For those older boxing fans on Boxrec it has come to note that former heavyweight boxer Al Malcolm has passed away aged 62.

Again for those who are of an older age may remember Al being the first opponent to fight Lennox Lewis.

Al boxed out of Birmingham.

RIP Al Malcolm. I was there when he fought Lewis. Seems so long ago now.

Had some KO wins on the continent, Ko'd the British Olympian Bobby Wells too. Also won and defended the Midlands Area title.
However as the man in the opposite corner he was nearly always the opponent and his record reflected that, but had some big names on his record like Lewis, Mason and Chianese.

I was there when Lewis thumbed him out of their brief encounter on a beautiful June evening in 1989 at the Albert Hall. It doesn't seem that long ago.

I was there too when he stepped in with the highly touted Lennox Lewis.

Have gloves will travel. And he had a good left hook on him if I remember rightly

I swear Malcolm had Lewis dazed in the first round -- he tags him and Lennie, briefly, looks frozen!

Al threw a nice right uppercut but I don't remember anything about his fight with Lewis apart from the very last punch when Lennox pokes a jab out and catches Malcolm in the eye with his thumb. Maybe Larry Holmes had given him some advice. I had previously watched Al win the Midlands Area heavyweight title at Dudley against the tough but limited Ian Priest of Alfreton, whom he stopped late on. He worked well with the uppercut in that one and already had a big fight lined up with Liverpool's comebacking Noel Quarless, whose dad was at ringside to watch the Priest fight. If Al had beaten Quarless he would have probably earned himself a British title eliminator but Quarless outscored him over 10 desperately close rounds in Hartlepool. That was a decent effort from the Brummie but Quarless proved negative in yet another disappointing effort from the big man. The Quarless defeat snapped a decent run for Al, with wins over Priest and the German Thomas Classen and a draw with Matchroom southpaw Jess Harding.

A classic example of a damaged fighter.

Stumbling gait, thick glasses. Had to get up close to who he was speaking to in order to hear them. Very sad.

At the age he was then he should have been in the prime of life...

Horrible. Al had linked up with manager and promoter Mike Barrett by the time he fought Lewis and that spelt disaster for him because Barrett, after he left the infamous Cartel in 1987 (Duff, Lawless and Astaire remained, sharing everything) saw all his fighters beaten, one by one. Barrett was jinxed and eventually threw in the towel and sodded off to Cyprus. Al wasn't so lucky.
