Bob Arum keeps mentioning big name fighters when being interviewed, in order to keep Crawford’s name in the media spotlight, but the Top Rank chief never delivers.

And I really can’t help wondering whether Gary Russell Jr. is using the same ploy to promote himself, knowing full-well that Top Rank wouldn’t attempt to take him up on his offer, even if Crawford really did want the fight.

It’s a case of “let’s do some name dropping, even though I don’t really want the fight, because being insincere attracts media headlines and bigger audience figures”.

Top Rank does it all the time with PBC fighters... and it's about time a PBC fighter exploited Top Rank in the same way.

It’s wrong of you to accuse Gary Russell Jr. of ducking Leo Santa Cruz. He definitely tried to make that fight numerous times, going so far as to threaten Leo's father.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. It is more of a message statement to show he's not afraid. GR is a good boxer, but needs to stay in his own division, maybe go up one, and be more active against better guys there.
