He died after a long battle with cancer.

That’s really sad, He put his foot in it and never really got the respect he deserved for his ring exploits - he went over there and did the business - undisputed middleweight champion of the world

I must admit that I never used to like Minter back in the day & was glad when Hagler beat him, but I warmed to him in later years as he was so candid & held his hands up & recognised what he said before their bout was wrong.

Really sad news & condolences to the Minter family.

Absolutely shocked. Heard some pretty scary stories about him over the years, but there's no praise too high for his boxing accomplishments. An Englishman winning the undisputed title -- abroad! Hasn't happened very often.

A statue in Crawley town centre is long overdue and such a shame one wasn't erected when Minter was alive to see it.

In the words of Jim Watt "Alan Minter was one of bravest boxers I've ever seen"

Will be giving the great man's big night in Vegas a rewatch tonight, with a very large bottle of whisky. It's what he would have wanted.

Just watched the BBC 6 o'clock news -- no mention of the passing of a British undisputed world middleweight chammpion. Unbelievable.

I see an interview with him years back where he was asked his proudest moments in boxing.

He said it was when his school teacher called him up in front of the school to congratulate him after his first amateur win, having lost all his first 5.

Then his Olympic bronze medal, both to him far out weighed his undisputed world title win.

At an amateur show, he was signing autographs and entertaining the kids by showing off his speed of punch.

Standing in boxing pose he'd tell them to watch closely for the jab, not to blink else they'd miss it.

He didn't move, resumed a normal stance and started walking away as the kids hollered that he hadn't done anything.

'That's how fast my jab is, so fast you can't see it........' LOL

Condolences to his family and friends. To this day, I maintain that Minter was robbed against Hamsho.

Disagree MW. I think he is/was well respected for what he accomplished in his career by most fans of the sport. A few too many after dinner speeches and appearances when plastered didn't help his post boxing life. A genuine bona fide World Champ.

RIP ,, Great boxer ,, heard he could be hard work but never the less a great boxer , when it was'nt easy to be a great boxer and the title really meant something , RIP Alan Minter and condolesces to his freinds and familly
