Sad to read a tweet from Lloyd's close friend, Maxi Priest - Lloyd is in intensive care in a UK hospital - no further details of the illness & current condition are given.

Lloyd won the WBC, WBA, IBF World Welterweight titles in Sept 1986 - the day I got married.

Fingers crossed he pulls thru' and makes a full recovery.

I know he put a ton of weight on and had a heart attack a few years back.

People were giving big plaudits recently over Minter outpointing Antufermo in the states, but Lloyd f@cking bashed apart a guy who was like world #1 p4p or close to it at the time, and he also had other really nice performances and wins as a genuine champ. I started a thread about him being underappreciated, some disagreed but I really think he a lot underestimate the level he was at and what he achieved, he is a british great for sure

even before winning world titles, for the ebu belt he smashed up gio rossi, who would end up being a multi time world champ himself (perhaps most famously coming to the us to school a 40-0 jeff van horn )

to me he is a guy who certainly has a case for the hall of fame (currey got in), though it wont happen

Hugely respected in the trade, after the Curry win of course, One of the greatest upsets of all time...The starling fight was unfortunate because the magic man’s style was always going to be all wrong for Lloyd, the guy was virtually impossible to hit, and Lloyd was very free swinging by those days, used to blowing people away ...

Again Lloyds face didn’t fit in the UK, like Minter, and he was never given the plaudits he was due. A prickly character who spoke his mind, and as soon as he won the title the red tops were immediately on him, Interviewing ex girlfriends, basically putting the boot in wherever possible.

Watched a fair bit of Honeyghan recently, id seen the Curry fight but caught up with the Mittee and Bumphus wins as well, he was a hard hitter, Starling proved too good and by time he fought Breland he was shot to bits, no punch resistance

Horrible news. Lloyd was the best welterweight in the world for a couple of heady years and shook up the world against the unbeaten Don Curry. He will fight all the way.

Get well soon champ. Read his wiki as it was before my time but he was truly a trendsetter.

Become only the second brit to regain a world title which is normal now but no mean feat back then.

Always felt Lloyd was a bit underappreciated. He was much more than just the curry win. Hope he pulls thru.

I suspect Lloyds career was cut short by his hard partying lifestyle, definitely one of the biggest wins ever by a Brit abroad, though from what I've read, Curry himself was an accident waiting to happen, as he'd turned into a huge cokehead himself by that stage. Taking nothing away from the win though, he absolutely annihilated Curry, was on him from the first bell.

Still one of my favourite ever boxing quotes ever when questioned about hitting Bumphus as he was still rising from his stool.

"The bell went ding, and I went dong."

I think it was just a short prime, he still beat some very good boxers

He was a fairly well known party animal. I'm sure he trained hard.

Yeah I saw him at a fight one night in similar getup, but with a white brimmed hat.

I don't think Honeyghan's underrated really. He beat a man with a big reputation, but he didn't beat a great fighter. Curry was a very good boxer with a string of very good wins, but he was always on top. The first time he was buzzed and dragged into a tough fight he quit, and he got KOd in every big fight after that. Is that a great fighter? Leonard got rocked by a huge right in the second round versus Duran, and got sucked into a nightmare, but can you imagine him walking back to his stool after six rounds, shaking his head and retiring? Curry should have fought Honeyghan tooth and nail to the bitter end but he didn't have it in him.

So Curry's record doesn't really stand up and Honeyghan didn't last that long either, which probably doesn't help matters.

An excellent win that very rarely gets a mention was over Maurice Blocker. He gave Lloyd a really tough fight but Honeyghan dug in and came away with a points win.

I was fortunate to get an invite to the Boxing Writers Dinner at the Savoy a few weeks before Xmas a few years ago.

Ricky Hatton, the guest speaker said ' I came through reception earlier and said to my driver, xxxxxx hell they get the Christmas tree up early down these parts'

'That's not a Christmas Tree' he said 'That's Lloyd Honeyghan'

Often to be seen standing at the back of the York Hall supporting the amateurs.

Lloyd Honeyghan was a total legend in the mid-late 80s, after Marvin Hagler definitely the fighter that got me into boxing. Get well soon champ
