Whyte vs. Povetkin did around 200k PPV Buys

This was him before the fight, defending the £19.95 price

Hearn hit back at recent criticism of the price by telling Seconds Out: “You’ve got to ask yourself this. Is Whyte/Povetkin in a final eliminator that the winner fights Tyson Fury, and Taylor against Persoon, better than Whyte/Rivas and Dave Allen against David Price. And if you say no, you’re a pillock.

So therefore that fight did great numbers, this fight will do great numbers too. So we have no crowd, we’re losing a load of money on the event if it makes you feel more comfortable. So therefore, this is the way we can make the fight happen. If you don’t wanna buy it, don’t buy it.

“Tell me a pay-per-view card I’ve done that hasn’t given you great value for money. Bellew-Cleverly – when was that? Six years ago? So, you know, my reputation should say it all and we believe once again this is a great show”

----------------------------
Hearn predicted 300k buys

“Dillian Whyte is a good pay-per-view draw. The Parker numbers were massive for Whyte-Parker, over 300,000 buys, and it was the same for Chisora against Whyte,” Hearn said.

“Rivas-Whyte was over 200,000, so I’m really confident, and I think we can do over 300,000 buys here [for Whyte vs. Povetkin]. I would be [happy with those numbers].

“On the one hand, people won’t be as confident as they were three to six months ago, but for a night of boxing when you’re not going out, put the barbeque on, and I think it’ll do really well.

“If you’re moaning about not buying it, but I think you’re going to get great value for money,”
said Hearn on the Whyte-Povetkin contest on Sky Box Office.

BARB keep changing their website.

One says 177k, another says 222k..

So i'm just going in between.

To be fair those are remarkable figures given the quality of the card.

You’ve got to hand it to Matchroom/Sky - their uptake of PPv’s remarkable, especially given that the prices have been hiked up recently.

Whether this will be harmful to the long term future of the sport is a different matter.

You can’t really use Barb as an indicator of PPV buys. Everything I’ve seen/read indicates something like 290k - 310k buys so probably half a million viewers.

I bought it through my Now TV box and watched with my brother - this wouldn’t be included within the Barb numbers.

Could've been worse, povetkin was coming off a dodgy decision against hunter and whyte got a dodgy decision from UKAD.

Hard sell.

I don’t know if I’d go that far. The first few BT shows had awful BARB numbers in comparison with Matchroom.

BT/FW have been shrewd with the last couple though having them directly after a big champions league game and the charity shield this week just gone. Gave them some really big lead in viewers on both.

Yeh, some of the numbers are just not accurate on there. When it comes to ppv. The numbers shown are NOT buys. It’s views. So if someone has watched the replay a few hours later, or the next day (sunday), that figure is added to the numbers.

Announcer Phil Seymour who does a lot of snooker for Matchroom told me Dillian got £4m. I said he was mad and another guy called Luke popped up and said it’s true! I said he was mad as well then got a text off Phil saying this Luke was Barry Hearns right hand man for 25 years.

Whyte must be one of the highest paid contenders ever. Even allowing for inflation he's earned considerably more than some past heavyweight champions!
