Muhammad Ali's retirement was a shock to me, his lasts two fights were hard to watch. A sad ending to a great career. Another instance has to be the death of Johnny Owen.

Was just supposed to be an exhibition, but I had a bad feeling..

I wouldn't consider Robinson running out of gas " heartbreaking".. especially following a Johnny Owen clip.

Hearns/Leonard 1, nothing comes close.

Given how things turned out, I think the ending of Taylor-Chavez was heartbreaking.

I remember feeling badly for Hearns in the 2nd Leonard fight. It seemed like he had done enough to get his moment of redemption, but it was not to be.

I felt bad watching Colin Jones weeping in the ring after getting stopped by Donald Curry on a bad cut, nothing controversial, but his disappointment was so apparent.

And you had to feel bad for Eder Gonzalez for losing his fight to the referee after knocking out Juan Coggi in Argentina.

But, obviously, none of these come close to incidents where someone was permanently injured or killed.

Here are some of my ones:

Smokin' Joe unable to go out for the 15th round and the fight being stopped by his corner, despite all Joe's will to fight until the end. Of course, the 15th could be a much worse case, than RTD before it, but still sad.

Tommy Morrison's situation with HIV and mental breakdown because of it, which put him into denial, AIDS and eventually demise.

Holyfield's post-Lewis career, almost entire.

Fury's troubles outside the ring, which caused the hiatus.

Klitschko losing to Joshua. I was super happy, when Fury won Klitschko, but after Fury went to hiatus and Joshua was tracked fast to the championship, scheduled to face Klitschko and become favored against Klitschko, I was a bit irritated by all this stuff and was rooting for Klitschko.

Roberto Duran quitting against Sugar Ray Leonard.

Alexis Arguello on a stretcher after being stopped by Aaron Pryor in round 14th of first fight.

Nothing heartbreaking about the middle one.

Obviously deaths and the severe injuries are the worst. In some of these, we didn't know at the time how bad it was.
What happened to Greg Page was sad. It's even worse when there is even competent medical personnel on hand.

There have been many, many other times when these things have happened; sometimes with lesser fighters.

Benn v McClellan every time for me.....

..a truly epic and unbelievably ferocious fight but with a horrific and life-changing outcome for the G-Man.

All played-out live on UK TV and watched by millions.....boxing at its best and very worst/hideous in one evening.

I also hate and find it heart-breaking watching the old champs who can't let it go due to their pride or finances.

Not "most ever", but some that get me are:

James Shuler being an undefeated highly-rated prospect, then being blown out by Hearns, then using part of his purse to buy a motorcycle, then being killed on it 10 days after the Hearns fight.

In a Sunday afternoon cable-tv bout, watching undefeated Randie Carver get knocked down by opponent Kabary Salem after a rough fight, try valiantly to get up but his legs weren't working, pass out, and learn that he died two days later.
