Demetrius Andrade to face Liam Williams in February in U.S

Demetrius Andrade will be defending his WBO middleweight title against mandatory Liam Williams in February 2021 in Providence, Rhode Island. Andrade, 32, will be fighting in his backyard in Providence, but it’s unclear whether fans will be present.

Andrade’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing told SiriusXMBoxing that Andrade (29-0, 18 KOs) will be defending his WBO 160-lb strap against #2 WBO Williams (23-2-1, 18 KOs).

Before defending his WBO strap against the hard-hitting 28-year-old Williams, Andrade will be fighting a 10-rounder against the capable Dusty Hernandez-Harrison (34-0-1, 20 KOs) on November 27th.

When Williams was in a position to line himself up for a crack at the WBO title in 2017, he was twice beaten by Liam Smith. Those defeats showed the limitations that Williams has. He’s a good fighter, but when steps up, he’s exposed.

Since losing twice to Smith, Williams has seven consecutive fights, albeit against domestic level opposition. He hasn’t fought a world-class opponent since his defeat to Liam Smith.

In Williams’ last seven fights, he’s beaten these guys:

Andrew Robinson – KO 1
Alantez Fox – TKO 5
Karim Achour – TKO 2
Joe Mullender KO 2
Mark Heffron – TKO 10
Craig Nicholson – KO 2

Williams will have a hard time against the 2008 U.S Olympian Andrade, who has boxing skills, speed, and power that will give him fits. Being a big puncher won’t be enough for Williams. For him to have a chance against a talented fighter like Andrade, he needs experience, which has very little of.

Liam Williams badly lacking in experience

It’s too bad Williams’ promoters have been matching him so poorly all these years. If Williams had been matched against talented opposition from day one, he might not have lost to Liam Smith in 2017, and he’d have a better chance against Andrade.

It’s all well and good that Williams has a seven-fight winning streak, but that’s not going to help him when he gets in there with Andrade. Those seven fodder-level opponents that Williams has beaten have done nothing to prepare him for Demetrius.

Liam has improved a great deal. His level of improvement is regarded as similar to John Ryder’s form going into the fight with Callum Smith. I wouldn’t write him off; just as we all shouldn’t have laughed off Ryder. Hope he can make a dent in Andrade.

Williams' development under Dom Ingle has been very impressive. I really hope Williams wins.

This is what Matchroom want to happen but they haven’t even started negotiating the fight, let alone agreeing it, and Andrade still has an interim fight to come through.

Whilst Liam Williams isn’t a big name in the U.K. I still don’t think FW will want his man fighting on Hearn’s show so will be interesting to see what happens.

For me it’s a good 50/50 fight.

This is what Matchroom want to happen but they haven’t even started negotiating the fight, let alone agreeing it, and Andrade still has an interim fight to come through.

Whilst Liam Williams isn’t a big name in the U.K. I still don’t think FW will want his man fighting on Hearn’s show so will be interesting to see what happens.

For me it’s a good 50/50 fight.

Where did you lift this rubbish from?

Looks like this is even more likely to be taking place now that Andrade is off the card this weekend. I know Andrade mentioned BJS but after he fights Murray in December he will not be ready to go again in February. Should be a good test for Andrade and if he passes it then would be good to see him in the ring with the likes of BJS, Charlo or Murata.

Yeh, easier to fight someone who actually wants to fight you.

The one time he stepped up against Liam Smith I was very disappointed with Williams. He was boxing well in the first fight but he was still taking jabs from Smith and his power didn't seem to trouble Smith much. He got the cut from the headclash and it looked to me like he wanted out of the fight. Terrible body language in the corner. It was a big mistake from Lockett to just pull him out and not make a big deal of the headclash because they might have gone to the cards and he'd have won. Smith was coming on though. In the second fight it was more nip and tuck and Smith was having a lot of success with the jab. If Liam Smith giving you life and death fights, I don't see how you will operate successfully at world level. I also didn't like his demeanor before the second fight. Smith was giving it large calling him a sh*tbag to his face and Williams was just sitting there taking it. Andrade is a loudmouth and will be giving it large face to face.

