Former amatuer Welsh and Four Nations Super-Heavyweigh Champion Darren Morgan is making is professional debut on this Friday Enzo Maccarinelli undercard.

Has anyone here seen Morgan fight? Is he one worth keeping an eye on?

I can't say I have and I have an interest in the Welsh amateur boxing scene, I read the article on BBN and was really taken a back. In Wales the heavyweight devision has really all been about Kevin Evans and Scott Gammar, nobody has come close to these two guys (or thats what I believe). Evans and Gammar's (in his amateur days) weight used to fluctuate so them meeting in a Welsh final was rare (although it did happen at least once, and Evans won pretty comfortably). However, apart from when they fought each other, both would win the final of the WABA's very comfortably. So what was Morgan doing when they were about I don't know.

out of interest, who was the last welshman to hold the british title?

I'm going to be keeping an eye on Morgan. Didn't he beat the more touted Joe Young in the Fournations?


Last welshman to hold the British heavyweight title? Dave Phillips, i think. Had problems with his brain though.

Evans fought in the 2002 Commonwealths at Super Heavy. As I said, he and Gammar used to fluctuate. So where was Morgan and both were around. One would be at Heavy, the other would be at Super Heavy and it would fluctuate

Darren Morgan gave Kevin Evans a real tussle in the 2003 WABA Super-Heavy semis. Evans nicked it by a couple of points from what I remember. Gammer had already turned pro by then.

The previous year, Morgan got well beat in the Heavy semis by Lee Milsjen who went on to the Commonwealth Games. This was the same Champs that Evans beat Gammer in the Super-Heavy final.

Gammer's weight didn't fluctuate in the amateurs. He just got bigger and bigger and bigger, after winning the L.Heavy title in the mid 90's. I thought he was turning into a bit of a blimp for a while.

Thats true, what I meant was that he competed in the WABA's and Heavy and Super Heavy. Not fluctuation as such as you say he got bigger and bigger.

Wales, I'm from the West - Pembrokeshire. Incidently there was an Amateur show in Narbeth today (might have been Yesterday) would have loved to have seen how the Narbeth lads are getting on.

Well, Darren Morgan won in the first last night against a game but limited opponent. He looked big and strong but showed at this time little else. He looked like he was trying too hard which is understandable as it was his first pro fight and may well have been nervous.

I can't recall him throwing a single jab and he rushed his work far too much and so crowded his own work. He also looked like he could easily drop 20lbs.

However it is of course very early days and these are all things that can be worked upon and improved upon over the next few years.

On the plus side he seems big and strong, with some power and he seems like he likes to get stuck in and have a tear-up, which is always good to watch.

Indeed, so lets hope he stays very active, as he has not got time on his side. Hey, Matt Skelton has not done too bad (so far), so maybe Morgan can follow a simular career plan.

Yes, plenty of power on show from Morgan. Looks an exciting addition to the heavyweights.

As said above, he rushed his work terribly but seemed to be aware of this judging by his post fight interview.
