Classic moments revisted.

I have just purchased some old videos on Ebay and I had a quick view of them today, just thought I would post some views on these fights after not viewing them for a while.
Tyson vs Douglas - What a performance for old Buster, I remembered the fight as a carbon copy of Holyfield vs Tyson 1, but it wasn't. James did a much more emphatic job. Never remember how fast this guy was, beating Tyson to the punch time and time again. Tyson was clearly not "right" but stil, completely forgotton how good James was at stepping back and countering with those fast combinations.
However, my original view of the end of the 8th round has also changed. I always thought Douglas was perfectly composed when he was floored. However he wasn't it was a delayed reaction fall and Douglas was up on 9.5 and could have been waved off (Got up at a very similar time as Tyson did vs Williams). He was not with it and the bell probably saved him. The fact that the count was famously long - DOES make this a tad controversial. I never thought it was untill now.
Terrible commentary from Darke and Harte, Douglas let off slightly in the 3rd and they were talking like it was over for him. He clearly won every round (apart from the eighth handily).
The Best of Roberto Duran - Great video, I've got alot of the "Best of" series and I like it, don't normally like highlight video's - but these are done well. The Duran vs Barkley fight always is amongst my thoughts when I view threads entitled "most sensational result" or "best comeback" award. Duran was an old 37 (possibly more) and was way out of his weight devision and not given an hope. He started off terribly but came through in the end (the great Gill Clancy said he needed every round from the 8th to win the fight) - He got all except one of them and scored a KD. Tremendous fight, fantastic performance.
His performance vs Hagler also doesn't recieve that much acclaim these days, he came within a whisker of beating the great man at his peak. Whilst I have scored this fight a little wider to Hagler than the judges did, there was no more than 3 points in it. Had Duran won a couple of rounds and got the victory, would there be much debate as to who is the greatest ever fighter.
Also got Ali vs Foreman, I had this before in two different version, but I believe this one is rare and contains the entire original PPV footage not always shown - So I'm glad I bought that one.

Well I thought £6.00 for the three including posting wasn't to bad, these were the original bought videos.
Certainly would consider buying some tapes you no longer want though Steve, Something I like doing. Or if you to do "swapsies" on original recordings.
Bought another set of three (for £6.00) and a set of 27 for £23.50 - although awaiting them to arrive, starting to get a little concerned about the 27.

Funn Stu, I watched all the same fights you mentioned again about 2 months ago, and came to exactly the same conclusions.
Great performance from Douglas, amazing to recover the round after the knockdown like he did, but had the referee tolled the count correctly, or had the knockdown come eve 10 seconds earlier, NO WAY would he have seen that next round. It took every ounce of strength for him to get off the canvas, and in truth, he should have been counted out, as he was still half on the floor at 9. That was one hell of an uppercut Tyson produced, totally against the run of play.
Duran's performance against Barkley for me is in some ways the best of his career, he put on a masterclass of standing in the pocket with a bigger guy without getting tagged, and towards the end of the fight he was really giving it to Barkley. I also though Duran looked in excellent shape considering his age, it was his last great performance.

I have a box full of tapes I am willing to sell off individually or as a job lot. Got a shitload in there, just no room for them.
Mostly stuff from 95-2000 originals from Sky or US TV.
Anyone interested drop me a PM and I'll fill you in.
Got some great ones in there.

Yeah, I think it would have been stopped today (Tyson vs Douglas). As you said Douglas was only rising on the ten, not fully upright - MOST refs would have waved it off (like Tyson vs Williams). Although I hated the ref for stopping the count, I was so glad when he waved Tyson of in Memphis (because I won big). I do believe it is something that needs to be addressed when is a fighter classed as "up". Tyson got stopped, Douglas was allowed to continue when is similar positions on the 10.
Some would argue that Duran's final great performance came against Pazienza in the first bout, no way. Vinny was dominating but Reberto clocked him a few times, not an especially great performance. I actually do rate the Barkley fight as Duran's greatest performance outside of Lightweight, although he was brutal vs Moore in one of the worst displays by any referee.

Speaking of Ebay that is one thing that annoys me is the some of the sellers clearly lie. As I have said here in the past I have 3/4 of the Boxers video's and would love to buy the collection (even it does sadly mean buying ones I have already got).
The thing is people are advertising on Ebay "Complete collection" and then saying 60 video's and magazine. Well I know that is not all the collection, others say 72 is the complete collection, others say 74. I have even heard 76. Does anyone hear got the complete collection? How many video's / mags was there (including those special editions). How many "special editions was there".
I have done a google search and there doesn't seem to be a site that actually says how many were produced.

by the same token, Foreman was actually up by 10, it was 9 and a bit when he was up with his gloves still on the canvas, however, it was a moot point, because he was completely fucked.
I think in world title bouts, the count should be taken out of the refs hands, the ref should start the count, and then a recording should be played with a proper 10 count. However, this would mean some arrangements with arena soundsytems, but surely would be possible in big casino venues.
i think the ref may have figured that Tyson had taken a hell of a lot more punishment. he was being pummelled all the way through the fight, dropped douglas, who was fresh as a daisy until that point, and then got pummelled some more, i think the ref chose to exercise his decision to call the bout off.
However, i think Tyson got a raw deal that night, it should have been a one punch turnaround for tyson.
Wonder how much different things might have been had he got by douglas, would Vander have beaten him in their very next fight, not so sure. As it turned out, Tyson was eroded enough for Vander to just ride the storm and take him apart, I've often thought that the Vander who wanted Tyson first time around, may just have regretted it...will never know.

I have the
full set of The Boxers videos and the magazines that came with them.
They are No's 1 to 72 plus three bonus videos which are
Solid Gold (Patterson V ingo, Frazier V Ellis, Foreman V Lyle)
The Fab Four (Duran, Hagler, Leonard, Hearns)
The Ultimate Prize (Ali V Spinks 1 & 2)

I understand that at the time people were expecting Hagler V Duran to be a real war. This of course was not the case. To my mind this was due to a number of reasons. Firstly although they were both agressive and intimidating fighters they were both also counterpunching fighters. So when you get two highly skilled counterpunchers together it doesn't always make for a good fight. Also I always felt Hagler showed the smaller Duran too much respect and should have forced the pace more than he did. I have also heard some people say that in that fight Hagler was subconciously concerned about his own stamina over 15 rounds against a fighter like Duran, it's a point worth considering, but I am not convinced.

I think I have that tape, is it in a yellow and red case? With lots of tribal dancing before the fight?

Eubank was
very lucky not to get thrown out that night. Eubank later claim that Sherry was making racist comments to him during the clinches.

I thought is was Dan Sherry also but then the name rang a bell as a horrible HW opponent to one of your guys (Dan Murphy maybe?)
If there were racist comments being made then more power to Eubank. Can't blame him for retaliating :x
Dangerous Dan Murphy lost to Lennox in 6 rounds (going from memory) seem to recall he was a bit of a spoiler.

Does anyone remember what happend to Sherry directly after that fight. There was shouts of "Oscar, Oscar" because saying he milked what looked like an nothing head butt was an understatement.
However, even after the fight was called off he was still "out of it", was he acting or was he geniunally that f'd.
I personally thought Eubank was lucky to get the decision given the he was docked two points.
