Former world flyweight champion Dave McAuley, sadly, is showing his true colours in the wake of Barry McGuigan and Harry Mullan's induction into the IBHoF this year.
And they ain't pretty!
McAuley said in today's Belfast telegraph it is "a disgrace" Northern Ireland promoter Barney Eastwood has been ignored alongside McGuigan and Harry Mullan, also from Northern Ireland of course.
Eastwood steered McGuigan to the WBA featherweight title in the 80's before the two had a bitter bust-up over, inevitably, money. They have never been reconciled and McGuigan went on to slate Eastwood in a book written by Mullan (along with Gerry Callan).
McAuley knows all this. And he knows mentioning Barney Eastwood in the same breath as McGuigan and Mullan will cut deeply into McGuigan and his family, and Mullan's family, and take away the joy of their induction.
Eastwood successfully sued McGuigan over comments made in the above-mentioned book, winning a huge payout when McGuigan refused to settle and fought it out. "Justice at last," screamed Barney's pathetic little brother, Stephen Eastwood, when the £650,000 libel award was handed out by the judge.
Eastwood then sued Boxing News when punchy old Reg Gutteridge missed the word "alleged" on a story concerning Eastwood and McGuigan, and copped 30 grand. Mullan was editor at the time.
"I'm not saying that Barry McGuigan and Harry Mullan should not be put in the Hall of Fame," stressed McAuley today. "But surely when you think about Irish boxing you have to nominate Barney Eastwood."
Fair enough, but then McAuley really goes to town, claiming other British and Irish fighters should have been inducted before McGuigan, and it all starts to get as personal as his remarks over Eastwood.
This has nothing really to do with Johnny Caldwell or Lloyd Honeyghan or Rinty Monaghan or Nigel Benn (the other fighters). Or even Eastwood, you know.
This has to do with McAuley himself.
McAuley won the IBF flyweight title with a one-sided points win over Duke Mckenzie in June 1989 at Wembley. He defended the title five times (an Irish record) before losing on a scandalous decision to Colombia's Rodolfo Blanco in Spain in 1992, after which he retired.
In the same year, he was awarded an MBE.
But McAuley wants in the Hall of Fame. He wants the headlines McGuigan and Mullan have received over the past few weeks. He wants it all.
Sad day.

You would have to say though, that McCauley's achievements are every bit as impressive as McGuigan's.

McAuley, the pint sized chief from Antrim was indeed a top draw performer. His first war with Bassa still ranks as one of the best fights I have seen. His ko of Jake Matlala looked excellent in retrospect.

HE lacked the charisma, and cross divide following of McGuigan however - I know who my favourite Irish fighter of that era is, no question Bazza takes it.

McAuley seems bitter , and whilst BJ might have done alright by him, its seems incencitive to mention him when Barry & Mullen are being inducted.

My memory must be playing up, always thought the judging was fair the night McAuley lost the title.

I thought MacCauley was lucky to get the decision in his first fight with Branco - he was down in the second and once or twice in the 3rd (or the other way round). He fought back well, but I thought it was pretty close.

McAuley is floored twice in 2nd and once in 3rd and 11th rounds, Blanco is down himself in the 9th round

scoring looks iffy..... mccauley down in three seperate rounds which would normally mean a maximum score of 114 plus he was down twice in on of the rounds... yet some judge gave him 117 pts

yeah thanks, was a nice surprise. just got lucky sometimes i guess
