.

The September 26 show will take place at a site to be determined. The Charlo-Derevyanchenko/Charlo-Rosario show was expected to take place at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, but it could be held elsewhere even if fans cannot attend.

The last time the Charlo twins fought on the same card, Jermell Charlo lost a coin flip and boxed before his brother.

Jermell Charlo suffered his only loss that night – a 12-round, unanimous-decision defeat to Tony Harrison (28-3, 21 KOs) in December 2018 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Jermall Charlo beat Russia’s Matt Korobov (28-3-1, 14 KOs) by unanimous decision in the 12-round main event that night.

FOX televised that card. Jermell Charlo regained his WBC title in another FOX main event almost exactly one year later, when he knocked out Detroit’s Harrison in the 11th round last December 21 at Toyota Arena in Ontario, California.

Unbeaten WBC middleweight world champion Jermall Charlo and top 160-pound contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko spoke to the press during a kick-off virtual press conference Monday as they preview the main event of part one of the first-of-its-kind Showtime PPV doubleheader on Saturday, September 26 in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

JERMALL CHARLO:

“It’s going to be fireworks and an explosive night of boxing. I can’t wait. Everyone is calling this a test and a big step up, so I’m training hard and preparing well.

“He lost both of those fights against Gennadiy Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs. Competitive or not, that’s what happened. He’s a warrior though and I want him to be sharp so he can give me the best he can give me. This is going to be a real fight, just know that.

“I’m going to be super sharp. That’s the message I want to deliver to all of the other middleweights out there.

“I thought I might need to out-perform Jacobs and Golovkin, but as long as I continue to be myself, I will get the victory and I’ll have my hand raised. I’m smart, stronger and better than I used to be. Every fight is a different fight. I let my trainer do the studying and I’m just focused on what I have to do.

“He’s coming straight to me and fighting. That’s what I expect. You want me to go toe-to-toe? That’s what I expect to do.

“Everybody is doubting me. I’ve been doubted for years. It’s not anger. I don’t care what my opponent or his trainer says about me. I’m a fighter and I’m ready for this. I really want to just get in there and fight.

“After this fight, people are going to say that I’m a great fighter. I’m the best in the world. I know Sergiy feels that way too. So we get to clash in the ring. I’m expecting a fight. I haven’t left the gym since February. I’ve been locked in. I wanted this opportunity to get in there and be me.

“If it goes the distance, I’m prepared for the distance. If he can’t take the power, then I’m going to finish him off.

“My training is progressing. I’ve been in the gym working out, keeping fit, eating healthy and doing everything that I’m supposed to do. I’m anxiously waiting for September 26. You can expect the same type of fight from me that you saw against Golovkin.

“I’ve had the experience of fighting at this level against the likes of Jacobs and Golovkin, which gave me the confidence and experience of fighting at the highest level. I have supreme, utmost confidence in myself.

“Charlo thinks he’s the best in the world and I believe I’m the best in the world. I think I’m the better fighter. The great thing is that we’re actually going to get a chance to settle it and we’ll see who the best in the world really is.

“I’m just focused on my opponent and what I have to do on September 26. The goal is to go in there and take the belt from him and bring it home.

“What I’ve said before is that I have a lot of experience and that might be an issue for Charlo. I never said it would be too much for him, but we will find out on fight night.

“I need to just stick with my game plan. We have a plan in place. I’m going to do what I have to do. If there’s a chance to knock him out, I will knock him out. If it goes 12 rounds, I’ll do the best that I can and show the judges that I am the winner.

Hard for me to pick a winner, but if I did I would say Charlo by narrow decision. Props to both guys for what will be a great fight.

I think $75 is pushing is.

It’s a very good card on paper, but I think given the current circumstances.. maybe $55 would have been better. Or $50.

The price is ludicrous. None of these fights is a proper PPV main event. They could have just split this up into 2 cards to put on Fox/Showtime. PBC must be desperate for cash putting this on PPV.

cant help but think This will struggle. Weak card for PPV, especialy at 75 bucks when the entire USA is kinda broke.. Also clashes with a pretty decent UFC PPV (luckily main event isnt americans).
Only upside is at 75 bucks, it probably only needs about 50,000 buys to pay everyone purses...

Also based on Adesanya’s last fight.. might not do well.. although Costa is a difference type of fighter.

More evidence that boxing needs to wake up and realise that the world has changed. There's been some strong evidence recently that the message is still not sinking in.

Post Covid 19 it's living in dreamland charging $75 for this.

For that kind of money they will now need to put on Wilder v AJ, GGG v Alvarez and Inoue v Casimero - all on the same bill.
