I'm reserving a couple of dvds in my next order for a few John Conteh fights, has anyone seen a lot of them & which 3 or 4 would you recommend as his best performances??
cheers.

Conteh was a mean bastard and whatever fights you get, you're guaranteed plenty of subtle head butts (Conteh was the best headbutter since Gene Fullmer) and not so subtle blood spilt.
Sadly, post his fight with Willie Taylor in 1975 (in which he broke his right hand), Conteh was essentially one-handed and I would recommend you get the two-fisted Conteh: the title wins over Jorge Ahumada and Lonnie Bennett in particular.
The first fight with Saad Muhammad is also worth getting. It was Conteh's last great performance.

Any stories about them?
What did your dad think of them?

He thought John was really tough.
I've only met one of his brothers though.

I met John Conteh at a show recently. I was with a guy called Butch who had spent a long time with Conteh during his career, and he said Conteh didn't at all remember him and didn't seem to have much recollection of the periods he was talking about. Seemed that Conteh's memory wasn't so good, but he otherwise looked pretty healthy, wasn't too much overweight and looked pretty cheerful.

One of his Brothers owns Hannah's so I wouldn't be suprised if he was there.
