Andy Ruiz Jr is starting to look really trim and slimmed down with all the work that he’s been putting in over the last three months. The former IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Ruiz Jr (33-2, 22 KOs) posted a short workout clip of him on social media this past week, and he looks like he could down to the 240s now.

Andy Jr could be battling Chris Arreola next

Ruiz, 31, could be facing former three-time world title challenger Chris Arreola in his next fight in September or October. The two were said recently to be in discussions for a fight. A win over Arreola should give Ruiz a boost up the rankings. If Andy can win two or three matches against contenders, he could get a rematch with Anthony Joshua.

Losing weight is essential for Ruiz because he was way too heavy for his rematch with Joshua last December, and he gave away his titles. While some boxing fans believe Joshua’s win was because of the movement he used, you have to look at Ruiz’s weight as the crucial factor for why he lost.



If Ruiz continued to put in the same hard work he’s been doing for the last three months; he may end up weighing in the 230s. We won’t know that’s too light for Ruiz or not until he gets inside the ring with one of the top heavyweights. But looking at Ruiz’s physique now, he’s heading in that direction.

Could Ruiz Jr have beaten Joshua if he’d been lighter?

The million-dollar question is whether Ruiz could have changed the outcome of his second fight with Joshua had he come into it 30 to 40 pounds lighter at 240 or 250? Joshua’s movement wasn’t to the extent that Ruiz couldn’t have gotten to him had he been a lot lighter.

It looked to some like Ruiz was too heavy to cut off the ring on Joshua. Ruiz did get to Joshua repeatedly during the fight, but he lacked the stamina needed to let his hands go.

It would be strange if Ruiz trimmed down to the level that Chris Arreola is at, and it made him an entirely different fighter.

He can cut down to cruiserweight if he want. 220-230 is ideal weight for him

he may never win the title again,the title holders don't fight often enough for him to get the chance,Joshua and fury have the next couple of years already planned out and he doesn't appear in those plans

The same threads were popping up heading into the rematch. Losing fat is good for his health, it won't change the fact that he's a poor boxer.

I don’t know if it’ll make him a better fighter though, because he’s already achieved his personal goals and earned a lot of money.

Andy will inevitably receive another big payday for his next outing, but his purses will gradually decline in size as time passes by.

And he needs to score an impressive win over an opponent with a big name to earn another shot at the title, which I’m not sure he can do if his desire has diminished due to his recent success.

Even if he does defy my expectations and returns to the form he showed against AJ in their first bout, as others have already mentioned in this thread, the earliest he’ll be granted another opportunity to challenge for the world title will be 2022… and a lot can happen in two years.

Outside of the champions, there are still plenty of boxers I'd like to see Ruiz fight, a lot of good fights to be made as well.

Wouldn't mind a Parker rematch.

A fight with Whyte would be a PPV in the UK , making them some decent money as well.

An all US fight against Wilder would be interesting.

Most of them are likely crossroads fights, but as you said, if Ruiz can keep winning, just like Whyte has been doing all these years, the fights come and the paydays stay..

Not sure losing weight will improve his game too much as even at his fattest he could throw quick combos and go twelve rounds easy enough.

But it is a good sign that he still has a bit of hunger (away from the buffet table).
The fact he is taking his boxing career seriously isn't a bad thing at all.

Does he have a fight scheduled yet?

I imagine either Ortiz or Kownacki will be up next for him, these are both winnable fight for him and should secure him some good rankings.

If a belt becomes vacant he could find himself in the mix again.

There was a picture of him sometime before the Joshua rematch looking quite trim, but by the time he climbed into the ring for the fight, he weighed more than Brachiosaurus.

Looks like a killer workout, but you can't tell if he's slim wearing what he's wearing.

Well I can still see his gut and side gut protruding, and he looks fully tits and belly when he turns at the end. lol dude had those 'slim new andy' pics and then came about as fat as ever

I think Povetkin's physique is easily attainable for Ruiz.

There is no reason why Ruiz can't get down to 230.
