Bingham was in no position to continue, the ref stopped the fight, Bingham didn't take any extra shots, a strange ending but the ref got it right.

Lovely right hand. It was a slightly strange scenario but agree ref should have stopped it. I used to love watching Wally Swift Jr on tv. Shame he never won a Lonsdale Belt ourtright.

Swift had previously lost to Bingham in a 10-rounder in which he finished badly marked up so it was quite a surprise when he took out Bingham in the rematch. He emulated his father in winning the British title.

Wasn't Swift Jnr a Maths genius and turned down an opportunity to become an accountant to turn pro or something like that? Bright and engaging chap. Tough as old boots too.

That Mercer v Morrison ending still makes me shudder Rarely will you see a more stricken boxer than Morrison after Mercer landed punch after punch with the referee seemingly gone missing !

Jesus, that referee in the women's fight should never be allowed near a boxing ring again....ever! Absolutely shocking

Wally is a very shrewd man who boxed for the money just as his late father did. Wally senior worked at the Raleigh Bicycle Company in Nottingham all through his career and saved his ring earnings. At the end of his boxing career he started his own bookmaking business and made a fortune. He moved out of Nottingham and bought a huge house in Solihull but he was still the same old Wally Swift. Steve Holdsworth got lippy with him once and Wally rushed him, drew his head back and said, "Do you want, do you want it!" Steve got out of there.

I would never have guessed Wally senior had a temper on him ! As a youngster I asked him to sign a boxing program at a show and he said very modestly "what do you want my autograph for ?"

No idea what went on in that incident, but Steve Holdsworth was a good amateur himself (who also turned pro).

Wally was the nicest bloke in the world but Holdsworth made derogatory comments about that state of his son's face after the first Bingham fight and Wally senior wouldn't back down from a challenge. I remember after Nigel Benn dogged it against Michael Watson in 1989, turning away and falling to the floor at the finish, Wally cracked, "I wouldn't have turned away if he'd hit me with a hammer."

The worst officiating I think I ever saw, was Jack Reiss, it was I think for a mexican title fight, I'll have to try and find the fight.

One fighter got decked really heavily, and clearly hadn't recovered when he made it to his feet, and should have been stopped then and there, Reiss however allowed the round to continue, and the guy was punched from pillar to post.

He somehow survived the round, and came out glassy eyed for the next round, clearly not really totally aware of his surroundings, and then took about another half a round of punishment, I think he was decked twice more, and then Reiss jumped in dramatically, as if he was jumping to his rescue.

How Reiss wasn't dismissed instantaneously is beyond me, he could easily have gotten the man killed.

I'll have to find the fight, it's truly shocking how much punishment he allows a totally defenceless man to take.
