Good old fashioned Alphabet bashing

Because I'm very sad and lead a very dull life, today I decided to start a chart thingy which will, in the absense of a solitary global sanctioning body, tell you which sanctioning bodies are better than other, using a ranking system.

What I'm after good, kind, knowledgable people, is some suggestions as to what to rank them on. For example, I thought of number of champions (eg. WBO with 17 champs out of 17 divs beats the IBU's 1/17.)

Another idea was to rank them on the basis of their all their champ's average rankings (eg. for WBO get rankings, say 4, 6, 3, 3, 1...then divide by 17) For this I need some independant rankings. Boxrec is an obvious one, but how far down into oblivion does ringside go?

Also, does anyone know of any obscure sanctioning body websites I've missed? I've got WBC, WBA, WBO, WBU, WBF, WBE, WBL, WUBA, IBF, IBO, IBC, IBA, IBU, GBF, GBO, GBA, GBC, NBA.

Grateful for any suggestions, or a bullet in the head. Ta.

Had a look at the NBA website, its not to bad actually. Their rankings isn't scadalous at all. If #1 fights #2 for the vacant title, then maybe we could have Martinez vs Verno Phillips at Light Middle.

Hate to annoy everone and drag this up, but anyone either on drugs or very bored may find this interesting. It basically sums up the state of sanctioning bodies today...

Found from the darkest depths a page of Universal Boxing Council rankins, updated october 2004 http://members.tripod.com/ubc_ratings/

Their reigning supercruiserweight champion is Leroy Gordon, who fought for the coveted UBC crown in his first fight. His 2nd, and last fight, was over two years ago, but he's still the champ. http://www.boxrec.com/boxer_display.php?boxer_id=078848

You've got to laugh.

Take it the UBC is still fine tuning its mandatory defence by-law? :o

In my view the WBA loose a number of points for the whole awarding of super titles thing that has to be one of the worst descisions of any sanctioning body and a clear money grab I would probably rate the notoriousely corrupt WBC above them.

Don't the WBC have just the same thing? They have the champion emeritus or whatever, don't they?

All african title springs to mind as well

All the alphabet bodies are a disgrace, there's no doubt about that. Although to be fair, without them boxing would lose a lot of the structure it currently has

Until upcoming young fighters get to the top and start earning big dollars and have the drawing power to pick and choose their opponents, they at least see the belts as a means to an end

I had to laugh at that UBC page.

As far as I'm aware, it still exists - just about - in South America. Probably the best way to describe it is S. America's version of the WBU, in that it's a "world" title seemingly limited to one specific area of the world, and anybody outside of that area either doesn't know about it, doesn't care, or sees it as a joke title.

Worst alphabet body for me has to be the WAA. How they can claim Butterbean to be the world's best heavyweight is beyond me.

That's another amazing story I discovered recently.

I think the website is waaboxing.com or something, but anyway, they've just started the WAA back up...and...it says somewhere in their constitution or whatever that if someone is WAA champ for a year or something, they get a mandatory crack at the IBU title! Woo! "To keep them ambitious and not rest on their laurels" was the official line I think.

Brilliant :D

Now, if only we can persuade every other sanctioning body to write in something along the lines of "At every committee meeting, there will be suicide pills, and they will be mandatory. Th-"

Sorry to drag this whole thing up again, but I felt I just had to let you know that the IBA has become an estate agents.
