Heavyweight Champions. Old Time Rematches that never happened.

By old time, I mean before my time, and I saw Louis. Next fight: I think we all know what would have happened if Corbett rematches Sullivan, or Johnson rematches Burns, or Dempsey rematches Willard, or Baer rematches Carnera. But what about... Fitzsimmons rematches Corbett? Burns rematches Hart? Carnera rematches Sharkey? Braddock rematches Baer? I think in nearly all of these cases, the title has a good chance of going back to the former Champion. I respect the people on this board, the thought that goes into most posts, and would love to see your thoughts on these hypothetical rematches. Thanks!

Jack Johnson would have probably outpointed Sam Langford for the title again or perhaps they'd drawn but I just dont see Sammy beating Jack. Also Tommy Burns would always beat Marvin Hart.

Nice thoughts! Fitz/Corbett rematch is something I've wondered about before given Corbett's dominance up to the solar plexus punch.

How about if Ali rematched Big George?

Corbett could've probably won that rematch with Fitz.

George's confidence seemed shattered after Ali, and he needed to basically step away from the sport, and reevaluate everything about his life before he could find his fighting spirit again.

So assuming Ali vs Foreman fought again in '75 or 76. I'd have to favor Ali again. Though George may well have had a good shot if he'd gotten the post-Thrilla Ali.

I agree with you on Burns and Hart. Both aggressive, and Burns was a notch above Hart. I think the others I mentioned (excluding the ones I dismissed off hand) may have flipped back to the former champions. It still seems puzzling that Hart got the nod over Johnson in 20 rounds. Hart had the style to give Johnson problems, but then so did Burns (and we all know how that went). Johnson was too good for either of those guys, in my opinion.

What about Jess Willard vs Jack Dempsey 2?

Just kidding. You'd have to really hate poor Jess to do that to him again.

Hmnn thats news to me! Racist or however it might have been the decision, Hart has newer respect from me today!

For what it's worth, Hart-Johnson was considered a robbery by many at the time.

Corbett-Fitzsimmons might have ended up different in a rematch; hard to say.

Sharkey likely would have beat Carnera in a rematch.
Hard to imagine Carnera beating Baer unless Baer put in a listless performance.
Baer may have won a rematch with Braddock; Baer was actually pretty good in rematches.

No listless. Too often, Baer didn't put out the effort that he was capable of.

After enjoying everyone's opinions, it's time I gave mine... Corbet decisions Fitzsimmons, or gets a late stoppage. Burns decisions Hart again, but a closer fight the second time. Sharkey decisions Carnera and takes back the title. Baer stops Braddock late in the rematch but not until Braddock gives him a lot of trouble again. This is fun. Thanks again for all of the responses!

Jack Johnson-Marvin Hart.
Peter Jackson-James Corbett.