Smith is underrated. Lockett is no longer there. I thought Williams should have won both. He looks a lot better at Ingles so should be interesting.

I think we will actually get to see how good Andrade's chin is in this fight. Williams can punch as we have seen in his last few fights, whilst Andrade's last few opponents have not been big punchers at all. I think Williams only way to win this is engulf Andrade and really pressure him, if he tries to box Andrade he will lose via a lopsided UD.

Williams boxed really well in the first fight until he was jobbed with a blatant headbutt from Smith. In the second fight Williams just didn't commit himself, almost accepting he wasn't good enough.

Andrade will defuse Williams' aggression and most likely win on points. Andrade is a nightmare with that awkward style.

Andrade by decision is the obvious result, but Williams is in great form and hitting hard. I'd love to see Williams corner Andrade around the 11th and - a mile behind on points - catch up with him for a dramatic stoppage.
Boo-Boo is one of those incredible talents that strangely end up making fights look boring.
I want his reign to end.

Demetrius Andrade-Liam Williams Probable For February In Providence, Says Hearn

Demetrius Andrade’s first fight since January 30 had been scheduled for Friday night in Hollywood, Florida.

The unbeaten WBO middleweight champion’s layoff was prolonged once his optional opponent, Dusty Hernandez-Harrison, contracted COVID-19 and withdrew from their scheduled 12-round fight on the Daniel Jacobs-Gabe Rosado undercard. Eddie Hearn, Andrade’s promoter, now anticipates Andrade (29-0, 18 KOs) will return to the ring in February to make his mandated championship defense against England’s Liam Williams.

Hearn expects an Andrade-Williams fight to headline a card DAZN would stream from an undetermined venue in Andrade’s hometown of Providence, Rhode Island.

“So, he was due to fight Dusty Harrison,” Hearn explained during a virtual conference call Tuesday to promote the Jacobs-Rosado card. “He got COVID. We looked at some replacements for Demetrius. And to be honest, he just said, ‘Look, I just wanna be in big fights now and great fights.’ So, you know, he’s looking for that standout fight. He wants the Billy Joe Saunders fight. And I think if Billy Joe Saunders doesn’t get Canelo Alvarez in May, it will be Andrade against Saunders, probably up at 168.

“But he also has a mandatory [defense] against Liam Williams. So, that’s who he will fight next, Liam Williams, subject to Andrade landing a major fight. And that will be in February, hopefully with crowds back in Providence.”

Williams (23-2-1, 18 KOs) knocked out Andrew Robinson (24-5-1, 7 KOs) in the first round of his most recent fight, October 10 in Stratford, England. The 28-year-old Williams, the WBO’s number two-ranked challenger for Andrade’s 160-pound championship, has won seven consecutive bouts by knockout or technical knockout since losing a 12-round majority decision to countryman Liam Smith (29-2-1, 16 KOs) in November 2017 in Newcastle, England.

In Andrade’s most recent bout, the skillful southpaw stopped Irish underdog Luke Keeler (17-3-1, 5 KOs) in the ninth round January 30 in Miami.

England’s Saunders (29-0, 14 KOs) is set to make the second defense of his WBO super middleweight title December 4. He’ll encounter another Brit, Martin Murray (39-5-1, 17 KOs), in a 12-round main event DAZN will stream from Wembley Arena in London.

Saunders was supposed to make a mandatory defense of the WBO middleweight crown against Andrade in October 2018 at TD Garden in Boston.

The Massachusetts State Athletic Commission denied Saunders’ request for a boxing license prior to that bout once he tested positive for a banned substance. The WBO later stripped Saunders of that championship.

Andrade instead out-pointed Namibia’s Walter Kautondokwa (18-2, 17 KOs) by unanimous decision in their 12-rounder to win the then-vacant WBO middleweight title. The 2008 U.S. Olympian has since defended that title three times.

Warren will likely take this to purse bids, get Eddie nervous and make him bid more than he should. Wouldn’t surprise me if it’s a total purse over $2m

Williams is with MTK so they will probably act as the middle man between Eddie and Frank before it goes to purse bids. From Williams twitter he just wants to fight Andrade now, so if they are going to get the fight arranged for February the deal will probably be done over the next few weeks.
