I was only about 9 year old when he retired but looks like he had a shitload of fights. Would have loved to seen him fight. Probably not much footage around either which is a shame.

Sparrow had a head that looked like it had been in 155 bouts. He was an entertaining walk up, swinging wildly style of fighter, and took a lot of punishment at times, but never gave up.

I saw him a number of times in the prelims at Manly-Warringah Leagues Club in the early 1980s and like his moniker "Sparrow", he liked to chirp his opponents and heckle back spectators.

One night at the Club, Sparrow was both verballing the ref, his opponent and spectators were yelling out derisive comments at Sparrow. Some wag in the crowd went to the Club's front desk for a special announcement to be made over the auditorium's intercom system while Sparrow was fighting. Over it came:

"Could Mr. Sparrow Freeman please report to the front desk, your taxi is waiting for you".

The crowd erupted in loud laughter, and Sparrow stopping fighting, ran over to the ropes and screamed back:

"pi$$ off you b@stards - you can all go and get fvcked!"

Those were the days, when men were men and a pansy was a flower.

Sparrow boxed two of my boxers. Reg King stopped
Sparrow but Wayne Wallace was held to a draw. Wallace had a win over Big Jim West. I was in Melbourne when Tony Russell stopped Sparrow on undercard of BARRY Michael v Frank Ropis. Sparrow trainer Bernie Hall abuser Sparrow in the dressing room for being on the nest

Bimbo Morris was good enough to have wins over Sparrow Freeman. Bimbo lost to old mate of mine
Buddy Clare who passed away many years ago

Anyone know what became of Kid Preston (Adrian Coombes)? He was around Sparrow's time

I had Lou Williams who boxed Kid Preston at the
Westside hotel in Laverton in 1983. Preston beat Williams. Dave Russell made his debut that night against Sydney heavyweight Leo Moore. I remember most of the fans in the audience had shaven heads the same as Dave. Two of Kid Preston best fights were ten round draws against Andy Broome and Rocky Pirrotina in 1981
