Gamboa was a terrific fighter back in the day. Very exciting to watch. Unfortunately after one year of layoff he was matched vs a younger and bigger fighter in T.C and he lost. I'd have liked to see in 2010 a fight between Gamboa and Juan Manuel Lopez.

It must be hard to grow up in a communist country and leave behind your family and friends and out yourself in danger to get to the states.

Then you immediately have money for probably the first time and more freedom...

He didnt quite live up to his potential but i wint judge him. He has lived well

Damn i remembering that times when both Gamboa and Lopez was undefeated and their matchup was something fans wanted. Cannot believe it was 10 years ago Gamboa is most entertaining cuban fighter ive ever watched. If he can pull upsed today it would be so cool. But lets be real, he is SHOT AF.

Yup. He took the hard road and probably didn't have the right people around him to guide him properly in his career. If Gamboa had the right promoter and the right team around him he'd have been a PPV fighter. His style of fighting was 'fireworks'.

Gamboa vs Juanma Lopez was a mouthwatering fight for the boxing fans that sadly didn't happen. Now Gamboa is just a 'stepping-stone name' for the young lions.

Gamboa's combos was joy for the eyes! Salido was so hard to KTFO. He was tough as they come.

These fights should've been in Gamboa's resume.

He’s on Fight Night Champion. Something to be said for that lol.

So 'the next Floyd' Haney could not T/KO an old washed up- short fighter in Gamboa. I guess Gamboa is somehow 'exposing' fighters like Tank and Haney.

Prime Gamboa at 130 lbs was the real deal.

I loved his style. Super entertaining and technical at the same time, if risky. Much more fun to watch compared to say, Rigondeaux. Crawford fight has definitely changed the course of his career forever. Should have never gone above feather. It was painful to watch him vs Haney - looked like a toddler trying to fight a teenager. 7’ reach difference

Yup. Gamboa could've had a better boxing career. It's a pity that he could not get Juanma Lopez in 2010 @ 126 lbs and maybe Broner in 2011/2012 @ 130 lbs.

Gamboa was his own worst enemy. He blew his fortune in a Rolls, a Bentley and a lot of gold trinkets. When his career was hot he turned down 1.2 million for Brandon Rios and spent 3 or 4 four years almost inactive in which he made little money from fighting. He opened up a gym and closed it, opened up a barbershop and that went bad also because barber shops make money when the owner is at the cash register and he was not. He had talent and charisma but was his own worst enemy.

Absolutely. He was a joy to watch at his best. I thought he was excellent and was surprised at how his career stalled so badly.

When he first came on the scene as a pro i remember thinking he would end up a top 3 p4p type and possible atg. Never got anywhere close. That fight with lopez would have been huge if arum didn't marinate it for ever.

Wow! I didn't know this stuff. Indeed money goes fast if you don't secure them in a smart way.

Wasn't Rios too big in size for Gamboa?! Maybe this was the main reason.

Gamboa was indeed a pure action fighter with insane combos, speed and work rate.

He had a solid career. Not close to great at all, but a decent one. And it's time for it to be over.

Yup Gamboa could've been a legit p4p fighter. At that time Gamboa vs Juanma was a very desired match but unfortunately that marination went wrong.

I now understand why FMJ chose to break up from TR and be his own boss and have his own way. Very smart move.

What kind of barber shop you gone to? That definitely isn't common in urban areas.

I think he should have changed career direction at a certain point, he did but took the wrong turn.
He got nicked and was being matched in all kinds of weird fights,
When he was coming up he was very good and had all kinds of things to offer short and long term.
Pisses me off seeing wasted talent who could have done better, he is one of them.

100%! Especially considering how entertaining to watch his style was - it shouldn't be difficult to help him achieve a superstar status with sensible matchmaking.

Rappers are rappers, there are high profile ones that were a little green in the boxing sphere at the time.
