Fury plans home fight in December - BBC Boxing

Tyson Fury says he has "moved on" from facing Deontay Wilder for a third time in December and will instead be "coming home" to fight.

Fury, 32, won the WBC world heavyweight title from Wilder in February following a draw between the pair in 2018.

Their third bout was slated for July and later aimed at October before plans emerged for a December fight in the US.

"I agreed to 19 December," Fury said. "Then they tried to change the date again into next year."

Fury told The Athletic: "I've been training. I'm ready. When they tried moving off 19 December and pushing to next year, enough was enough. I've moved on."

The British heavyweight has since tweeted he was "coming home" and pointed to December for his next fight. He has not competed in the UK since August 2018 with his last four bouts taking place in the US.

Reports in the US suggest the date by which a third fight had to be agreed has now lapsed but that Wilder still hopes to find an agreement.

Fury has recently moved trainer SugarHill Steward into his Morecambe home to oversee training and those close to him have picked out 5 December as a potential date for his next fight.

Over the weekend, Fury's promoter in the US - Bob Arum - said he would "accommodate" his fighter's desire to compete in December.

Should Fury secure a 5 December bout it will arrive a week before the date on which Anthony Joshua is expected to defend his IBF, WBA and WBO world heavyweight titles against Bulgaria's Kubrat Pulev.

Arum has already stated that a highly-anticipated bout between Fury and Joshua now rests on them both scoring victories if their respective bouts are confirmed before Christmas.

Arum believes the pair could share a ring in the Spring of 2021 in a bout which would be the first in history where all four major heavyweight titles are on the line.

"I am the best fighter in the world," Fury added. "And before the end of 2021, I will be the only man on this earth with a heavyweight championship belt."

Any bouts for Fury or Joshua in December, as well as the prospect of a fight between the two Britons early next year, will likely come up against the added challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic.

Major fights have so far been staged behind closed doors and the absence of fans has the potential to reduce the amount fighters can earn.

Back in September 2020, so yeh, last month, SugarHill returned to the UK to train Tyson Fury for the first time since coronavirus lockdown. So he's been in camp already and Fury was already training prior to September as well.

Is it really safe to say the Wilder trilogy is off for now? With the contracts, was there a time limit? Can we blame covid for any delays? Will the WBC get involved.

Well if Fury is willing and able then I can't see why Wilder can't be. I suspect Wilder realises it might serve him well to rebuild his reputation and probably his confidence by opting out...returning to face Fury/Joshua after a win or two as the "new" Wilder. A second (immediate) loss to Fury wouldn't leave him with many options and his stock plummeting further.
Hopefully the December date for Fury will be a proper defence against a decent opponent - not so many Tom Schwarz-types in the WBC's ratings.

Hearn is in a bit of trouble here.

He was originally planning Billy Joe on November 28th and then Josh Warrington on December 5th.

Almost certainly won’t go with the 28th now for Billy Joe given they’re got the Joyce/Dubois fight on BT and if the talk that Fury and Yarde will be on December 5th then he won’t want to go then either - doesn’t leave many other dates given AJ is the week after.

Will be interesting to see who Fury fights. Surely they can’t do him vs Lucas Browne on PPV?! Would be good to see him against Hunter but there aren’t many others in the top 15 then are decent and available.

Will this be on the 40th anniversary show at the Albert Hall ?

That’s what they’re intimating - same show as Yarde.

I think offering it to Pov or Whyte, should win either well , a big fight and it will stitch Hearn up.

Otherwise we are looking at Hunter.

well given that all the top fighters are busy in NOV / DEC this year , its going to be a less dangerous opponent for sure .

Arreola if they are looking for an American name who can sell a fight.

While a low key fight might happen, with Fury being champ he has to defend his title, and why not make it a big show if not against one of the top fighters.

Hunter would be good. He’s a free agent so should be easy to make and a decent ranking.

A non puncher ranked about 50 maybe

Simon Kean the Canadian is big and muscled and has won a few WBC international titles for a low key defence.

Ajagba has just signed for Top Rank, also low key but a more difficult, better fight.

I was thinking Rivas (slightly known to UK fans) or more likely Hunter.

He could really do with another tall opponent as better prep for AJ or even wilder. Perhaps Hrgovic gets the call (joke).

Vitali is Emetrius champion still (saw one twitter) - he could effectively announce his comeback and great straight shot at Fury. That would be funny.

“That is what will happen. We haven’t finalised who it will be or anything yet, but that is what will happen.

“As far as he is concerned, that contract [with Wilder] is at an end. It can’t go on forever.

“Everybody has worked hard to get the Wilder fight on, but it’s just not happening.

“It’s not that they [Wilder’s team] have been difficult. We all understand what needs to happen.

“And I’ve said before on this programme, Tyson’s fight back in February with Wilder was the highest grossing heavyweight fight ever in Las Vegas, in terms of gate. So that’s nigh on a $20million gate; where do we get that from with no crowds? It leaves a massive hole.

“So we are basically looking for a territory or a country to come up with what we call in the business a ‘site fee’ to pay that. But unfortunately, because of the virus and various other problems, it has just not happened so we have got to move on.

“Maybe next year or some time down the road we will do it, but our immediate job is to get Tyson sorted out for December.

“He has worked hard and has been training constantly, so that’s what will happen. And, what I’m hoping for next year, is we can go straight to the fight with AJ. That’s the fight that everybody in boxing wants to see.”

Fury’s return could well come a week before Joshua’s, with Warren looking to add him to the Anthony Yarde-Lyndon Arthur card at the Albert Hall.

Should both men triumph as expected, all attention will turn to setting up one of the biggest all-British fights of all-time.

“I would love to do that fight [Fury vs AJ] in the UK,” he concluded. “You know, maybe we have got to get some help to get it together to get it on.

“The government has funded things like the Olympics before and the Commonwealth Games and so forth, what a great present that would be.

“It would be the biggest sporting event since God knows how long, certainly I think since the World Cup.

“Two Brits, fighting for four world titles in London or somewhere in the UK – that would be the most brilliant present for fans and everyone coming out of this crisis.

“There is no stumbling block at all. They have to come through their fights but after that, there aren’t any.

“Finally everybody is on the same page about both fighters splitting revenue 50-50.”

Another BT Sport Box Office..

Depending on how long BT fleece it's football fans.. But yeh, they're showing Fury vs. Schwarz/Wallin in the UK at 4am and it's on BT Sport PPV.. So ofcourse, prime time UK, this will be PPV.

Ortiz fights a tomato can in early November. Theoretically he can accept a fight one month after, if his upcoming mismatch appears to be easy enough.

Usyk-Chisora is on the last day of October. If it appears to be an easy work for Usyk, he will be in the same position as Ortiz.

Anyway, these options are interesting, but not realistic.

Povetkin-Whyte winner is even less realistic, as their fight is in late November.

The likes of Hunter, Rivas, Browne taking on sounds real. Although Browne will be a too mismatched opponent for Fury.

Anyway, hopefully Fury just fights this keep-busy bout, while Joshua defends against Pulev, then Fury-Joshua gets made in the early 2021.

I thought the Schwarz and Wallin fights were BT PPV despite being 4am.

Tbh gentlemen while Joyce and Dubois will fight for a couple of hundred grand each (as even that will be their career high payday.)

Tyson Fury sure as hell isnt now. Thus with no crowd it will be PPV. If anyone wants to try and draw a balance sheet with no crowd on how to pay Fury 1.5 million or so and Browne 300-400k then by all means let’s see it.
