UK’s first drive-in boxing show announced for November in car park

Promoter Dennis Hobson has announced he will be staging a drive-in boxing fight night on November 20 in Sheffield.

Tommy Frank and Kyle Yousaf will compete for the vacant British flyweight title in the car park outside Sheffield Arena.

Due to current coronavirus restrictions, crowds are still not properly allowed back to attend sporting events.

This has hit the boxing world hard, especially on the small hall circuit.

However, Hobson’s drive-in plan appears to be a solution to this temporary problem.

A similar event took place in Germany back in July and went off without a hitch.

Hobson said: “I’ve been involved in boxing at all levels, and have staged shows from Rotherham to Las Vegas, but I think we could well be making history with this one.

“Obviously this pandemic has seriously affected everybody’s lives, and it’s been a very difficult time.

“The sports world has been massively hit, and that includes boxing, with a few shows going ahead with no audience and lots of restrictions.

“I’ve been looking at different ways to get my fighters back to work, and when the drive-in idea was suggested I thought it was workable.

“The fighters get back to boxing, fans can come along and watch the show live, and Eurosport will have a smashing card to broadcast.

“This fight between Tommy and Yousaf is going to be terrific.

“They’re all-action, both are unbeaten, it’s for the prestigious British title, and both lads are from Sheffield, so it has that extra spice. Neither of these kids are going to want to lose this one.

“Whoever comes out on top will obviously go onto bigger things, but the loser can definitely come again too.”

Frank added: “All I’m visualizing is the Lord Lonsdale belt.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted since turning pro, and I’m very thankful to Dennis [Hobson] and Steve [Crump] for the opportunity.

“Just to be boxing in 2020 is great, I’m a lucky man and very excited.”

Yousaf concluded: “Winning the British Title has always been one of my dreams, to be the best of British would mean so much to me.

“Of course, my ambition is to become world champion, but I’m not looking ahead or past this British title fight.

Nice idea. Question is how many people they can get in with a half-decent view!

Why don't they have one on an anchored platform in the middle of the water, you could have people in canoes rowing towards it and watching from their canoe seat, other expensive ones could be on yachts etc Weather permitting of course :TU:

It’ll be pissing down in Sheffield in November, hopefully everyone’s windscreen wipers are in good working order  If I lived near this, I’d probably go for the novelty. Hope they do well from it.

Very strange move when at the end of November indoor audiences will be allowed at some level , surely you'll get more indoors than cars in a car park & if the weather is crap it could be a financial disaster . A combined purse for a British title fight will be 20k , who's bank rolling it ?

Plus you can jump in the back with the missus if there is a big gap between fights.
