Boxers S+C

I follow lots of boxers on Instagram and most of them seem to be putting a lot of time into strength and conditioning. There seems to be to much emphasis on that rather than learning the sweet science. Some fighters today look the part but seem to lack massively in the skill department. Why so much emphasis on new training fads than actually trying to perfect their craft? I don’t get it

Ya, today a huge focus on being 'big and strong'

I wouldn't call strength and conditioning a "fad", although there are certainly a lot of poor strength and conditioning coaches out there using faddish methodology on their athletes.

There is also a life outside instagram...and I don't mean that as a personal attack on you! Just that a lot of instagram content is posted to attract views and likely not a great representation of overall lifestyle/routine. Strength and conditioning work is much more viewer friendly then technique work, for example.

In my opinion, and obviously this is just one perspective, but learning the sweet science is best done on the job. In the past fighters fought for a living. Today they perform for a massive payday once or twice a year. Obviously those starting out are not in that position, but that position is their end goal/dream. I think a lot of the lack of skill seen has less to do with strength and conditioning being the dominant part of their training, and more to do with the fact that they're probably not fighting enough to learn for real.

Thanks
For the detailed response punchout. I understand Instagram doesn’t show the full story. I’d much rather see boxers performing boxing drills on their videos but I can understand that wouldn’t appeal to everyone.
I get your point about fighters not fighting as much but that should mean they are spending more time perfecting the skills required in a boxing gym. It’s all well and good looking body beautiful and setting PBs on the track but if you can’t fight it means nothing.

I agree 100%. The craft is slowly being whittled away in my opinion, and being “athletic” does seem to be more important than being fundamentally sound these days. Sadly, like trash talk, it’s part of the modern sport and likely needed to bring in views.

Modern boxers are probably on average stronger than ever, certainly the most cut and defined ever, but they also seem to be the most lacking ever in terms of ringcraft.

In terms of the weight room I’d agree they are stronger on average, and I’d also agree that ringcraft is worse on average.

Modern boxing (especially at heavyweight) has also produced some of the worst physiques I’ve seen among pro athletes that don’t *need* to be overweight. It’s hard to find more than a handful of HWs who don’t look like they’re about to go in for a diabetes check and it didn’t used to be that way.

They also have pisspoor stamina compared to historical fighters. Always hilarious to see these ‘modern Adonis’ get gassed after 4 rounds.

And that’s probably with PEDs too!

Yeah when you watch say Liston/Machen go at it at a pace for 12 rounds with really high quality punching you can see that it would not be beneficial to be lugging 250lbs about. Sadly I don't think we're ever going back to fit, toned heavies.

Fury and Ruiz do 12 easily. Neither look like they over do the S & C.

This is true, and another major problem with some S & C coaches. I’ve even seen some go so far as to not recommend road work since it’s not an anaerobic exercise.

Athletes today are training more and more for the short burst, but boxing isn’t a short burst sport. Boxing is a beautiful mix of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning and too much today I think one side is left behind.

Sprints and interval training can and should be a great part of a boxers training...but it should not be the only part. Shredding body fat through running HIIT intervals makes you look in great shape and be in great shape for shorter bursts...but it does not mean you can go 12 rounds at a good pace.
